Free Mind Mapping Workshop

To tackle the problem of exam disappointment and failure or even just to improve your study techniques, we are holding a Mind Mapping workshop by Dr Dermot Burns from the Department of English on the 26th of February in AC2016 from 6pm-8pm. Mind Mapping is a useful technique that helps you learn more effectively, improves the way that you record information, and supports and enhances creative problem solving.

By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject. You can see the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes. More than this, Mind Maps help you remember information, as they hold it in a format that your mind finds easy to recall and quick to review.

Places are limited so call in to the SU to sign up or email su.education@nuigalway.ie

A national Student Survey is being carried out in all Irish universities, IoTs and Colleges of Education in February and March. The aim of the survey is to help enhance the quality of education Irish students receive by asking them in detail about their experiences. It is the only national student survey in Ireland, and it is important for the University to make sure our students’ views are well represented.

What you need to know

  • The survey is available at www.studentsurvey.ie
  • The survey will run in NUI Galway between Monday, 24 February and Sunday 16 March
  • It is open to first year, final year and Postgraduate taught students only
  • The survey comprises 100 questions and takes 15 minutes to complete
  • For every completed survey, €1 will be donated to the NUI Galway Financial Aid Fund for students.

There are several Student Talks conferences to be held over the coming months around Ireland and the UK.

The conference is one hour long. Seven student presenters will each give an eight minute presentation on their chosen subject. The presentation must in some way be related to your academic work. The Student Talks conference is open to undergraduate and postgraduate students.

Aside from the fact that presenting at a Student Talks conference is a great experience, an opportunity to present your work the world wide community and improve your CV, academic/ career profile, the Student Talks Awards take place at the end of each year. The winners from each academic category will be announced and the overall Student Talks best presentation will be awarded.

Rail Girls Galway Needs Volunteers

Rails Girls is a worldwide movement aimed at giving a first approach to Web application development. It prioritizes female participants to address the IT gender gap by creating a sense of community between females who usually can hardly find similar peers helping and inspiring them, in the male-dominated IT area. This is achieved by local 2-days workshops in which attendees implement a simple application using Ruby on Rails. After Rails Girls Galway 2013 run successfully (mainly sponsored by NUIG, it received more than 100 requests for participation) a second edition (dates to be defined) has been asked for, ever since. We are currently recruiting volunteer coaches (of any gender) for Rails Girls Galway 2014. Please email railsgirlsgalway@gmail.com if interested more at https://railsgirls.com/galway
