UPDATE: Regarding Exam Results and Fee Deadline

We have been made aware that many students are still waiting on their provisional semester 1 exam results and that this is causing a lot of concern as the deadline for the payment of the remainder of fees is today Thursday 31st of January. We have been working with the various departments in the University this week to try to get provisional exam results issued ASAP as we know this might impact on students decision to continue their course.

We have been advised that the Fees Office do not hold Semester 1 exam results for students with outstanding fees.

Students are advised to check Blackboard for information about provisional result release dates in the first instance or contact your College/School Office.

SU Free Cloakroom Open TODAY

The SU Free Cloakroom is open 9am-6pm Thursdays and Fridays during term. It’s located near the SU XL Shop.

Student Leap Cards

Remember you can now purchase and top up your Student Leap Cards in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. You can top up your Leap Card with us for monetary amounts or put your weekly/monthly bus ticket on it.

To get your Leap Card:

  2. Bring your code to the SU Office and we will issue your card for €10. Please note the code is only valid for 7 days.

Volunteers URGENTLY Needed

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our annual charity collection day in Galway City this Saturday 2nd of February for the following time slots: 1pm-3pm or 3pm-5pm. You will be holding a collection bucket and asking the public to donate what they can to the SU Nominated Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and COPE Galway. NUIG Postgrad Open Day on Wednesday

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place 12pm-3pm Wednesday, 6th February in the Bailey Allen Hall. The event will include short presentations covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research. This is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, and other student support services. Free safeTALK Course

Online Registration Open for free safeTALK Course 9.30am-1pm Weds 27th Feb in Westside Resource Centre. safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares attendees, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources. safeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of suicide-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert suicide risks.

Action Panels are where young people meet and decide new content ideas for SpunOut.ie. This ensures that the information on www.spunout.ie is based on what young people aged 16-25 across the country want to know about. Action Panels are based in Dublin, Waterford, Cork and Galway and they each meet three times a year. As an Action panel member there are a number of training opportunities such as on how to be an effective advocate for causes you care about, as well as receiving personal and professional guidance.

Today you are asked to vote to elect your SU Part Time Officers for 2015/16. You are also asked to vote in a referendum on an amendment to the Students’ Union Constitution. Your vote is your voice so make sure you use it!

Polling Stations will are open in the following locations and you need your NUIG ID with you to vote:

  • Áras na Mac Léinn 11am-8pm
  • Engineering Building 12pm-4pm
  • Remote Vote 10am-8pm on SU Website (for those who registered before midnight last night)

SU Personal Safety  and Awareness Course now enrolling€5

We are now enrolling students for our Personal Safety and Awareness course which takes place 1pm-5pm Thursday 19th March. The cost of the course is €5 and you can sign up now in the Students’ Union Office.

Course Aim/objectives: To instil a focused and active sense of personal safety and awareness of dangers in the course participants and point them towards further help and education. This course is being run by Dave King of the SU Security Team in conjunction with the Gardaí.

The ALIVE certificate recognises your hard work as a volunteer whether that’s through your work as a Class Rep, an SU volunteer, a society member, a club member or volunteering in a charity. 8 Week Yoga Course €40

The next 8 week Yoga course with Marese Cregg is now enrolling in the Students’ Union Office. The cost of the course is €40 and you can sign up in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm or phone 091 493570 to pay by credit card. The course will run from Thursday 19th March to Thursday 14th of May – please note that there is no class on Thursday 7th of May.

#NUIGSU15 Election Results so far

Congratulations to the newly elected NUI Galway Students’ Union Sabbatical officers who will take up office on the 1st of July. They are: President Phelim Kelly, Vice-President/Education Officer Rebecca Melvin and Vice-President/Welfare Officer Jimmy McGovern. Cathal Sherlock was also elected as your SU Council Chair for the year ahead. The students of NUI Galway also voted that the Students’ Union will now actively support the legalisation and regulation of the cultivation, sale and possession of cannabis for adults aged 18 years and over. 

No nominations were received for the positions of SU Mature Students’ Officer and SU Convenor of the School of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences so we will be reopening nominations for these two positions shortly. Contact studentsunion@nuigalway.ie if you are interested in running.

My name is Lisa Hynes and I am a fourth year occupational therapy student here in NUI Galway. I am currently seeking university students with a diagnosis of developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia) to participate in a research study exploring participation in daily life activities. Participants will be asked to complete one confidential interview with the researcher in Áras Moyola, NUI Galway.

SafeTALK Suicide Alertness Course

SafeTALK Suicide Alertness Course Thursday, 26th March 6:30-9:30pm G010 Moore Institute seminar room, Hardiman Building

What is safeTALK? safeTALK is a suicide alertness programme that prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. These specific skills are called suicide alertness and are taught with the expectation that the person learning them will use them to help save lives. This course is being run by the HSE West with the support of NUI Galway Health Promotion Service

A national Student Survey is being carried out, which aims to help enhance the quality of education Irish students receive by asking you in detail about your experiences.   It is the only national student survey in Ireland, and it is important for the University to make sure our students’ views are well represented.

As a thank you for your participation, NUI Galway is offering you the opportunity to win an iPad Air 2!  Just tick a box at the end of the survey to be included in the prize draw. The winner will be chosen at random.

What you need to know

  • Only first year, final year and Postgraduate taught students can take the survey.
  • The survey will run in NUI Galway between Monday, 23 February and Sunday 15 March.
  • The survey is available at www.studentsurvey.ie
  • The survey comprises 100 questions.
  • Students can partially complete the survey and return to the questions at any time while the survey is open. Answers will be saved and students have the possibility to change their answers up until the survey closes.

Registration is open for Darkness Into Light in aid of Pieta House

Starting at 4.15am, and crossing the line just as dawn is breaking, the phenomenon that is Darkness Into Light, the annual 5km walk/run in aid of Pieta House will celebrate its seventh year on Saturday, May 9th 2015, with 80 venues across Ireland and beyond lined up including Salthill in Galway. Notice of Referendum Thursday 12th March 2015

Referendum on Constitutional Amendment proposed by Students’ Union Executive Committee

On Thursday 12 March you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not to approve an amendment to article 17 of the Students’ Union Constitution as proposed by the Executive Committee.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following constitutional amendment which has been proposed by the Students’ Union Executive Committee:

At Article 17.C replace “Students Union Executive” with “the Board of Trustees as members of the Company”.

Delete Article 17.D in its entirety and re-designate the subsequent sub-articles accordingly.

At the end of the current Article 17.E (to be re-designated 17.D) insert the following new provision:

Once deemed elected, the incoming President of the Students’ Union shall be a non-voting attendee at the Board of Directors until s/he commence his/her term of office as President.

This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.

What is safeTALK? safeTALK is a suicide alertness programme that prepares participants to identify persons with thoughts of suicide and connect them to suicide first aid resources. These specific skills are called suicide alertness and are taught with the expectation that the person learning them will use them to help save lives. This course is being run by the HSE West with the support of NUI Galway Health Promotion Service

Part Time Officer Elections Thursday 12th March

Polling will take place on Thursday 12th March to elect the SU Part Time Officers for 2015/16. Nominations for these positions are now closed. Polling stations will be in An Bialann (10am-7pm), Áras na Mac Léinn (11am-8pm) and Engineering Building (12pm-4pm). Voting for the Clubs Captain and Society Auditor will only take place in An Bialann and only captains and auditors may vote in this election. Bring NUIG ID with you to vote.

 

Edithathon 5pm Tuesday 10th March

The Wiki-Project in Ireland and the Academic Writing Centre are delighted to invite you to an editathon on Women in History.

The editathon is a chance to hone your editing, writing, and research skills while improving the quality of free information resources. The event will take place on at 5pm on Tuesday 10th March. 

Participants will learn how to edit Wikipedia articles and use Library resources. All are welcome. Event Registration.

Register for your Remote Vote by midnight Weds 11th March

Students who will not be able to access any of the on-campus polling stations on Thursday 12th of March may cast their vote online using Remote Vote between 10am and 8pm. Please note that you must first register for your Remote Vote before midnight on Wednesday 11th of March by logging on to the SU Website– registration will open on Friday 6th March.

Please note: Remote vote cannot be used for Societies Chairperson or Clubs’ Captain election. Proxy forms are available from the SU for captains/auditors to transfer their vote.

Scheduled downtime for the WiFi Service
To facilitate essential maintenance the WiFi service will be unavailable on campus between 19:00 and 23:00 on Friday 13th March. In addition, the WiFi service will remain unavailable in the James Hardiman Library between 19:00 on Friday 13th March until 17:30 on Sunday 15th March.  This downtime will affect both NUIGWiFi and eduroam users.

The wired network service will not be impacted. If you have any queries, please contact the Service Desk (Tel. 091 495777 Email servicedesk@nuigalway.ie).

Complete the National Student Survey – Win an iPad Air 2!

A national Student Survey is being carried out, which aims to help enhance the quality of education Irish students receive by asking you in detail about your experiences.   It is the only national student survey in Ireland, and it is important for the University to make sure our students’ views are well represented.

As a thank you for your participation, NUI Galway is offering you the opportunity to win an iPad Air 2!  Just tick a box at the end of the survey to be included in the prize draw. The winner will be chosen at random.

What you need to know

  • Only first year, final year and Postgraduate taught students can take the survey.
  • The survey will run in NUI Galway between Monday, 23 February and Sunday 15 March.
  • The survey is available at www.studentsurvey.ie
  • The survey comprises 100 questions.
  • Students can partially complete the survey and return to the questions at any time while the survey is open. Answers will be saved and students have the possibility to change their answers up until the survey closes.

Registration is open for Darkness Into Light in aid of Pieta House

Starting at 4.15am, and crossing the line just as dawn is breaking, the phenomenon that is Darkness Into Light, the annual 5km walk/run in aid of Pieta House will celebrate its seventh year on Saturday, May 9th 2015, with 80 venues across Ireland and beyond lined up including Salthill in Galway. Investigating the Tuam Mothers and Babies Home:  A Question of Human Rights”

On Monday 10 November, the Irish Centre for Human Rights will convene a public seminar, “Investigating the Tuam Mothers and Babies Home:  A Question of Human Rights”. Speakers will include Catherine Corless (keynote speaker), Kevin Higgins, Professor Michael O’Flaherty of the Irish Centre for Human Rights and Tanya Ward, Children’s Rights Alliance. The event will be chaired by Mark Kelly, Irish Council for Civil Liberties.  The seminar will run from 5 to 7pm at  NUI Galway MRI Annex- MRA201.  All are welcome.

Console is a national organisation supporting people in suicidal crisis and those bereaved by suicide through professional counselling, support and helpline services. BeLongTo support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people in Ireland. If you want to volunteer to help out with our fundraising events or have an idea for an event please email studentsunion@nuigalway.ie

Geraldine Lavelle, a 27-year-old NUI Galway graduate, is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a cycling accident last October. On Sunday 16th of November at 11am there will be a fundraising walk/run at NUI Galway to help raise funds for her rehabilitation. You can sign up online to take part now for just €10 here.
