SU Council Meeting Monday

The final SU Council meeting of this year takes place at 6pm this Monday 25th of November in HBB G019 in the Human Biology Building opposite Sult. All are welcome to attend. For more info contact su.education@nuigalway.ie

Registration Open for NStEP Training

NStEP (the National Student Engagement Programme) training sessions have been booked and will take place 2pm-5pm Weds 27th Nov. You can reserve your place HERE.  These sessions are open to all students however only 30 people can attend an individual session. The training will focus on the following areas – The Student Learning Experience, Gathering Student Opinion, Effective Feedback, Developing Solutions, Making Change Happen, Closing the Loop. Can You Bake?

We are looking for NUI Galway’s finest bakers to bake up some treats for us to sell at the SU Charity Cake Sale and Pet Farm Visit on Weds 4th Dec. The event will be raising funds for the SU Charities: AIDS West and Domestic Violence Response. To volunteer email studentsunion@nuigalway.ie – even if you can’t bake we also need helpers to sell cakes, raffle tickets and charity socks on the day!

Pet Farm Visit

As part of our Wind Down Week of events we will have our Charity Cake Sale & Pet Farm Visit 12pm – 3pm Weds 4th Dec at Áras na Mac Léinn. There will be llamas, goats, lambs, rabbits, sheep, chickens, ducks, guinea pigs, chicks, cake, tea, a raffle and tunes from Flirt FM. Our friends at NUIG Animal Ambassadors will also have their Soothing Snakes, Silly Spiders, Lovely Lizards, Mysterious Mantids and Super Snails!

Free Mindfulness Practice

Practise self-care and self-compassion this week! We now have two free shared mindfulness practice sessions in NUI Galway each week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.
Tuesday morning Mindfulness with Dr Eva Flynn:  8.15am to 8.45am in the Clinical Science Institute, Room 2012 (Up to and including 10th Dec)

Wednesday lunchtime Mindfulness with Dr Phil Noone: 1.15pm to 1.35pm in Seminar Room 5, 2nd Floor, Áras Moyola (Up to and including 10th Dec)
All our shared practice sessions are free and suitable for people with no previous knowledge of mindfulness as well as those who have been practising for many years. Staff, students and members of the community are welcome!

 

Coldvember Continues

Coldvember is a fundraising event for the month of November aiming to raise money to bridge the gap in funding for Mental Health Services for students at NUI Galway. Each day during November you are invited to join them for a swim at Blackrock. More info and the donation page are available here.

 

Outreach project ‘Let’s Talk Cancer’

‘Let’s Talk Cancer’ aims to dispel the numerous myths surrounding the risk factors associated with cancer, where facts can often be misinterpreted and research studies sensationalised. This is achieved through short, snappy, animated videos! The newest video focuses on ketogenic diets and cancer treatment: Watch it here.

Mental Health Survey

NUIG second year Commerce students are currently collaborating with SCCUL sanctuary in order to raise awareness around mental health.  It would be of great benefit to them if you could take 60 seconds to carry out their short survey here.

FREE Introduction to Meditation class 2pm-3pm this Sat 23rd Nov at OLBC Hall, 11 Ely Place, Sea Road. This event is free of charge and open to everybody.

 

New Loyalty Scheme for Students Making Postgraduate Applications

Final year undergraduate students at NUI Galway can make a FREE postgraduate application (to NUI Galway) up until Tues 31st Dec (saving of €35). Eligible students have been emailed details of this scheme by Postgraduate Admissions (including how to access your personalised discount code). Submissions Open for First Cut! Youth Film Festival

Calling young filmmakers, aged between 12-24 years! Do you have a short film you want to see on the big screen? Then First Cut! wants to hear from you!
Whether you are an individual filmmaker or part of a school, college or youth group, visit firstcutfilmfestival.com to find out how to submit your film free of charge. Every type of film is welcome, including fiction, documentary, animation and music video. The festival runs Weds 11th – Sat 14th March 2020. The deadline for entries is Tues 21st Jan.

#FundTheFuture Walk Out 1pm Thurs 21st March

At 1pm next Thurs 21st of March 2019 we are asking all NUI Galway students and staff to leave their lectures in a walk out to demand that the Government #FundTheFuture

Here’s why:

  • We reject the idea of a loan scheme to fund higher education and condemn the current €3,000 contribution fee.
  • We believe Education is a public good and should be funded as such.

Nominations for these positions open 10am today Thurs 14th of March (nomination forms available from the SU and SU Website). Nominations close 5pm Thurs 21st of March (nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office). The Election will take place on Thurs 28th March.

 

SU Council Chair Elections

Nominations are now open for the position of SU Council Chair. Nominations close at 5pm on Tuesday 19th of March. Nomination forms are available from the SU Office/Website. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election. The Election will take place at 6pm on Monday 25th of March in the O’Flaherty Theatre.

 

Vodafone Freebies Today!

Vodafone will be in Áras na Mac Léinn today promoting their Vodafone X offer from 11am-4pm. They will be giving all switching customers free wireless Plantronics headphones when they switch!

Spotting Toxic Relationships Talk

Join us for a talk and Q&A on “Spotting Toxic Relationships and the Psychology behind Them” at 6.30pm on Wednesday 20th of March. Light refreshments provided on the night! The talk will be given by Christie Tetreault, a PhD candidate at the NUIG School of Psychology and member of the Risky and Extreme Behaviour Research Group.

 

Semester 2 Exam Timetable

The Semester 2 Exam Timetable will be available online from 12noon TODAY Thursday 14th of March. Semester 2 exams will begin on Monday 8th April (5MB3 Students Only) and Tuesday 23rd April (All Students). All exams will end on Friday 10th of May. If your timetable is incorrect or you do not have a timetable, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions online before visiting the Student Information Desk in Áras Uí­ Chathail (Ground Floor).

Marchathon Week 2 Competitions

  1. Team Photo Competition: St. Patrick’s Day Themed Team Photo Competition the most creative, innovative and hilarious photos will win Smarter Travel Goodie Packs for the team. All photos must be submitted by 1pm Fri 15th March at this link.
  2. Go the Distance Competition – Machu Picchu Inca Trail: This week we’re challenging your team to complete the Machu Picchu Inca Trail (45km), by achieving a weekly team average of 60,000 steps. Each team that achieves an average of 60,000 steps and above will be entered into a draw for a Smarter Travel Goodie Pack and €10 Me2You Gift Card for each member of the team!

Finish your application with input of at least 12 hours of volunteering and at least 4 reflective questions on your volunteering experience and be awarded with President’s Award/ALIVE Certificate for your volunteering and Civic Engagement.

Are You Registered to Vote?

The deadline to register to vote or to change your address to make sure you can vote on 24th of May in the Local Elections, European Elections and Blasphemy Referendum is Tuesday 7th of May. You can pick up the paperwork to register to vote or to change your address details in the Students’ Union Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm.

 

NUIG 5k Early Bird Registration is Open

The NUI Galway 5k run in aid of Jigsaw Galway takes place at 7pm on Tuesday 2nd of April. This is a spectacular Run, Jog or Walk around the University Campus along the banks of the river Corrib. Early bird registration rate is €10 for students and €15 for staff/public until the 26th of March and includes a free t-shirt! Register here.

Friday’s for Future Galway 1pm Tomorrow

Secondary school students from all over Galway will skip school this Friday to take part in a school strike for the environment and they have invited NUI Galway students to join them. The students will gather in Eyre Square at 1pm this Friday 15th March to protest for the Irish Government to take immediate action on climate change.

 

CUSP Sustainability Summer Internships Applications Close Tuesday 19th March

The Community and University Sustainability Project Team (CUSP) is seeking to offer Sustainability Leadership Awards to up to 4 NUI Galway Students to advance the roll-out of the NUI Galway Sustainability Strategy 2017-2020.   The Awards are being offered in 4 project  theme areas namely Energy; Water; Nature & Ecosystems; and Communications & Engagement. The awards are open to NUI Galway Students and successful applicants will be awarded an 8 week scholarship (June-August 2018) funded by the NUI Galway Students’ Union through the Student Project Fund.  Log onto our CUSP website to find out more information.

 

Chronic Pain Research Study

Researchers at the Centre for Pain Research in NUI Galway would like to invite people with chronic pain and at least one other chronic condition to take part in a research study where they will get the opportunity to use a new online psychological programme. UPDATE: Regarding Exam Results and Fee Deadline

We have been made aware that many students are still waiting on their provisional semester 1 exam results and that this is causing a lot of concern as the deadline for the payment of the remainder of fees is today Thursday 31st of January. We have been working with the various departments in the University this week to try to get provisional exam results issued ASAP as we know this might impact on students decision to continue their course.

We have been advised that the Fees Office do not hold Semester 1 exam results for students with outstanding fees.

Students are advised to check Blackboard for information about provisional result release dates in the first instance or contact your College/School Office.

SU Free Cloakroom Open TODAY

The SU Free Cloakroom is open 9am-6pm Thursdays and Fridays during term. It’s located near the SU XL Shop.

Remember you can now purchase and top up your Student Leap Cards in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. You can top up your Leap Card with us for monetary amounts or put your weekly/monthly bus ticket on it.

To get your Leap Card:

  2. Bring your code to the SU Office and we will issue your card for €10. Please note the code is only valid for 7 days.

Volunteers URGENTLY Needed

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our annual charity collection day in Galway City this Saturday 2nd of February for the following time slots: 1pm-3pm or 3pm-5pm. You will be holding a collection bucket and asking the public to donate what they can to the SU Nominated Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and COPE Galway. The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place 12pm-3pm Wednesday, 6th February in the Bailey Allen Hall. Free safeTALK Course

Online Registration Open for free safeTALK Course 9.30am-1pm Weds 27th Feb in Westside Resource Centre. safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares attendees, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Action Panels are where young people meet and decide new content ideas for SpunOut.ie. This ensures that the information on www.spunout.ie is based on what young people aged 16-25 across the country want to know about. Action Panels are based in Dublin, Waterford, Cork and Galway and they each meet three times a year. As an Action panel member there are a number of training opportunities such as on how to be an effective advocate for causes you care about, as well as receiving personal and professional guidance.

Road Safety Authority Interactive Shuttle + Roll-Over Simulator 11am-3pm TODAY Áras na Mac Léinn

#NUIGSU18 Elections Nominations Open TODAY!

Nominations for the 3 full-time paid officer positions of President, Vice-President/Education Officer and Vice-President/Welfare and Equality Officer will open at 10am TODAY Thursday 22nd of February 2018. Nominations close at 5pm on Wednesday 28th of February at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office. The Election will take place 10am-8pm on Thursday the 8th of March 2018.

The part-time officer positions of – Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality Officer, Societies’ Chairperson, Postgraduate Officer, Clubs’ Captain, 5 College Convenors and Mature Students’ Officer – will all be elected on Thursday 12th of April 2018. Nominations for these positions will open at 10am on Thursday the 21st of March 2018 and will close at 5pm on Wednesday 28th of March.

The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm in on Monday 5th of March 2018. Nominations for this position are now open and will close at 5pm on Monday 26th of February. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.

SU Council Chair Nominations are Open #NUIGSU18

Nomination forms are available from the SU Office and the SU Website. Nominations close at 5pm on Monday 26th of February at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office.

The Election will take place at the SU Council Meeting on Monday 5th of March at 6pm in AM250 Arts Millennium Building.

PLEASE NOTE: only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.

The Marchathon 10,000 Step Challenge is happening from Monday 26th February to Friday 23rd March. Students and staff from colleges throughout the country will get out walking in this fun event to win prizes, get fitter and use their feet as a sustainable form of transport. NUIG’s Cancer Society is holding their 4th annual Relay for Life 6pm-6am on Thursday 15th March. There will be various events on the night such as the survivors lap, competitions to win amazing prizes, themed laps, movie screenings, candle of hope ceremony, plenty of food, a variety of different performances and all while raising vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society. Galway Sports Partnership FREE Activity Leader Award Course this Friday & Saturday

Normally this course is €45 per person but NUI Galway students can attend for FREE. The course is targeted a people who are looking at delivering activities (sporting/games) to groups and it would suit anyone aiming to help out at summer camps, youth groups etc. The course takes place this Friday 6:30pm – 9:30pm and Saturday 9am – 4pm in the Connacht hotel. We are currently conducting an online survey of the levels of obesity stigma within the student population at NUI Galway. The results will be used to test the effectiveness of various interventions to address obesity stigma.

To celebrate the Chinese New Year of Dog, NUI Galway China Society will hold a Lantern Festival Party in the Hub from 1pm on Sunday 4th of March.
