Student Wins €10,000 with Tidy Shower product at NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards

Sean Mc Garry, a 3rd year NUI Galway student studying Physics with Advanced French for Science from Westport Co. Mayo, has won the top prize of €10,000 in this year’s NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards. His company, “The TidyShower Co.”, has designed a range of contemporary bathroom accessories which solely focus on minimizing clutter and maximizing experience, thereby helping to breathe joy back into your shower time. The founder of “The Tidy Shower Co.” was presented with his prize by local entrepreneur Pat Divilly and judging panel member Dr Aidan Daly together with NUI Galway President, Dr James J. Browne and NUI Galway Students’ Union President, Declan Higgins.

The competition which is an initiative of NUI Galway Students’ Union is supported by NUI Galway and seeks to foster a spirit of entrepreneurship amongst students. In its five years, the competition has attracted entries from students studying a variety of subjects.

The two runner-up prizes of €5,000 each were awarded to “The Creative Native” and “Safe Farming Solutions”. The Creative Native” is a business development idea to create innovative digital educational resources for the modern learner. “The Creative Native” team consists of two final year PhD students, Eilis Flanagan from Donegal and Ali Mc Namara from Limerick.

Safe Farming Solutions” consists of a newly designed bolt that aims to improve farm safety and convenience when attaching machinery onto tractors. Aaron Duignan a 4th year student studying Corporate Law (International) from Carrick on Shannon in County Leitrim is the creator of “Safe Farming Solutions”.

Pat Divilly, who spoke at the awards ceremony said: “I’m thrilled to have been asked to speak at the SU Enterprise Awards. Setting up a business and going after a vision can be the most rewarding journey but can also bring massive challenges and even self-doubt. It’s important that young entrepreneurs and aspiring entrepreneurs are encouraged and mentored to instil confidence and belief in them. The SU have done a brilliant job in putting this event together and it was a brilliant evening”.

NUI Galway Students’ Union President, Declan Higgins said: “We have been overwhelmed by the number and standard of entries to the NUI Galway Students’ Union Enterprise Awards. The entrants are testament to the exceptional initiative and creativity of students in social and business enterprise. They show that students are both able and willing to create the big ideas that will help fuel our recovery. The Students’ Union is delighted to be in a position to facilitate some of these ideas as they take their first steps. I have no doubt but that we are working with the leaders of the future.”

Making a Makerspace at NUI Galway

A Makerspace is a do-it-yourself space where students can access equipment, tools and software to ‘make stuff’. It’s a place where students from different colleges and schools can come together to share ideas and work on projects. The idea is that students have a well-equipped shared space where they can – Make, Break, Fix and Learn.

We are going to add a Makerspace to the James Hardiman library and are looking for suggestions and ideas from students and staff as to what it should contain.

If you do a search on the web for “What’s a makerspace” you will see that they come in all shapes and sizes. They vary from a simple room with a few computers all the way up to complete buildings stocked with millions of euro worth of equipment capable of 3D printing a car. Our vision is somewhere in the middle – at least to start with.

Initially we think we should include at least: 3D Printer, PC’s for design, Raspberry Pi hardware, Arduino boards.

To help us decide if these are correct and what else we should include we have a short requirements gathering survey which we would like you to complete.
This will be YOUR Makerspace so please take a few minutes to tell us what you want the JHL Makerspace to be! https://vovici.com/wsb.dll/s/2e2cg57bb1

Researchers sought!

Galway City is the first City in Ireland to develop a strategy to prevent and reduce alcohol-related harm. You can be part of a research project.  You will receive training and €10 mobile phone top up credit for each week of participating (€40 mobile top up credit in total) as a gesture of thanks.

What do you do? Researchers download an alcohol marketing monitoring ap and then each time you see marketing (poster, online, etc.) you log it on the ap. The overall aim of this project is to monitor the exposure of young people to alcohol marketing in Galway city. You will get on-going support and a chance to work on an international research project. To participate come along to the welcome session: 1.00-2.00pm Tuesday 3rd March in the Space, upstairs Áras na Mac Léinn. For further information email alive@nuigalway.ie

Complete the National Student Survey

A national Student Survey is being carried out, which aims to help enhance the quality of education Irish students receive by asking you in detail about your experiences.   It is the only national student survey in Ireland, and it is important for the University to make sure our students’ views are well represented.

As a thank you for your participation, NUI Galway is offering you the opportunity to win an iPad Air 2!  Just tick a box at the end of the survey to be included in the prize draw. The winner will be chosen at random.

What you need to know

  • Only first year, final year and Postgraduate taught students can take the survey.
  • The survey will run in NUI Galway between Monday, 23 February and Sunday 15 March.
  • The survey is available at www.studentsurvey.ie
  • The survey comprises 100 questions.

We are going to add a Makerspace to the Library and are looking for suggestions and ideas from students and staff as to what it should contain.

Initially we think we should include at least: 3D Printer, PC’s for design, Raspberry Pi hardware and Arduino boards.

To help us decide if these are correct and what else we should include we have a short requirements gathering survey which we would like you to complete. This will be YOUR Makerspace so please take a few minutes to tell us what you want the JHL Makerspace to be! Contact us at: libmakerspace@nuigalway.ie
