Summer Holiday Arrangements 2014

The Students’ Union Office will remain open throughout the summer Monday-Friday 10am-12.30pm and 2pm-4.30pm until the 31st of August. (Closed Bank Holiday Monday 2nd June & Monday 4th August)

The Students’ Union Cloakroom, Caifé na Gaeilge, the Hub, the SU Engineering Desk and the College Bar Carvery will be closed until September. 

The Student Health Unit will be open to all students until Friday 30th May. From Monday 2nd June onwards they will only see Postgraduate students and their hours are reduced to 9.30am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm Monday-Friday. There will be reduced staff numbers during the summer.

The Students’ Union XL Shop will be open 8.30am-4pm Monday-Friday from the 19th of May and closed Saturday/Sunday. 

Smokey’s Café will be open 8.30am-6pm Monday-Friday from the 19th of May and closed Saturday/Sunday.

The Wall Café will be open as usual 8am-8pm Monday-Friday and 9am-5pm Saturday/Sunday.

The College Bar Coffee Dock will be open Monday-Friday 8.30am-3.30pm (Hot Beverages & Pastries) 3.30pm-6.30pm (Hot Beverages only) and closed Saturday/Sunday. 

The College Bar Deli Counter will be open Monday-Friday 11am-2.30pm with a daily hot meal option alonside sandwiches, salads etc. Closed Saturday/Sunday. 

The College Bar Pizza Counter will be open Monday-Thursday 12pm-2.30pm and Friday 12pm-9pm. Closed Saturday/Sunday. 

James Hardiman Library Opening Hours Monday 19th May – Sunday 31st August 2014: 

19th May – 20th July & 18th August – 31st August: Monday-Friday 08:30-17:30, Saturday/Sunday Closed. 

Library Closed June Bank Holiday Monday 2nd June

21st July – 17th August: Monday-Thursday 08:30-22:00 Friday 08:30-17:30 Saturday 10:00-17:00 Sunday Closed

Exam Results/Repeats

  1. Official results for Semester 1 and Semester 2 Undergraduate exams will be released between 10th and 20th June 2014. 
    Important: No official results will be released for Semester 1 exams for Undergraduates until June 2014. 
  2. Official results for all other Postgraduate courses considered at Summer Exam Boards (Semester 1 and Semester 2 exams) will be released on 27th June 2014.

$13.       Autumn exams are scheduled for Tuesday, 5th August to Friday, 15th August 2014 (inclusive).

Locker Clear Out Deadline Friday 16th May

We know you have become attached to them and they feel like a home away from home BUT all lockers need to be emptied by 5pm on Friday 16th of May. Items not removed will be disposed of. You can drop your key (just the key leave the lock on the locker please!) up to the Students’ Union office in Áras na Mac Léinn Monday – Friday 10am-5pm.  

Summer Holiday Arrangements

Please note that the SU Cloakroom and the SU Engineering Desk are closing tomorrow, Friday 9th of May for the summer holidays. They will reopen in September.

The Students’ Union office and outlets will remain open during the summer with reduced hours from the last week of May onwards. The Student Health Unit will still see Undergraduate students until Friday 30th of May. During the summer they will only see Postgraduate students Monday-Friday 9.30am-1pm and 2pm-4.30pm with limited staff numbers. Further summer holiday arrangements can be found on our website.

All past and present NUI Galway Students’ Union officers, staff, journalists, colleagues and friends are invited to join with us to celebrate as the Union turns 50.

The 10 Minute Cycle Challenge runs from the 7th – 27th May and we are looking for NUI Galway teams to participate!

Get together with friends and colleagues to form a team of 3-6 people and try to clock up as many trips on a bicycle as possible, each journey must be at least 10 minutes long to count.

To keep the Challenge competitive each team must have a ‘new cyclist’ (someone who hasn’t cycled in the past six months). If a team doesn’t have a new cyclist they can still take part but won’t be eligible for prizes.

Survey on Female College Students Breast Health Knowledge

My name is Mairead Moynagh and I am a Master’s in Health Promotion Student here in NUI Galway. I am looking for female participants to take part in my questionnaire for my thesis. The questionnaire is called “An investigation into female college students breast health knowledge, attitudes and determinants of screening practices.” It should take no longer than 7 minutes. The study will investigate female students in NUI Galway, attitudes, knowledge and what determines their choice of breast health screening. Survey Link.

The Galway African Film Festival 23rd-25th May FREE Event on Campus

Filmgoers will be able to see some of best of contemporary film from the African continent.  Come and see films like ‘Rags and Tatters’ which offers an intriguing perspective on the Egyptian Arab Spring and opportunity to see twilight alleyways of an Egypt rarely seen on film. The award winning ‘Mother of George’ which premiered at the 2013 Sundance Film Festival touches on attitude toward and silence around fertility issues.  Oscar nominated Chiwetel Ejiofor (Twelve Years a Slave) can be seen in the powerful Nigerian drama ‘Half of a Yellow Sun’ which tells a stories of Olanna and Kainene, glamorous twins and their complicated lives caught up in the events of the Nigerian civil war. Registrations are now open for the Galway and Tuam Darkness Into Light walks which take place at 4.15am on Saturday, May 10. All funds raised go to suicide prevention charity Pieta House, which opened its first West of Ireland facility in Tuam last December. There is a special student registration rate of €15 Register here.You can also sign up this weekend at their pop-up shop in the Eyre Square Centre.

Bank Holiday Monday Arrangements

The SU Office, Cloakroom, Engineering Desk, College Bar, SU Shop, Health Unit, Caifé na Gaeilge and the Hub will all be CLOSED on Monday 5th May for the Bank Holiday. The Library will be open as normal 8am-10pm but there won’t be any desk services. Smokeys Café will be open 9:00am-5:30pm and The Wall Café is open 9:00am-5:30pm.

Create a Computer Game in 12 Hours

INSIGHT Centre for Data Analytics at NUI Galway, is bringing the GameCraft 2014 to Galway for the first time after it has been running in Dublin for years and all over the world. Gamecraft is a game jam, which means you and yours have a ludicrously short amount of time (12 hours) to turn an idea into a computer game.

It’s on Saturday May 10th from 9am to 9pm, in our conference room. It’s a great way to meet new folk, have some fun and most importantly make more games!

NUI Galway Students’ Union Supports the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS)
NUI Galway Students’ Union has officially joined the international Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement, which calls for an academic, cultural and economic boycott of the state of Israel. The decision was taken by a referendum of NUI Galway students last month. The referendum, which was called by The Palestine Solidarity Society asked students whether or not they agreed with the motion: “That NUI Galway Students’ Union actively supports the campaign of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions against the State of Israel”. 65% of voters supported the motion. Try Sailing for Free this Sunday

Galway Bay Sailing Club situated at Renville, Oranmore, County Galway is hosting an OPEN DAY at the Club on  SUNDAY the 4th MAY between 12 noon and 5.00pm. 

The Open Day is part of the Irish Sailing Association initiative to give everybody the chance and opportunity to get out onto the water and, we at Galway Bay Sailing Club would like to welcome members of the public down to the club and to take this opportunity to get out on the water on dinghies, ribs and cruisers for FREE!  It promises to be a great day with lots of action for all ages from young children to teenagers adults and families.

Good News for September! 
1. The NUI Galway student ID card replacement fee will be reduced from €30 to €20 coming into effect in the next academic year 2014/15.
2. All repeat examination results will now be available on Friday the 5th of September 2014 before college commences on Monday the 8th of September. This means that all repeat students will be able to register for Blackboard etc., from the first day of term.
Well done to our SU Education Officer Catherine Breslin who has been working hard on these issues, on your behalf, with the Exams office this year.

Examination Advice for Students – Mobile Phones Not Permitted in the Exam Hall

Be aware of Examination Regulations and review them before your exams.

Mobile phones will be confiscated for the duration of the exam and a fine of €20 will apply in each case. A breach of exam regulations will apply. The possible penalties are as follows:

(a) Letter of reprimand
(b) 5% reduction of marks for the relevant module
(c) 10% reduction of marks for the relevant module
(d) Zero mark for the relevant module
(e) Zero mark for the relevant module with a cap on the mark for the repeat (if a repeat sitting is allowed by the Marks and Standards for the programme) of a pass mark for the relevant programme.

If you are entitled to vote but don’t appear on the register the closing date for inclusion on the Supplemental Register of Electors is the 6th of May. Winner of SU Enterprise Awards 2014

Huge congratulations to Brian Slattery NUI Galway Psychology PhD student from Dublin, who won the top prize of €10,000 at our Enterprise Awards on Saturday. His winning project Student Talksis an online knowledge platform for students to communicate their ideas, connect with other students and find out about courses and careers. The two runner-up prizes of €5,000 each were awarded to The NUI Galway Student Managed Investment Fund and Loyal-T Stamped. More information.

€420,000 in Funding Available to Galway Social Entrepreneurs

Social Entrepreneurs Ireland will be holding an information evening about their competition in the School of Business this Friday 4th April at 6pm. The closing date for entries to their 2014 Awards competition is 5pm on Monday, 28th April. ROPES Launch Party

The ROPES 2014 launch party will take place on the 10th of April at 4pm in the COPE charity shop, on St. Augustine’s Street (off Shop Street). The launch will be opened by award-winning novelist Niamh Boyce, as part of the Cúirt International Festival of Literature. Admission is free, all are welcome and there will be refreshments served, alongside readings from ROPES 2014.

Copies of the journal will be available at the launch for €10, with all proceeds going to COPE Galway.

Exam De-stress Programme starts Monday 7th April

You can book a de-stressing treatment, including massage, acupuncture, osteopathy, reflexology, hypnotherapy, shiatsu, and craniosacral therapy – 30 minute treatment is €10. Email destressbooking@nuigalway.ieto book. The Chaplaincy are offering a Pre-exam Retreat Evening in the Chapel, Monday 7th April, 6-8pm, and their famous ‘Breakfast-in-a-bag’ at pre-exam mass, each morning during exams. Or book a Soccer De-stress 5-aside game.  All details can be foundhere.

If you are entitled to vote but don’t appear on the register the closing date for inclusion on the Supplemental Register of Electors is the  6 May. The Postal and Special Supplement closing date is the 26 April. Application forms are available here.

 

Measles in NUI Galway

The Department of Public Health has been notified of two confirmed cases of measles in students at NUI Galway.Measles is highly contagious and can cause serious complications. The only way to prevent measles is by vaccination. Any student who has not had two doses of MMR vaccine should be vaccinated as soon as possible.

Handwashing helps stop the spread of infectious diseases.If you have a skin rash, high temperature, cough, runny nose or red or watery eyes please stay at home until 4 days after the onset of symptoms and you are well again. You should also contact your G.P. by phone if you are unwell. Unvaccinated housemates of cases of measles will need to stay at home for a number of days depending on when they were exposed. This is to avoid transmitting measles to others.

Mindfulness for Chronic Headache

Do you suffer with recurring headaches?  Would you like to learn mindfulness exercises to help manage headache pain?  Are you 18 years of age and over?  If you answered YES to all of these questions you are eligible to take part in a free, online mindfulness based stress reduction programme tailored for adults with chronic or recurring headache.  This is a six week, self-paced programme.  Participants have unlimited access to the mindfulness based exercises and information designed to support self-management of headache pain.

What you will have to do?  Participants will be required to take a brief survey (30 multiple choice questions) before starting and after completing the online programme.  For further information or to take part, go directly tothis link.

They want: clothes, shoes, books, accessories, jewellery, household items, DVDs and CDs. They can’t accept toys, electrical or nursery items. Gorta needs your help to fight world hunger.

Winner of SU Enterprise Awards 2014

Huge congratulations to Brian Slattery NUI Galway Psychology PhD student from Dublin, who won the top prize of €10,000 at our Enterprise Awards on Saturday. His winning project Student Talksis an online knowledge platform for students to communicate their ideas, connect with other students and find out about courses and careers. The two runner-up prizes of €5,000 each were awarded to The NUI Galway Student Managed Investment Fund and Loyal-T Stamped. More information.

Student Wins €10,000 with online student knowledge platform at NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards

Brian Slattery, an NUI Galway Psychology PhD student from Dublin, has scooped the top prize of €10,000 at the NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards. His winning project “Student Talks” is an online knowledge platform for students to communicate their ideas, connect with other students and find out about courses and careers.The creator of “Student Talks” was presented with his prize by local entrepreneurs Joanne Sweeney-Burke and Gill Carroll together with NUI Galway President, Dr James J. Browne and NUI Galway Students’ Union President, Sean Kearns.

The competition which is an initiative of NUI Galway Students’ Union is supported by NUI Galway and seeks to foster a spirit of entrepreneurship amongst students. In its four years, the competition has attracted entries from students studying a variety of subjects.

The two runner-up prizes of €5,000 were awarded to “The NUI Galway Student Managed Investment Fund” and “Loyal-T Stamped”. “The NUI Galway Student Managed Investment Fund” is a real-life financial portfolio operated under the guidance of industry experts and alumni for the benefit of the University and its students. NUI Galway students Martin Wietbrecht, Conor Hanniffy, Shane Reilly and Maurice Kelter are the team behind the Fund.

“Loyal-T Stamped” seeks to revolutionize the way we collect and redeem customer loyalty points through a visually striking user friendly application. NUI Galway students Nathan Regan, Fergal Walsh, Gearoid O’Connor and Robert Courtney developed this project.

Joanne Sweeney-Burke, who spoke at the awards ceremony said: “The drive, determination and enthusiasm of the students is fantastic. It is heartening to see that within NUI Galway the essence of the entrepreneurial spirit is alive and well. I would also like to congratulate the University and the Students’ Union for their vision in fostering the talents of tomorrow’s entrepreneurs.”

NUI Galway Students’ Union President, Sean Kearns said: “We have been overwhelmed by the number and standard of entries to the NUI Galway Student Enterprise Awards. The entrants are testament to the exceptional initiative and creativity of students in social and business enterprise. They show that students are both able and willing to create the big ideas that will help fuel our recovery. The Students’ Union is delighted to be in a position to facilitate some of these ideas as they take their first steps. I have no doubt but that we are working with the leaders of the future.”

**Autumn/Repeat Exam Timetable Out 14:30 Friday 11th July 2014**

If you are attending the repeat examinations in August 2014, or repeating any form of assessment / assignment / coursework, then you are liable to pay the repeat examination fee of €195.00.

  • The deadline for submission of appeals/rechecks is Friday 4th July. 
  • Autumn Exams are scheduled for Tuesday 5th- Friday 15th August (inclusive)

The Financial Aid Fund had now re-opened for students who are Postgraduate Students (12 months on Campus) and for Repeat Students who are sitting Autumn Exams. Examination Advice for Students – Mobile Phones Not Permitted in the Exam Hall
Be aware of Examination Regulations and review them before your exams.
Mobile phones will be confiscated for the duration of the exam and a fine of €20 will apply in each case. A breach of exam regulations will apply. The possible penalties are as follows: 
(a) Letter of reprimand 
(b) 5% reduction of marks for the relevant module 
(c) 10% reduction of marks for the relevant module 
(d) Zero mark for the relevant module 
(e) Zero mark for the relevant module with a cap on the mark for the repeat (if a repeat sitting is allowed by the Marks and Standards for the programme) of a pass mark for the relevant programme.
