The NUI Galway Working and Travelling Abroad Fair 2019 will help you to plan the best summer ever!

The Fair will take place 12pm-3pm on Wednesday 23rd January 2019 in Áras na Mac Léinn. 

Exhibitors include: J1 Visa companies, travel companies, volunteering/adventure companies, internships/training companies and there will be delicious food stalls to fill your belly as you plan your summer! There will also be information talks during the day in The View upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn.

Extended Weekend Opening Hours in Library for Christmas Exams

After long negotiations we’ve secured extended weekend opening hours of James Hardiman Library, NUI Galway during the Christmas exams.

If there is good uptake for this trial period then the extended weekend hours will remain for the summer exams too – so use it or lose it!

The extended opening hours will be Saturday 08.30-21.00 (normally 08.30-17.30) and Sunday 10.00-21.00 (normally 10.00-17.30) for the following weekends:

  • Sat 25th/Sun 26th Nov;
  • Sat 2nd/Sun 3rd Dec;
  • Sat 9th/Sun 10th Dec.



Postgrad Karaoke returns to Sult from 9pm this Friday 27th of October. As usual there’ll be lots of great SU Card offers and surprises for all!


National Student Radio Conference Student Tickets €10

Interested in a radio career and all things media? The 3rd National Student Radio Conference is a two-day event in NUI Galway Friday 3rd and Saturday 4th November for media students, community radio volunteers or anyone who would like to find out more about radio broadcasting. Speakers include Lynn Simpson, John Walsh, Brian Greene, Fergal D’arcy, Louise Clarke and Denzil Lacey. There’ll also be social and networking events over the two days.

6pm-7pm TONIGHT Thursday 26th October in Dangan. This is your chance to try out various events such as 100m, 800m, shot putt and long jump. There will be prizes for first male and female in each event.

Galway Vigil in Memory of Savita Halappanavar this Saturday

This Saturday 28th of October will mark the 5 year anniversary of the death of Savita Halappanavar. Galway Pro-Choice will be holding a candlelit vigil at 6.30pm this Saturday 28th October on Church Yard Street (Galway Market) to mark the passing of a brave, intelligent and beautiful woman, whose life was an inspiration for so many people, and whose tragic death humbled our nation. Members of the public are welcome to attend and pay their respects.

NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day 12pm-3pm Tues 7th Nov 

The event takes place in the Bailey Allen Hall with short presentations taking place during the day also, covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research. There will be over 60 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services

The aim of this project is to design and develop laparoscopic box trainers (DIY box trainers) on a budget to improve the technical skills of medical students with an interest in surgery as a career.

Manual Handling Training

  • Manual Handling Training Course – COURSE FULL 25/08/15

Course Aim:

To provide you with the information and training necessary to be competent in Manual Handling, in order to avoid injury to yourself and to others. The Course Provider is The Emergency Services Training Institute.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Define Manual Handling.

State relevant Irish and EU Legislation.

Describe the basic Anatomy of the Spine.

Utilise correctly the 8 Principles of Safe Lifting.

Course Programme:

Manual Handling Legislation – as it applies to the employer 
and employee.

Dangers and harm caused by careless / unskilled methods of manual handling.

Principles of levers and laws of motion.

Anatomy of the spine and muscular system.

How to handle loads safely.

Practice in safe handling of loads.

Assessment & Certification:

To receive certification for Manual Handling all participants must successfully complete a theory quiz and a practical lifting assessment. The certification is valid for 2 years from the date of training.

Course Attendance: Maximum of 10 participants per instructor.

Cost: €30 (Usual cost €50)

Course objectives: To cover the basic fundamentals of drinks and drink service methods, including the social responsibility on all parties to serve drink in a responsible manner.

2: Introduction to Wines

3: Spirits appreciation and theory

4: Stouts, beers and Ciders (theory and service)

Assessment/Certification: There is no assessment. A certificate of participation will be given.

SU Enterprise Awards 2014 €23,000 Prize Fund – Closing date 5pm TOMORROW FRIDAY 17TH JANUARY

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards aim to unlock the potential of the students of NUI Galway to invest in their own futures today. 
If you have an idea for a new business or a social enterprise then this can be the competition that can allow you to realise your goal. Students are invited to sketch out the initial proposals for their project or business and to draw up the plans they hope will make their idea a reality. The finalists will be given the chance to take their ideas forward and to set about implementing their projects with the assistance of a financial allowance, workshops and clinics.
The overall winner will receive a direct investment of €10,000 in their project to really help get it off the ground in addition to further guidance and mentoring to help bring the project forward, while two runners up prizes, each valued at €5,000 will also be awarded. The six final projects going through to the second stage of the competition will each receive a €500 bursary.

NUIG Jailbreak 2014

There will be an information talk on NUIG Jailbreak tonight (Thursday 16th January) at 7pm in the O’Flaherty Theatre. The first NUIG Jailbreak takes place on 22nd & 23rd of February – you have 36 hours to get as far away from Galway as possible..with no money! All funds raised go to charity. More information here.

SU Charity Aquathon – Sign up and get training Now!

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 25th of February 2014. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan. 

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €25 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. You can sign up in the Students’ Union office and the Sports Centre now and collect your Sponsorship Card. Entry includes free t-shirt and food for all participants. We also have a 5 week training plan which starts on Monday 20th of January to get you ready on our website here.

Election of a Postgraduate Student to Údarás na hOllscoile
Under the Universities Act, 1997, one postgraduate student is to be elected by the postgraduate students as a member of Údarás na hOllscoile (The University Governing Authority). The period of office of the person elected shall be February 1, 2014 – January 31, 2015 (provided that (s)he continues to be a postgraduate student for the duration of that period) Nominations must be received in writing by the Returning Officer (Gearóid Ó Conluain, Room A131, Quadrangle) by 12.00 noon on Friday, January 24, 2014.
Election Procedure: The election will be conducted by ballot, if necessary, of the postgraduate students on Tuesday, January 28, 2014 in the Concourse from 10.00 to 21.00. More Information.

EXPLORE Lunchtime Workshop – Tuesday 21 January

A lunchtime workshop will take place for all staff/students who are participating in EXPLORE projects this year. It will take place from 12-2pm in The View, Áras na Mac Léinn on Tuesday 21 January. The meeting will focus on your project’s progress and sharing your experience so far.  We will host three short, practical workshops as part of this event. We would expect at least one staff and one student from each project in attendance. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. Cooking and Eating on a Student Budget, with Galway Chefs Rob and Mona Wise .The event will be held Wednesday 29 January at 7.30 pm at Ros Geal Residence, 19 University Rd (next to Tesco Express).

Focus Group – What’s On app

What’s On is an EXPLORE project looking to create a free app for NUI Galway students detailing activities outside of academic life on campus as well as deals available around town. We are hoping to host a focus group in the boardroom of the Students’ Union, Áras na Mac Léinn (beside the College Bar) on Thursday 23 January. Please drop by to let us know what you want from this app and get some free tea/coffee and refreshments.  Students can come along anytime from 1pm-5pm to give their opinion. This app is aimed to help students to make the most of college.

In this new health series for TV3 a team of leading medical experts will closely monitor a household’s lifestyle and carry out comprehensive health screening tests, providing them with an accurate assessment of their disease risk factors. The Doctor in the House team will connect the dots between people’s daily behaviours and the impact on their health. We all know that fatty foods or too much caffeine is bad for us, but why? We know that we shouldn’t spend too much time in front of the computer or the TV, but why- what effect is it having on us?A personalised plan will be devised in a bid to encourage each member of the house to make real changes in their lifestyle to benefit their future health. The household will have eight weeks to work together to modify their behaviour before being retested.  It’s all about realisations and connections between everyday life- habits and behaviours- and how they directly relate to potential health problems-  big and small- but all vital to the quality of our life.
