Extended Weekend Opening Hours in Library Start This Weekend

After long negotiations we’ve secured extended weekend opening hours of James Hardiman Library, NUI Galway during the Christmas exams. If there is good uptake for this trial period then the extended weekend hours will remain for the summer exams too – so use it or lose it!

The extended opening hours will be Saturday 08.30-21.00 (normally 08.30-17.30) and Sunday 10.00-21.00 (normally 10.00-17.30) for the following weekends:

  • Sat 25th/Sun 26th Nov;
  • Sat 2nd/Sun 3rd Dec;
  • Sat 9th/Sun 10th Dec.

Are you well? Keeping well around exam time
Exams can be the most stressful time of the year; and a lot of peoples’ routines tend to change dramatically. Here’s some tips to help you keep yourself well during exam season.

  1. Don’t isolate yourself
    Exam time can be very lonely as people go off studying on their own. Try to make a conscious effort to meet up with friends, or plan something nice at the end of a day of study with others. Socialising with others is crucial around this time. Cutting yourself off from the world is not a good idea.
  2. Don’t be a hero
    Surviving on 2 hours sleep and 7 cans of red bull is not the way the human body was meant to function. Schedule in some sanity breaks and exercise during your day – a 30 minute walk can work wonders.
  3. Eat regularly
    You don’t have to eat like a nutritionist, but eating three meals a day and getting in some healthy snacks will keep you on track. Food fuels your body, so if you’re constantly eating junk you won’t feel great.
  4. Sleep regularly
    Many people completely change their sleep patterns during exam time. If you can, try to fit in 7-8 hours’ sleep and follow a routine. It will help you when exams start.
  5. Stay hydrated
    Water is your friend!
  6. Talk to friends and look out for each other
    You might notice some friends or classmates struggling at this time. Maybe they need to be pointed in the direction of one of the support services listed below.
  7. Ask for help if you need it
    • NUIG Health Unit: Walk in service Mon-Fri 9.15am- 12.30am & 2.30pm- 4.30pm
    • NUIG Counselling Service: Drop in Mon-Fri 2pm-4pm, counselling@nuigalway.ie

Reading Room
It has come to our attention that some students are leaving their belongings including jackets, books and notes at desks in the reading room overnight and not returning to their desk until late morning or in some cases late evening. Students who are not at their desk for longer than 30 minutes between the hours of 06:00 until 09:00 can have their belongings set aside by other students and some staff who will be occasionally monitoring the area.
The onus is on you if you leave your belongings unattended as this is a 24hour facility and can be accessed by any student at any time.
Also for the cleaners to be able to carry out their role and maintain the upkeep of the room could all students have their belongings removed from their desk when they enter for their half an hour from 05:45 – 06:15.

The 24 Hour Reading Room runs until Friday 13 December.
