SU Weekly Email 31 21st of April 2016

Weekly Email

Welcome to your weekly email from your Students’ Union.

Here’s our top 10 tips for the exams next week

1. Check, double check and triple check your timetable NOW! Every year we have students who read their timetable wrong and end up missing an exam – don’t be that guy!
2. Find your College ID and bring it with you to every exam. If you have lost it call to NUIG – Student Information Desk to get a new one for €20. You will be fined €30 if you don’t have your ID with you.
3. Plan how you are getting to the exams NOW and set all your alarms. And your housemates alarms. You need to be there 20 minutes prior to the start of the examination so that’s: 09:10 for a 09:30 exam, 12:40 for a 13:00 exam and 16:10 for a 16:30 exam.
4. Leave your phone at home – it’s a €20 fine for bringing your phone to the exam AND other penalties can include mark reduction and getting zero marks for the module.
5. WASH! If you even have your shopping list written on your hand scrub it off. If you have any writing on your body, no matter how unrelated to the exam, you’ll fail the exam and have to repeat.
6. Follow the directions of the Exam Invigilators at all times.
7. If you need advice on deferring your exams please contact the SU Education Officer, Rebecca Melvin or your College Office.
8. You can’t bring in pencil cases, glasses cases or calculator covers to the exam.
9. You can’t leave the Exam Venue for the first hour or the last 30 mins of the exam
10. Relax – you got this!

Is your bike Winter ready?

This week is the last week that An Mheitheal Rothar (Galway’s Bike Workshop) will be running it’s public drop in workshops until the new year.

The last workshop of the year will tomorrow Friday 4th Dec 12pm-3pm.

We have a number of safety recommendations for the Winter weather:

1.) Make sure your brakes are working well! In wet weather it is more important than ever that your brake pads, cables and leavers are working perfectly;

2.) Be visible! We have a small number of free Hi-Viz vests and bag covers and have good quality front and rear lights available at low cost;

3.) Oil the appropriate parts of your bike to make them last longer and not seize up with rust over the winter – especially the chain, cables and brake arms;

4.) Make sure your tyres are in okay condition and are pumped up properly (if your tyres are bald/worn or they are not pumped enough it is much more difficult to stop when you need to and to control your bike).

SU Weekly Email 14 – 11th December 2014

Weekly Email

Welcome to your weekly email from your Students’ Union.

Following intense lobbying by the Students’ Union and the Student Health Unit there has been an update on the Exams Deferral protocol:
For the academic year 2014/15 a new policy on deferrals has been introduced, under the terms of which being granted a deferral in one examination automatically triggers a deferral of all subsequent examinations in that Examination session.
However, Staff of the College Office on behalf of the Dean may now grant exemptions from this policy, allowing the student to defer one or more exams without the requirement to defer all subsequent examinations in a single session. Supporting evidence will be required.
If you have any queries about this please contact the SU Education Officer, Phelim Kelly on su.education@nuigalway.ie

Petition to Address Gender Imbalance at NUI Galway

Dr Micheline Sheehy Skeffington recently won a gender discrimination case against NUI Galway at the Equality Tribunal. She will agree to join the task force ONLY if the University meets three conditions, which she also feels are essential for the award. Please sign this petition and demand that NUI Galway meet Micheline’s three conditions.
