New Year Challenge

Our next Charity Challenge is our New Year Challenge which starts on the 1st of January. Each day in January we will be helping you to step outside your comfort zone by having daily suggestions at #NewYearChallenge for new things you can try for the new year. You could try a new sport, learn a new skill, volunteer or join a society. The opportunities are endless! It’s all about making small changes that can make a huge difference to you and the SU Charities. Find out more and register here.

 

Glassary – Donations of your Things welcome!

ALIVE volunteers are leading a circular economy and sustainability initiative. Donation boxes will be in all the main student accommodation central reception lobbies clearly labelled “Glassary” for you to drop any materials you do not want to bring back home and are willing to donate. Irons, lamps, rugs, books, buckets, you name it we are looking for it! (Except pillows and duvets!) All the donations will be collected and form the Library of Things at NUIG and also will be part of a donation to the SVP shops. So your donations will not go to the dump and instead make a big impact for future students and families in Galway. Email alive@nuigalway.ie to join in with us on this project or any questions you may have!

Hardiman PhD Scholarship Scheme Open

Applications are now open for the 2021 Hardiman PhD Scholarships scheme for new PhD Students starting Sept 2021. The Hardiman PhD Scholarships are fully funded for four years; with a stipend of €16,000 per annum,  plus fees are paid for the 4 years. Applications close 12th Feb. More info.

 

The Smarter Travel Campus Awards are back for 2021!

The Awards invite students to create entries to encourage and enable walking, cycling, public transport and carpooling. Why not get involved in a real-life project and you could be invited to the national awards ceremony where you will be in with a chance to win prizes and have your project showcased.

Christmas Hump Day Hoolie

Our last Hump Day Hoolie of 2020 will be a very merry Christmas party at 7.30pm Weds 16th Dec. Get your Christmas jumper, Santa hat and festive cheer ready to jingle all the way through Hump Day! Get your tickets here. The event is free but there’s a suggested donation of €5 which will all go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health. If you have enjoyed the Hoolies so far this year please give what you can! Good news is we will be back with more Hoolies in 2021!

Become a LIFT Student Facilitator

You often hear about leadership but what does it really mean? You can be a leader from your kitchen table! NUIG is running a pilot this year and we are inviting you to sign up as a LiFT Student Facilitator. LiFT is an 8 week programme, about 40 minutes a week a small group meet online and complete an 8 part leadership development programme. Used widely in sports and industry it is now available to NUIG students. As a facilitator you are trained in the LiFT programme and you then lead your small group in 40 minute meet ups for 8 weeks.

Home Truths

Home Truths is an exhibition inspired by women’s testimonies of their experiences of and engagement with the Irish courts and legal system in dealing with domestic violence and abuse. The exhibition is running as part of the 16 days of Action Against Violence Against Women and at 2pm today Thurs 10th Dec it will culminate in a live streamed panel discussion via Galway 2020 to mark International Human Rights Day. Virtual Christmas Quiz Tonight

NUIG FLAC and Best Buddies Societies are hosting a Virtual Christmas Quiz at 7pm tonight in aid of Ability West. Sign up as a team or individual HERE. Mature Students Drop-In Clinics

Weekly drop-In Clinics are available for all Mature Students (anyone over 23 years of age) whether you are an Undergrad, Postgrad or Adult Education student. Here you can discuss issues, challenges, ideas, suggestions, and much more. The clinics are hosted by your SU Mature Students’ Officer Michelle Mitchell on Zoom and are on 10am-12pm Tuesdays and 2pm-4pm Thursdays (links below). When you enter the meeting, you will be placed in a waiting room.  If you are not admitted immediately, please be patient as Michelle may be speaking with another student. Glassary – Sustainability Initiative for Students

Are you an international student departing Ireland in the coming months? Or are you simply an NUI Galway student who’d like to live more sustainably? Glassary (glas/green-glossary!) is a circular economy initiative which will be implemented at NUIG accommodations in December and January. Donate your leftover household items at an accommodation collection point to prevent them from going to waste! To donate, complete a very short survey here and contact Dara at d.kerins4@nuigalway.ie for more info!

 

SU Irish Classes

Want to learn Irish or improve the Irish you have? We will be holding Irish Language Classes Tues 12th Jan – Tues 2nd Feb 2021. It’s a 4 week course over Zoom with Conradh na Gaeilge. Complete Beginners 6pm-7pm and Improvers 7pm-8pm. Cost is €40 but you will be refunded €20 if you attend all classes and you get a certificate. Registration deadline Mon 21st Dec. Register online here.

 

Extra Study Space

There are now four options for study space on campus, which can all be booked through the Library booking system:

  • The Library: Desk and PC access within a quiet study zone in the main Library building
  • Bailey Allen Hall: Quiet study zone with space for 50 students
  • The Cube: Noise-tolerant study zone with space for 20 student
  • The Reading Room: Space for 20 students

Join the RAK Challenge! 

This December for our Charity Challenge we are going to spread positivity wherever we go with our Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Challenge. We will have daily suggestions for Random Acts of Kindness that you can do or you can come up with your own ones. The RAK challenge motto is do good, feel good! You can commit to taking part in as many RAKs as you want from 1 to 31 over the month! All funds raised during the challenge will go to the SU Charities who are: Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health via our fundraising page HERE.

Marchathon Update

Well done to all our Marchathon teams who have been working so hard to get their steps up on the Marchathon challenge so far! Special congrats to the Children’s Studies team for winning the team photo competition and the Overachievers for winning the SU Keep Cup team update competition.

Make sure to log your teams steps online by 2pm each Monday of the challenge. This week’s competitions are:

I am conducting a research project to investigate the screen time habits and sleep quality experienced by Irish college students. Book Hold Period Reduced

Based on student feedback the Library are reducing the amount of time a book is on hold from seven to three days. If you wish to place a hold on a book that is already checked out to another user, do so, but please remember that you now have three days to pick up the book from the Library before it will be released so that other users can borrow it.

NUIG Rent Hikes

We are outraged by the University’s decision to increase rent in on-campus student accommodation by 4% for 2020/21. This means that from September a single room in the campus Goldcrest student accommodation will be €750 a month. This is a huge barrier to accessing education.

The Effects of Emotion Regulation on our Physical and Psychological Wellbeing

This study is a 10 minute survey interested in looking at how our ability to control our emotions can impact  different aspects of our wellbeing such as stress and anxiety. It is also looking at why we have individual differences in our ability to regulate our emotions such as our attachment style.

Blood Donation: A Randomised Control Trial

Would you like to take part in a 4 minute online survey regarding individuals’ blood donation intentions and behaviours? For our final year psychology research experiment myself and Sophy Molloy are examining personality, the effect of reciprocity priming and mode of delivery on blood donation intentions and behaviours. George Moore Scholars Fund For Postgrad Study in USA

This is a €20 million programme (2020-30) to support up to 300 academically talented students who wish to undertake postgraduate study in the USA. The programme is open to students from all backgrounds who completed most of their education on the island of Ireland, and who attended one of the 11 universities of Ireland. Applications close 27th March. Students may also have applied for sources of support to other schemes, such as Fulbright, SFI, IRC or the NUI Travelling Studentship Awards. How does depersonalization and self-categorization affect students’ levels of social anxiety?

This study is concerned with exploring the relationship between NUIG undergrad students levels’ of Self-Categorization, Social Anxiety, Attachment Style, Experiential Avoidance and Depersonalization and should take approximately 20 mins to complete.

Are you an NUI Galway graduate? Make sure you register for your Seanad Éireann vote. Seanad Éireann is the Upper House of the Irish Legislature and is composed of sixty members. Three of these senators are elected by National University of Ireland graduates. You can get a registration form in the SU or online here. Please note that if you are not already registered you won’t be able to vote in the upcoming Seanad Éireann election.
