If you have booked a seat in the Library or the Bailey Allen Hall and can no longer make your booking please cancel it! Only 55% of people are showing up for seat bookings. Be sound and don’t leave someone else stressing without a seat. Book a seat here.

 

RAK Challenge

This December for our Charity Challenge we are going to spread positivity wherever we go with our Random Acts of Kindness (RAK) Challenge. We will have daily suggestions for Random Acts of Kindness that you can do or you can come up with your own ones. The RAK challenge motto is do good, feel good! You can commit to taking part in as many RAKs as you want from 1 to 30 over the month! All funds raised during the challenge will go to the SU Charities who are: Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health via our fundraising page HERE.

Sign the International Students Petition

International students have not been adequately considered in Ireland’s COVID-19 response. They are calling on the Government to:

  • Resolve the immigration appointment and application backlogs
  • Re-classify international students to avoid unreasonable healthcare costs
  • Consider international students when making policy decisions

Financial Aid Fund Update

HEAR/Access Fund + PME Fund are now closed. There’s no fixed closing date for the Means Tested Fund + the Hardship Fund but funding is limited so apply as soon as you can. More info.

Registering with NUIG Disability Support Service (DSS)

Students with evidence of a disability, long-term physical or mental health condition, or a specific learning disability should register with the DSS. You only need to register with the DSS once and this remains in place for the duration of your course. You can register with the DSS at any stage during your studies; however, it is recommended that you register as soon as possible after starting your course or receiving a diagnosis. More info.

Survey Being a Student during Covid-19

This is a survey about being a student during the time of COVID-19 and is intended for NUIG students ONLY. It is being undertaken as part of a module in Research Methods. The NUI Galway VIRTUAL Postgraduate Open Day will take place next Tuesday, 24th November. The event will comprise of a series of live presentations taking place during the day featuring all Colleges and postgrad courses, and also such topics as employability, funding opportunities, applications, research, and personal statements. This is your opportunity to virtually meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to talk online with staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Fees Office, and other student support services. Blackboard Ally for students

Students – do you know that Blackboard Ally allows you to access more user-friendly file formats for online learning? It is very easy to use and can be really helpful. Simply click on the ‘A’ beside a file! You can get an audio version of a document, or you can download formats that are easier to read on a phone or mobile device. You can learn more HERE

 

NUIG Strava Club

If you want to win while you run join the NUIG Sport Strava Cub. This is a virtual running group where challenges will be set each week and weekly prizes to the value of €50 will be up for grabs. It’s a great incentive to get outside and stay active!

 

Need Help Getting Organised?

Notion is a task tracking app that allows you to set up checklists, calendars, task tables etc., You can add due dates and attach documents to tasks. It can be downloaded on all Android, iOS and Windows devices. By setting up an account with your NUIG email, you can get a Personal Pro plan for free (go to setting > plans > personal pro > upgrade)

 

Misleór Festival starts Today

The Misleór Festival runs 19th-21st Nov celebrating the heritage of nomadic cultures. Join their online festival featuring music, art, storytelling, poetry and cinema from around the world. More info.

 

The Big Big Science Quiz

Mature Students Drop-In Clinics

Weekly drop-In Clinics are available for all NUIG Mature Students. The clinics are hosted by your SU Mature Students’ Officer Michelle Mitchell on Zoom and are on 10am-12pm Tuesdays and 2pm-4pm Thursdays (links below). Extra Study Space

There are now an extra 50 seats that are bookable Mon-Fri 9am-5pm for 2 hour slots in the Bailey Allen Hall via the library website. This is an interactive learning space with individual pods with sockets so you can talk on Zoom calls or attend your CÉIM sessions. The Library is now open Mon-Fri 08:30-22:00 Sat 08:30-17:30 Sun 10:00-17:30. Please remember to book your library seat first here.

 

Join the Kilometre Challenge

Our November Charity Challenge is the Kilometre Challenge which runs until Mon 30th Nov and you can still join in! You set yourself a personal goal for each month based around each charity challenge theme so this month you pick a number of kilometres to cover and you can do this by walking, running or on wheels. It’s not a one size fits all event – you know your own capabilities so you do you! More info + Registration link here.

All funds raised from the challenge will go to the SU Charity Fund supporting Galway Rape Crisis Centre, Galway Autism Partnership and Helplink Mental Health. You can donate to the charities online here.

Weekly drop-In Clinics are available for all Mature Students (anyone over 23 years of age) whether you are an Undergrad, Postgrad or Adult Education student. Here you can discuss issues, challenges, ideas, suggestions, and much more. The clinics are hosted by your SU Mature Students’ Officer Michelle Mitchell on Zoom and are on 10am-12pm Tuesdays and 2pm-4pm Thursdays (links below). CARA Connect Programme

We recognise that this is a particularly isolating time for those in our campus community, with some feeling isolated, lonely, or disconnected from those around them. To work to combat these feelings we have developed the CARA Connect Programme which aims to support the power of conversation and connection. This programme is a peer buddy system, where students in similar locations around Galway City will be matched together to meet up for safe socially distant activities (e.g., walks/exercise, set up a weekly call/coffee or just to have someone you can say hello to each week!). The system will help participants to increase social interactions and form new friendships with other students and their peers. If you would like to participate in CARA Connect please complete the application form here

Asthma Self-Management Masterclass Today

The Asthma Society of Ireland are hosting a webinar, an Asthma Self-Management Masterclass, at 5.30pm today Thurs 12th Nov via Zoom. The webinar aims to educate people with asthma, their carer’s and healthcare professionals on how to stay well during winter, focusing on the importance of medication compliance, inhaler technique, flu/pneumo vaccine and the importance of completing an Asthma Action plan with a healthcare professional. Registration is free and can be completed using this link.

 

First ever NUIG Zine – Contributors and Editors Welcome!

The NUIG Zine encourages people to get creative or start a new hobby! It doesn’t matter your level of experience in writing or photography, they want to receive submissions from and include as many people as possible in this project. Language Proficiency Study Participants Required

Are You Anxious about your Asthma or COPD?

The Asthma Society have an Asthma and COPD WhatsApp messaging service. This service is free of charge and allows people with asthma and their carer’s, to send a WhatsApp message to 086 059 0132, to start their conversation with an experienced respiratory nurse specialist to seek support, advice and information about their asthma.

 

Participants Needed: COVID-19 Study

Irish undergraduate and graduate students (age 18+) are being recruited for a study exploring how diet, sleep, and physical activity impact resilience to stress during the COVID-19 pandemic. This is an international collaboration involving USA, Netherlands, Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan, China and Uganda as well as Ireland. The questionnaire takes about 30 minutes to complete and will be open until 20th Nov. Complete survey here.

Our office is still closed so we can’t currently process Student Leap Card applications and we don’t have a reopening date yet. Child Protection Training

Do you work or volunteer with children/young people? Our Child Protection Training Course covers topics relevant to staff and volunteers working directly with children and young people. It covers policy, legislation, attitudes and values, definitions and signs of abuse, safe recruitment, code of behaviour and scenarios. The course cost is €15. Course takes place 9am-1pm Fri 6th Dec or 2pm-6pm Fri 6th Dec. Limited spaces left – sign up in the SU.

Are you registered to vote? Call down and pick up a form in the SU Office. The deadline to register to vote is Friday the 25th of October.

Disclosure Training

Would you know what to do if a friend came to you saying they had suffered sexual violence? Our half day Disclosure Training course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence, in settings where this is likely to occur. The course is delivered by Galway Rape Crisis Centre 10am-1.30pm Tues 5th Nov and costs €10. Limited spaces left – sign up in the SU.

Student Leap Cards now just €10

To get your shiny new Student Leap Cards all you need to do is apply online HERE, then bring your code next week (it only lasts 7 days), your new college ID and €10 up to the SU Office. These are valid until the 31st of Dec 2020 and we can also top your card up for you.

Seas Suas Training Applications Open

Seas Suas is a bystander intervention training programme run by NUI Galway, which aims to promote the health & well-being of its students and wider community. The objective of Seas Suas is to increase awareness of situations where a person may need support, develop skills to respond safely, and encourage agency and initiative in helping fellow students. Call for parents to take part in a survey on Children, Food and family Mealtimes

We would like to invite parents to take part in a research study that explores children’s eating and approach to food. We are interested in exploring what influences children’s approach to food. UPDATE: Regarding Exam Results and Fee Deadline

We have been made aware that many students are still waiting on their provisional semester 1 exam results and that this is causing a lot of concern as the deadline for the payment of the remainder of fees is today Thursday 31st of January. We have been working with the various departments in the University this week to try to get provisional exam results issued ASAP as we know this might impact on students decision to continue their course.

We have been advised that the Fees Office do not hold Semester 1 exam results for students with outstanding fees.

Students are advised to check Blackboard for information about provisional result release dates in the first instance or contact your College/School Office.

SU Free Cloakroom Open TODAY

The SU Free Cloakroom is open 9am-6pm Thursdays and Fridays during term. It’s located near the SU XL Shop.

Remember you can now purchase and top up your Student Leap Cards in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. You can top up your Leap Card with us for monetary amounts or put your weekly/monthly bus ticket on it.

Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources. safeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of suicide-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert suicide risks.

Action Panels are where young people meet and decide new content ideas for SpunOut.ie. Financial Aid Fund Applications Close on Monday

The Financial Aid Fund comprises of : (A) The Student Assistance Fund (SAF) which is intended to tackle disadvantage by providing financial support to students who require financial support to enable them to fully benefit from their third level studies. Students can apply for funding for living expenses (excluding loans and fees). (b) Application for payment of fees in instalments, removal of late fee penalties or fee reduction (only granted in certain circumstances). The Financial Aid Fund is now open for Semester 2, 2018/19. Students following a full-time or part-time course of at least one year’s duration leading to an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification can apply to the fund. Students are only eligible to apply once in the academic year for living expenses to the Financial Aid Fund. The University’s decision on your application is final. Applications close 12pm Monday 28th of January.

Vote to Elect a Postgrad Student to Údarás na hOllscoile on Tuesday

Polling will take place 10am-9pm on Tuesday 29th of January on the Concourse to elect a postgrad student to Údarás na hOllscoile, the University’s governing authority which is responsible for managing and controlling all of the affairs of the University. Only postgrads can vote in this election – bring NUIG ID.

Free Screening “On Her Shoulders”

Psychology Research Study: The influence of support and control on the relationship between sense of self and trauma in first time mothers.

All first time mothers aged over 18 years of age whose baby is between 1 and 13 months are invited to take part in this study which hopes to develop our understanding of how the childbirth experience impacts on maternal sense of identity and postpartum trauma. The research has ethical approval from the NUIG Research Ethics Committee. Participation in the study involves completing a 25 minute online questionnaire: https://bit.do/Yourchildbirthexperience

The Academic Writing Centre offers free one-on-one tutorials on essay writing for NUIG students. The AWC helps students to overcome recurrent problems with grammar, punctuation, spelling, and essay structure.

  1. Mindfulness for beginners class 8.10am-8.50am Tues 9th Oct in AC201 on the concourse. There are many proven benefits of applying mindfulness to our lifestyles – across learning, work, life and life, and this free class will help you to bring mindfulness into your everyday life.
  2. Mindfulness Shared Practice 1.10pm-1.50pm Weds 10th Oct in AC202 on the concourse. All are welcome to this mindfulness shared practice which is suitable for people with no previous knowledge of mindfulness as well as those who have been practising for many years. Mindfulness shared practice is also available in Letterkenny, Shannon and Sligo throughout the week.
