Easter Holiday Arrangements 2014

$1·         The Students’ Union Office will be closed Thursday 17th April-Tuesday 22nd April inclusive.

$1·         The Student Health Unit will be closed Thursday 17th April-Wednesday 23rd April inclusive.

$1·         The James Hardiman Library will be closed Saturday 19th & Sunday 20th April with reduced hours on Good Friday & Easter Monday (10am-6pm)

$1·         The College Bar will be closed Thursday 17th April-Monday 21st April Inclusive.

$1·         The SU Cloakroom will be closed Thursday 17th April-Sunday 27th April Inclusive.

$1·         The SU Shop will be closed Friday 18th April-Monday21st April Inclusive.

$1·         Smokey’s Café will be closed Friday 18th April-Monday 21st April Inclusive.

$1·         The SU Engineering desk will be closed Thursday 17th April-Sunday 27th April Inclusive.

$1·         The Hub Café will be closed Monday 14th April-Tuesday 22nd April Inclusive.

$1·         Café Áras na Gaeilge will be closed Saturday 12th April-Tuesday 22nd April Inclusive.

$1·         The Wall Café will be open throughout Easter with some reduced hours.

Good News for September! 
1. The NUI Galway student ID card replacement fee will be reduced from €30 to €20 coming into effect in the next academic year 2014/15.
2. All repeat examination results will now be available on Friday the 5th of September 2014 before college commences on Monday the 8th of September. This means that all repeat students will be able to register for Blackboard etc., from the first day of term.
Well done to our SU Education Officer Catherine Breslin who has been working hard on these issues, on your behalf, with the Exams office this year.

NUI Galway Students’ Union 50th Anniversary Reunion: Saturday 7th June 2014

All past and present NUI Galway Students’ Union officers, staff, journalists, colleagues and friends are invited to join with us to celebrate as the Union turns 50. 

The reunion is taking place in the College Bar, NUI Galway from 7pm onwards on Saturday 7th June 2014. Tickets are €15 – price includes BBQ, dessert, refreshments, entertainment and lots of surprises along the way.

Locker Clear Out Deadline Friday 16th May

We know you have become attached to them and they feel like a home away from home BUT all lockers need to be emptied by 5pm on Friday 16th of May. Items not removed will be disposed of. You can drop your key (just the key leave the lock on the locker please!) up to the Students’ Union office in Áras na Mac Léinn Monday – Friday 10am-5pm.  

Examination Advice for Students – Mobile Phones Not Permitted in the Exam Hall

Be aware of Examination Regulations and review them before your exams.

Mobile phones will be confiscated for the duration of the exam and a fine of €20 will apply in each case. A breach of exam regulations will apply. The possible penalties are as follows:

(a) Letter of reprimand
(b) 5% reduction of marks for the relevant module
(c) 10% reduction of marks for the relevant module
(d) Zero mark for the relevant module
(e) Zero mark for the relevant module with a cap on the mark for the repeat (if a repeat sitting is allowed by the Marks and Standards for the programme) of a pass mark for the relevant programme.

Autumn Exams

Autumn exams are scheduled for Tuesday, 5th August to Friday, 15th August 2014 (inclusive). 

Darkness Into Light Saturday 10th May

Registrations are now open for the Galway and Tuam Darkness Into Light walks which take place at 4.15am on Saturday, May 10. All funds raised go to suicide prevention charity Pieta House, which opened its first West of Ireland facility in Tuam last December. There is a special student registration rate of €15 Register here.

Exam De-stress Programme

You can book a de-stressing treatment, including massage, acupuncture, osteopathy, reflexology, hypnotherapy, shiatsu, and craniosacral therapy – 30 minute treatment is €10. Email destressbooking@nuigalway.ieto book. The Chaplaincy are offering their famous ‘Breakfast-in-a-bag’ at pre-exam mass, each morning during exams. Are you registered to vote in the European & Local elections on 23rd May 2014? If you are entitled to vote but don’t appear on the register the closing date for inclusion on the Supplemental Register of Electors is the 6th of May. The Postal and Special Supplement closing date is the 26th April. Application forms are available here.

Naked Calendar on Sale Monday Afternoon

The NUI Galway Students’ Union 2014 Naked Calendar goes on sale this Monday 4th November at 3pm. 63 brave NUI Galway students revealed all for the calendar and you can get an eyeful for only €5! Calendars will be on sale from the Students’ Union Office, the SU Shop, the SocsBox, our desk at Smokey’s and the SU desk in the Engineering Building (11am-3pm Monday-Friday). All proceeds go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline.

Our next comedy gig is Republic of Telly star Bernard O’Shea and Support on Monday 11th November at 8pm in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets are on sale now for just €5 in the SU Office and at the SU desk in the Engineering Building (11am-3pm Monday-Friday).

White Collar Fight Night 14th November

The NUI Galway Students’ Union White Collar Fight Night is back on Thursday 14th November in the Bailey Allen Hall. The event is in aid of the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC/Childline. Doors 7pm, first fight 7.45pm. Tickets on sale in the SU office Monday 4th November: €12 for adults, €7.50 for students, under 18’s & OAPs. Children under 12 go free.

Let’s Talk Wednesday 6th November

The Students’ Union and their Welfare Crew, in conjunction with four Commerce students, will be running a ‘Let’s Talk’ campaign on campus on Wednesday 6th November, to encourage people to talk about their problems, issues or concerns. We will be giving out free goodie bags so keep an eye out for the bright green t-shirts! Connacht vs Glasgow Tickets

We now have €10 NUI Galway Student tickets on sale for the next Connacht Rugby home game on Saturday 2nd November at 5pm against Glasgow at the Sportsground.  

Hardiman Research Scholarships

NUI Galway is offering Hardiman Research Scholarships for Structured PhD programmes. These scholarships are fully-funded four-year PhD scholarships. ISIC Cards now on sale in SU

We are now selling ISIC Cards in the Students’ Union office. The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is the only globally recognised student ID with 41,000 benefits in 126,000 locations. The card costs just €15 and lasts until December 2014. We take your photo and print it off straight away Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. https://www.isiccard.ie/about/

Focus group discussion on Ireland’s International Education Strategy

ICOS and USI invite you to participate in a focus group discussion on Ireland’s International Education Strategy to be held on Wednesday November 6th in Aras na Mac Leinn, Meeting Room 2 from 5pm until 7pm

Ireland’s 2010 strategy, “Investing in Global Relationships”, set out a vision that Ireland would “offer a high-quality education, strong integration with domestic students, and an unparalleled experience that adds significant value to the career outcomes of all who are educated here.” The views of students both Irish and international are particularly important when considering some of the questions that now need to be addressed.
