If you are still not registered to vote there is still time! We have the forms up here in the SU Office for you to fill out, get stamped at the Garda Stationand return to your City or County Council. You have until Tuesday the 5th of May to get your form to your City/County Council. DO IT!

Nepalese Earthquake Appeal  

Draíocht Society will be holding a coffee afternoon fundraiser TODAY 2.30pm-6pm in The Space upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn. Please come along and support. They will also have a collection day in Galway on Friday 15th May in aid of the victims of the Nepalese Earthquake. Please give what you can and if you have any time to spare to help them with the collection email them on

Bus Éireann Strike This Weekend

Reminder if you are planning on heading home this weekend there is a Bus Éireann strike planned for Friday and Saturday so you might need to make new travel plans. Some websites that might help you get home:

Remember to cash in any points on your SU Card and spend any balances before you leave for summer. You can access your SU Card account through the SU Website:

Although your card will still work in September, points cannot be carried forward to next year.

Connacht vs Ospreys Tickets €10

We now have €10 NUIG student tickets on sale for the last Connacht home match of the season against the Ospreys at 3pm Saturday 16th May.

Please note all lockers must be cleared out by Friday 15th May 2015

Please remember to drop your locker keys back to the Students’ Union Office by 5pm on Friday the 15th May 2015. Any items left in your locker after the 15th May 2015 will be disposed of.

Blood Donation clinics will be held 5pm-8.30pm on Tuesday 5th, Wednesday 6th and Thursday 7th of May in the Clayton Hotel, Ballybrit.

Tidy Towns Clean Up On Monday – Volunteers Needed

Galway City Tidy Towns clean up takes place this Monday, 4th May, at 11am, meeting at the bridge beside Millennium Children’s Playground near Galway Cathedral. Volunteers are needed to help remove paint and graffiti.

Pint of Science is taking place on Monday 18th and Tuesday 19th of May in the Oslo in Salthill. There is a great line up of speakers from NUI Galway tackling the themes of Our Body and Technology & Planet Earth over the two evenings. You can register now for your free tickets for the event here.

German Photography Competition

Germany through my Lens is a photography competition organised by the Discipline of German at NUI Galway and  the German Department at GMIT.  We are asking students, registered for 2014-15 at NUI Galway or GMIT,  to submit any photo they have taken themselves of any aspect of Germany that impressed them.  Deadline for submissions is 15th September 2015.

Bank Holiday  Monday 4th May Arrangements

The SU Office, the Student Health Unit, SU Cloakroom, The College Bar, Caife na Gaeilge and SU Engineering Desk will all be closed on Monday for the Bank Holiday.

The Library will be open Monday 4th May 08:30-22:00 but the service desk will be closed.

Smokey’s Café will be open 09:00-17:30 Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th of May.

The Wall Café will be open 09:00-17:30 Saturday 2nd, Sunday 3rd and Monday 4th of May.

The Hub Café, Computer DISC, the Academic Writing Centre and SUMS are all now closed for the summer.

Comedy Hypnotist – Tickets on sale NOW!

At 8pm on Monday 10th of February comedy hypnotist Michael McCoy will be back in NUI Galway doing his SeX Rated show as part of SHAG Week. Tickets are just €5 and are on sale now in the SU Office and at our desk in the Engineering Building (11am-3pm)  – this gig will sell out again so make sure you don’t miss out! 2014 SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week) takes place from the 10th to the 14th of February. Student Travelcards Update

Our Student Travelcard  Machine is finally working again so we can take your photo and print off your travelcard straight away in the SU Office for €15 Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. We are also able to issue ISIC Cards for €15 which work worldwide as student identification.

Volunteers needed for SU Charity Collection Day

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 8th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. SU Charity Aquathon – Win tickets to the Sea Sessions!

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 25th of February 2014. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan. 

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €25 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. We now have an extra incentive to get you involved as the Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival have kindly given us a pair of tickets for the participant who raises the most money for charity! You can sign up in the Students’ Union office and the Sports Centre now and collect your Sponsorship Card. You can also fundraise online via our iDonate page here. Entry includes free t-shirt and food for all participants. We also have a 5 week training plan to get you ready on our website here.

Seminar  ‘What drives attitudes about organ donation?

Friday 31st January at 8:00 pm sharp in Martin Ryan Annex Theatre 201. Speaker: Dr Eddie Rooney (Chief Executive, Public Health Agency, Northern Ireland; Chair of the NI committee on organ donation and transplantation. Followed by contributions by donor families and recipients and an introduction to the commemorative garden by Denis Goggin. Anyone interested in or affected by organ donation is invited to attend. Are you a young adult (18 – 25 years) living with type 1 diabetes?

If so, we invite you to an exciting and important evening where you will meet other people with type 1 diabetes. This is the first step in establishing a Youth Panel to design and share ideas to influence research in young adults with type 1 diabetes. Get involved and be a voice for young adults with diabetes. The event is being held on Wednesday 19th February 2014, from 6:30pm-8pm in JIGSAW, Fairgreen Road, Galway (opposite the new Coach Station). Suas Global Issues’ Course – Early Bird Rate now enrolling

The Global Issues’ Course is a seven week evening course which gives students an introduction to development issues in a critical, challenging, engaging and interactive way. This course is designed from a global justice perspective and provides a range of viewpoints on each of the key issues explored. Topics covered include an introduction to development, education, global health, trade and livelihoods, environmental sustainability and debt justice. The course will address each issue by looking at both the symptoms and the causes, as well as possible alternatives. The final session of the course will look at ‘what next’? and supports participants in finding a role for themselves to get involved and take action for positive change. On successful completion of the course all participants will receive a certificate.

The course will run for 7 weeks starting Tuesday 11 February from 6.30-8.30pm.

The cost for participants is €25 but an early bird price of €20 is available for participants who book and pay online at least one week before the course begins at The cost is subsidised by Irish Aid and EuropeAid. Any queries please email:

UCD’s Student Legal Convention, Ireland’s very first student legal forum, is taking place on Thursday 13th February. We’ve been invited to join many major players of the Irish legal, business and political system, and to take part in several workshops and seminars with them. Postgrad Open Day

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will be held in the Bailey Allen Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn (Student Centre), NUI Galway on Tuesday February 11, 2014. This is an excellent opportunity for you to talk to lecturers and current postgraduate students about the wide range of taught and research programmes available to you.

The AWC Annual Writing Competition is now live
All undergraduate students are eligible to compete. Essays must be on one of the three topics, can be no longer than 500 words, and must include citations from one or two published sources. The deadline is 21 February 2014. The winner will receive an Apple I-Pad 2; the essay will be published in Sin .Topics, guidelines, and FAQ can be found here.

The AWC provides free one-on-one tutorials on academic writing at 11-1 and 6-9 every day except Friday nights and weekends. More Information.


1st year Engineers – CÉIM Sessions

1st year Engineering students should take note of the times for their Semester 2 CÉIM sessions. These peer-assisted study sessions, led by 2nd years, will take place each week until the end of term. You were all assigned to a particular CÉIM Group early in September (Groups 1 to 10, below) and notified of this by email. If you are unsure of which CÉIM Group you are in, you can email, search for “CÉIM” in your student mail inbox or attend a CÉIM Group which is most convenient for you. All sessions take place in the Engineering Building.
