SU Enterprise Awards 2014 €23,000 Prize Fund

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards aim to unlock the potential of the students of NUI Galway to invest in their own futures today. 
If you have an idea for a new business or a social enterprise then this can be the competition that can allow you to realise your goal. Students are invited to sketch out the initial proposals for their project or business and to draw up the plans they hope will make their idea a reality. The finalists will be given the chance to take their ideas forward and to set about implementing their projects with the assistance of a financial allowance, workshops and clinics.
The overall winner will receive a direct investment of €10,000 in their project to really help get it off the ground in addition to further guidance and mentoring to help bring the project forward, while two runners up prizes, each valued at €5,000 will also be awarded. The six final projects going through to the second stage of the competition will each receive a €500 bursary.

24 Hour Reading Room 25 Nov-13 Dec

The reading room will be open 24 hours a day from Monday 25th November to Friday 13th December. Remember you need to have your ID Card registered with the Security Office to gain access. Students who will be making use of the 24 hour reading room facility are reminded not to leave items unattended as items can and have be stolen.

 

Christmas Exam Buses Monday 2nd December – Monday 16th December 2013

NUI Galway Students’ Union in partnership with City Direct Bus has organised a Christmas Exam Bus service from NUI Galway to the Salthill Exam Venues of Leisureland and the Galway Bay Hotel. Buses will leave University Road bus stop 30 minutes before the exam starts and will provide a non-stop service to Leisureland. Return buses will leave from Leisureland 10 minutes after the exam finishes and drop students back to University Road. 

Cost: €2 per journey.

Exam De-Stress Programme

Exam De-stress Programme in the Wellness Centre in the Hub, Áras na Mac Léinn starts Monday, 25th Nov. and runs for 3 weeks, offering massage, acupuncture, craniosacral therapy, shiatsu, and more at subsidised prices.  See all the details here: here.

No Mobile Phones in Exams

Mobile phones will not be tolerated inside exam halls during exams. The best option is to leave it at home before you come in for your exam. If it is left with your belongings outside of the exam hall the University holds no responsibility for items stolen. Students found to have mobile phones in the exam will have them confiscated and be fined €20. More information on exam rules and regulations is available here.

Spin Bikes

Unfortunately Grand Scheme Bike Share Ltd who ran the Spin Bikes Scheme on Campus filed for liquidation on Friday. The bikes are off hire until the University finds a temporary arrangement or a permanent re-arrangement.

White Collar Fight Night TONIGHT

The NUI Galway Students’ Union White Collar Fight Night is back TONIGHT in the Bailey Allen Hall. The event is in aid of the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline. Doors 7pm, first fight 7.45pm. Tickets on sale in the SU office NOWor on the door: €12 for adults, €7.50 for students, under 18’s & OAPs. Children under 12 go free.

Christmas Day Thursday 21st November – Santa needs helpers!

NUI Galway Students’ Union Christmas Day comes early again this year. We are holding a massive Christmas Day fundraiser in the College Bar on Thursday 21st of November to raise money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline. There will be a traditional Christmas dinner, carols, cheesy Christmas tunes with DJ Byrno and lots of prizes for the best/worst Christmas jumpers along with a whole lot of other Festive merriment. Get your tinsel, mistletoe and jumper ready now! 

Santa also needs some helper volunteers to assist with the fundraising on the day so if you have an hour or two to spare between 11am and 6pm on Thursday 21st December email studentsunion@nuigalway.ieto sign up and you will definitely be on Santa’s nice list this year.

 

Postgrad-Aoke Returns this Friday

Our Postgrad Karaoke nights are back due to popular demand. The first Postgrad-Aoke night will be in the College Bar this Friday 15th November from 7.30pm with Giant Games, pizza deals and of course Karaoke! All performers will be rewarded for their efforts so get practising.

Sign Language Classes: Basic Course

Basic Sign Language Course

This basic introductory course in Sign Language runs over 10 weeks with a 1 hour class each week. The course equips students with enough sign language to introduce themselves and conduct a fairly basic conversation with another sign language user. Participants may expect to learn the manual alphabet and some vocabulary associated with everyday conversation. There is some emphasis on conversational practice. Students are expected to attend no less that 80% of the course.  We are now offering the Signature exam for unit 101. This has a credit value of 3 and costs an extra €40 which students can pay separately if and when they decide to take the exam at the end of the course.

Cost: €40 including handouts via email (usual price €75)

The newly elected officers will take up their positions on the 1st of July 2016

As per The Students’ Union Constitution all members of the Executive Committee shall be elected by and from the full members of the Union in accordance with Schedule 1. The procedure for all other elections shall be determined by the Elections Committee.Every year as a member of the Students Union you choose who you want to run your Union by electing the Executive Committee for the following year. The term of office for the elected Officers of the Union runs from the 1st of July until the 30th of June.

Why Vote?

Voting gives you a direct say in how your Union is run, how your issues are dealt with and how your money gets spent. It’s important to pick the people you want as it’s the Union who will be representing your views to the Universtiy and on a local,regional and national level. Your vote is your voice so speak up!

When do I vote?

The full-time officers – the President, the Vice-President/Education Officer and the Vice-President/Welfare Officer – will all be elected on Thursday the 3rd of March 2016. Nominations for these positions are now CLOSED. 

The part-time officer positions of – Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality Officer, Societies’ Chairperson, Postgraduate Officer, Clubs’ Captain, 5 College Convenors and Mature Students’ Officer – will all be elected on Thursday 10th March 2016. Nominations for these positions are now CLOSED. 

The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm on Monday 29th of February 2016 in IT250. Nominations are now CLOSED. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election. 

How to Vote?

  • Come along to the advertised Polling Stations in An Bialann (the Canteen) (10am-7pm), Áras na Mac Léinn (11am-8pm) and the Engineering Building (12pm-4pm)
  • Bring your NUI Galway Student Card
  • You will be given a ballot paper and pen
  • Fill out the ballot paper listing your candidates in order of preference…remember you don’t have to vote for more than 1 person
  • You must then fold your ballot paper to conceal your vote and place it in the sealed ballot box
  • You can only vote once!

For the elections of Clubs’ Captain and Societies’ Chairperson on polling day it is strictly one vote per club for Clubs’ Captain and one vote per society for Societies’ Chairperson. Only Club Captains and Society Auditors (or their proxy) may vote and they can only vote in the Bialann polling station or at the 1pm Clubs meeting or 6pm Societies meeting. There is no Remote Vote for these positions.

Remote Vote

Remote Vote is a facility to allow students to vote online. It’s particularly useful for students on satellite campuses and students on work placement, but it’s available to any student. The system is accessed via the Students’ Union website and is easy to use, secure and confidential. Students simply log in using their campus account. The only requirement is students must register to use Remote Vote before the Election Day.

Remote Vote deadlines 2016:

Full Time Elections & Referendum register before midnight Wednesday 2nd March & Vote online 10am-8pm Thursday 3rd March. 

Part Time Officer Elections & Referendum regsiter before midnight Wednesday 9th March & Vote online 10am-8pm Thursday 10th March. (Please note Remote Vote not available for Clubs & Socs Positions – Captains/Auditors should contact the SU about using proxy for their vote) 

You must register separately for each of the voting days. 

How do I run for Election?

To be eligible to run in this election, candidates must be members of NUI Galway Students’ Union. All registered students of NUI Galway, on payment of the student levy are members of the Students’ Union. You need to be nominated by 20 members of the Students’ Union i.e. registered students.

Nomination Forms

Nomination forms shall be made available from the Students’ Union office and the Students’ Union website once nominations have been opened. Completed nomination forms must be returned to the Students’ Union election nomination box in Áras na Mac Léinn by the appointed date and time. Late nominations will not be accepted under any circumstance.

Elections Committee

The Elections Committee comprises of the President, the Vice-Presidents and the Returning Officer appointed under Schedule I. The duties of this committee are to oversee the running of all Union elections and to decide on any matters relating to such which are not specifically covered in this constitution and its schedules. If a member of the committee is running for re-election, they must resign their position on the Elections Committee. The Executive Committee shall nominate one of their number as a replacement. The Elections Committee must also provide a list of rules and regulations for candidates before campaigning begins.
