Michael Bugler Memorial Mass
The lunchtime Mass at 1.10pm on Tuesday, 19th January in the Chapel of St. Columbanus, NUI Galway will be offered for 2BCL student, Michael Bugler, R.I.P. and for his family and friends. Refreshments will be provided afterwards. All are welcome. A Book of Condolence is open at the Chapel this week if you wish to sign it.

Nominations open for election of a Postgraduate Student to Údarás na hOllscoile NUI Galway
Nomination are to be received in writing ( Gearóid Ó Conluain in Room A131, Quadrangle) by 12.00 noon on Friday, January 22, 2016. Each nomination must be on a Nomination Paper signed by two postgraduate students and also signed by the candidate. The names of the candidates will be notified to voters as soon as possible thereafter.
Election Procedure: The election will be conducted by ballot, if necessary, of the postgraduate students on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 in the Concourse from 10.00 to 21.00.
Volunteers Needed for SU Charity Collection Day
We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 6th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & The Irish Cancer Society. #MakeASmartVote General Election Hustings 7pm Tues 26th January
This event is open to everyone who wishes to #MakeASmartVote in the upcoming General Elections. The hustings will be hosted by the USI at 7pm Tuesday 26th January in the D’Arcy Thompson Theatre, NUI Galway.
Each political party has been invited to send a representative to represent their party’s views on the defining issues facing students.Students and youth organisations will be able to submit questions in advance or via social media on #MakeASmartVote and candidates will be announced as they are confirmed!

There is a global awareness of the mental and physical health benefits in early morning dancing. Events are being held all over the world where people get up early and dance before work and its becoming an extremely popular and common event in big cities. Dancing is a way to exercise, connect to your deepest self, to feel free, to let go of pent up energy and one of the best ways to start a day. We are organising this morning session for those of you who would like to “dance your way into the day” full of health and vitality. It is obviously a sober event and there will be yoga, massage, healthy snacks and drinks and all kinds of wonderful things there. The event starts at 6:30am – 10am. Costs are €3 for students and €10 for others. Includes DJ Will Softly, herbal teas/healthy snacks from The Secret Garden Café and free Yoga with Paul Hardiman at 7am and 8:30am – one energetic class and one deep slow stretchy class

Student presenters wanted for the national “Student Talks” conference on March 9th 2016 in UCD, Dublin.
Student Talks is an exciting new national conference series designed for students (think Ted Talks but for Students).
The conference is a half day long, with Student Presenters, Expert Speakers and Networking breaks scheduled throughout.
Student presenters each give a six minute presentation on their chosen subject. The Student Talks conference is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students, and it’s free to attend. We’ll be arranging buses to get you there too so register now!

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place on Wednesday, 3rd February in Áras na Mac Léinn 12pm-4pm. Presentations taking place during the day will cover such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research. There will be over 80 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services.

RTÉ are recruiting 1916 Ambassadors
RTÉ are recruiting 1916 ambassadors for their event, “RTÉ Reflecting the Rising” which will take place in 75 indoor and outdoor venues around Dublin on Easter Monday 28th March between 11am and 6pm.
This will form part of the government’s official centenary programme with locations including St. Stephen’s Green, the Gaiety Theatre, the Mansion House, Trinity College, Liberty Hall, the Four Courts, Smithfield Square and Collins Barracks. Drugs.ie ‘Let’s Talk About Drugs’ National Youth Media Awards Competition Closing Date 28th of January
This annual drugs education competition aims to help young people explore and understand various issues relating to drug and alcohol use in Irish society. To enter, young people are asked to create either: a short video, an audio podcast, a news article; or a poster on one of the following themes: (a) The hidden harm of alcohol use; (b) The effects of drug use. ASIST Course now enrolling
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two day skills building workshop in suicide first-aid. Ireland ranks 5th in the EU for rates of suicide with almost 500 people dying by suicide every year. Suicide first aid helps meet some of the challenges in reducing suicidal behaviour. It could help save a life. ASIST trains participants to reduce the immediate risk of a suicide and increase the support for a person at risk. It helps them seek a shared understanding of reasons for suicide and reasons for living.
The 2 day course will take place 9am-5pm Thursday 11th and Friday 12th February in Áras na Mac Léinn and you must attend both days.
The course is free but there is a €10 deposit required to reserve your place. Spaces are limited – sign up now in the Students’ Union Office Monday-Friday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm.
