Measles in NUI Galway

The Department of Public Health has been notified of two confirmed cases of measles in students at NUI Galway.Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications. The only way to prevent measles is by vaccination. Any student who has not had two doses of MMR vaccine should be vaccinated as soon as possible.

Handwashing helps stop the spread of infectious diseases. If you have a skin rash, high temperature, cough, runny nose or red or watery eyes please stay at home until 4 days after the onset of symptoms and you are well again. You should also contact your G.P. by phone if you are unwell. Unvaccinated housemates of cases of measles will need to stay at home for a number of days depending on when they were exposed. This is to avoid transmitting measles to others.

More information on measles is available here.

The workshop will take place on the 20-21st of June, 2014 in DERI, IDA Business Park, Lower Dangan, Galway City. We are currently recruiting volunteer coaches (of any gender) for Rails Girls Galway 2014. Please email railsgirlsgalway@gmail.com if interested more at https://railsgirls.com/galway.

Free Mind Mapping Workshop

To tackle the problem of exam disappointment and failure or even just to improve your study techniques, we are holding a Mind Mapping workshop by Dr Dermot Burns from the Department of English on the 26th of February in AC2016 from 6pm-8pm. Mind Mapping is a useful technique that helps you learn more effectively, improves the way that you record information, and supports and enhances creative problem solving.

By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject. You can see the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes. More than this, Mind Maps help you remember information, as they hold it in a format that your mind finds easy to recall and quick to review.

Rail Girls Galway Needs Volunteers

Rails Girls is a worldwide movement aimed at giving a first approach to Web application development. It prioritizes female participants to address the IT gender gap by creating a sense of community between females who usually can hardly find similar peers helping and inspiring them, in the male-dominated IT area. This is achieved by local 2-days workshops in which attendees implement a simple application using Ruby on Rails. After Rails Girls Galway 2013 run successfully (mainly sponsored by NUIG, it received more than 100 requests for participation) a second edition (dates to be defined) has been asked for, ever since. We are currently recruiting volunteer coaches (of any gender) for Rails Girls Galway 2014. Please email railsgirlsgalway@gmail.com if interested more at https://railsgirls.com/galway
