World Mental Health Day Thursday 10th October

To mark World Mental Health Day, the SU, in conjunction with the Counselling Service, the Chaplaincy and Health Promotion Unit will be presenting a series of 10 minute presentations before lectures on the topic of ‘Empowerment’.

8k Fun Run This Sat 12th October for Jigsaw

An 8k Fun Run for NUI Galway Alumni, students and friends will be held on the grounds of NUI Galway at 10am, Saturday 12thOctober. You can sign up now in the SU office and pick up a sponsorship card. Participation in the 8K fun run section of the event costs €20. The official charity partner for this event is Jigsaw Galway.

Challenge Ageism and Prevent Elder Abuse – Free Workshop

Age Action Ireland, in association with Cosc (The National Office for the prevention of Domestic, Sexual and Gender Based Violence), are holding an interactive intergenerational workshop in Galway that aims to raise awareness of ageism and elder abuse and what you can do to help prevent it. Galway: 24th October 2013 – People’s Resource Centre, Saint Clare’s Walk, Merchants Road, Galway City, 11am – 3pm

This is a free workshop with lunch provided. Registration is essential.

Class Reps Training Thurs 10th October

Class Reps Training will take place on Thursday 10th October 6pm-9pm (Venue to be confirmed).

Every class is entitled to a Class Representative to represent their class. If your class does not have a Class Rep your voice will not be heard. If you have any questions on the roles and responsibilities of a Class Rep contact the SU Vice-President/Education Officer Catherine Breslin at

Suas Overseas Volunteering Information Session 14th Oct 7pm

The Suas Volunteer Programme has been running since 2002, with third level students travelling to India and East Africa for 10 weeks during the Summer to act as Teaching Assistants in local schools and Education Centers. Connacht Heineken Cup Match This Friday

We now have tickets on sale in the SU Office for Connacht Rugby vs Saracens for just €15. This Heineken Cup match takes place on Friday 11th October at 8pm in the Sportsground. Please note that you can only get the €15 NUIG Student tickets from the SU office – they won’t be on sale at the gatefor this price.

The EXPLORE innovation initiative is currently seeking applications from students, but applications close on Friday 11 October. If you have an innovative idea which involves teaming up with a member of NUI Galway staff, we may be able to award you funding of €1,000 as well as providing support to put your idea into action. EXPLORE has already funded dozens of projects involving over 200 staff and students since its launch in 2012. NUI Galway Working and Travelling Abroad Fair

The Fair will take place between 12pm and 3pm on Wednesday 30th of October in the Bailey Allen Hall. This free event brings together J1 Visa Companies, travel companies, volunteering/adventure companies, travel insurance, internship and training companies to help you plan your summer.

Student Travelcards – Available Now

The shiny new travelcards are now available from the Students’ Union office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday. All you need to do is bring yourself, your new college ID, €15 and a smile for the photo we will take of you. These are valid until the 31st of December 2014.

Lockers – 421 Lockers still available!

Please note that lockers are now available. You need to register online first at and your locker will be reserved for a 3 day period during which you can call up to the SU to collect your key and pay for same.

Please note that keys for lockers in Áras Moyola and the Engineering Building can only be collected at the SU Engineering Desk in the Engineering Building foyer Monday – Friday 11am-3pm.
