UPDATE: Regarding Exam Results and Fee Deadline

We have been made aware that many students are still waiting on their provisional semester 1 exam results and that this is causing a lot of concern as the deadline for the payment of the remainder of fees is today Thursday 31st of January. We have been working with the various departments in the University this week to try to get provisional exam results issued ASAP as we know this might impact on students decision to continue their course.

We have been advised that the Fees Office do not hold Semester 1 exam results for students with outstanding fees.

Students are advised to check Blackboard for information about provisional result release dates in the first instance or contact your College/School Office.

SU Free Cloakroom Open TODAY

The SU Free Cloakroom is open 9am-6pm Thursdays and Fridays during term. It’s located near the SU XL Shop.

Student Leap Cards

Remember you can now purchase and top up your Student Leap Cards in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. You can top up your Leap Card with us for monetary amounts or put your weekly/monthly bus ticket on it.

To get your Leap Card:

  1. Apply online here: https://www.studentleapcard.ie/apply-by-mobile/
  2. Bring your code to the SU Office and we will issue your card for €10. Please note the code is only valid for 7 days.

Volunteers URGENTLY Needed

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our annual charity collection day in Galway City this Saturday 2nd of February for the following time slots: 1pm-3pm or 3pm-5pm. You will be holding a collection bucket and asking the public to donate what they can to the SU Nominated Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and COPE Galway. 1916 Bursary Fund Open

NUIG Postgrad Open Day on Wednesday

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place 12pm-3pm Wednesday, 6th February in the Bailey Allen Hall. The event will include short presentations covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research. This is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, and other student support services. Free safeTALK Course

Online Registration Open for free safeTALK Course 9.30am-1pm Weds 27th Feb in Westside Resource Centre. safeTALK is a half-day alertness training that prepares attendees, regardless of prior experience or training, to become a suicide-alert helper. Most people with thoughts of suicide don’t truly want to die, but are struggling with the pain in their lives. Through their words and actions, they invite help to stay alive. safeTALK-trained helpers can recognise these invitations and take action by connecting them with life-saving intervention resources. safeTALK-trained helpers are an important part of suicide-safer communities, working alongside intervention resources to identify and avert suicide risks.

SpunOut.ie are recruiting for their Action Panels

Action Panels are where young people meet and decide new content ideas for SpunOut.ie. This ensures that the information on www.spunout.ie is based on what young people aged 16-25 across the country want to know about. Action Panels are based in Dublin, Waterford, Cork and Galway and they each meet three times a year. As an Action panel member there are a number of training opportunities such as on how to be an effective advocate for causes you care about, as well as receiving personal and professional guidance.

This workshop will take participants through a lively, engaged process looking at how racism functions, where it came from and what we can do to build a more equal society, locally and globally. Previous participants have described the workshop as “thought provoking” “a total eye-opener” and “inspiring”. David O’Doherty Tickets on Sale Now!

€5 tickets for our charity David O’Doherty gig on Monday 28th of January are on sale from the SU Office now. All proceeds go to the SU Charities Galway Rape Crisis Centre and COPE Galway. €5 tickets are also on sale for Neil Delamere on Monday 18th of February. Tickets will also be on sale from the SU Engineering desk from 11am this Monday.

 

Working & Travelling Abroad Fair

The NUI Galway Working and Travelling Abroad Fair 2019 will help you to plan the best summer ever! The Fair will take place 12pm-3pm on Wednesday 23rd January in Áras na Mac Léinn. Exhibitors include: J1 Visa companies, travel companies, volunteering/adventure companies, internships/training companies and there will be delicious food stalls to fill your belly as you plan your summer!

Postgraduate Election – Nominations Open

Nominations are open for the Election of a Postgraduate Student as a member of Údarás na hOllscoile for the period February 1, 2019 – January 31, 2020. Nominations must be received in writing (or by email to Runai@nuigalway.ie) by the Returning Officer (Gearóid Ó Conluain, Room A131, Quadrangle) by 12pm on Wednesday 23rd January 2019. Údarás na hOllscoile, the University’s governing authority, is responsible for managing and controlling all of the affairs of the University.

The Examinations Office releases official examination results only and is not involved in the release of any provisional results. Provisional results may be released locally by Schools/Colleges via Blackboard Grade Centre. Students are advised to check Blackboard for information about provisional result release dates in the first instance or contact your College/School Office

Mikkeller Running Club

Mikkeller Running Club is a new FREE Galway social running club that meets at 12.30pm on the 2nd Sunday of every month for a relaxed jog/run from the Salthouse along the Prom in Salthill. You can choose to do 5, 8 or 10kms at an easy pace whilst chatting to new friends. The run ends at the Salthouse where you get a free beer to reward your efforts! All welcome this Sunday 13th of January.

#HackAccessSligo Registration is Open

IT Sligo will be hosting #HackAccessSligo Friday 15th and Saturday 16th Feburary. The aim of the event is to find innovative solutions to accessibility challenges by creating a more diverse, open and engaging environment for everyone who lives in the North West.The event will run from 5 pm Friday evening to Saturday evening where participants will be presented with challenges that exclude people with disabilities from society, which they will attempt to ‘hack’. There will be mentors on hand to support the teams and each team will present their idea to a panel on the final day. Winners will be awarded a cash prize. First Cut! Youth Film Festival Deadline Mon 14th Jan

Are you a filmmaker? Are you aged between 12-24 years? Do you have a short film you want to share? Then First Cut! wants to hear from you! Whether you are an individual filmmaker or part of a school, college or youth group, visit firstcutfilmfestival.com to find out how to submit your film free of charge. Every type of film is welcome, including fiction, documentary, animation and music video. The festival runs Wednesday 6th – Saturday 9th March 2019. Road Safety Authority Interactive Shuttle + Roll-Over Simulator 11am-3pm TODAY Áras na Mac Léinn

#NUIGSU18 Elections Nominations Open TODAY!

Nominations for the 3 full-time paid officer positions of President, Vice-President/Education Officer and Vice-President/Welfare and Equality Officer will open at 10am TODAY Thursday 22nd of February 2018. Nominations close at 5pm on Wednesday 28th of February at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office. The Election will take place 10am-8pm on Thursday the 8th of March 2018.

The part-time officer positions of – Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality Officer, Societies’ Chairperson, Postgraduate Officer, Clubs’ Captain, 5 College Convenors and Mature Students’ Officer – will all be elected on Thursday 12th of April 2018. Nominations for these positions will open at 10am on Thursday the 21st of March 2018 and will close at 5pm on Wednesday 28th of March.

The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm in on Monday 5th of March 2018. Nominations for this position are now open and will close at 5pm on Monday 26th of February. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.

SU Council Chair Nominations are Open #NUIGSU18

Nomination forms are available from the SU Office and the SU Website. Nominations close at 5pm on Monday 26th of February at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office.

The Election will take place at the SU Council Meeting on Monday 5th of March at 6pm in AM250 Arts Millennium Building.

PLEASE NOTE: only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.

 

How many steps a day do you do? Could you handle 10,000?

The Marchathon 10,000 Step Challenge is happening from Monday 26th February to Friday 23rd March. Students and staff from colleges throughout the country will get out walking in this fun event to win prizes, get fitter and use their feet as a sustainable form of transport. NUIG’s Cancer Society is holding their 4th annual Relay for Life 6pm-6am on Thursday 15th March. There will be various events on the night such as the survivors lap, competitions to win amazing prizes, themed laps, movie screenings, candle of hope ceremony, plenty of food, a variety of different performances and all while raising vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society. The University are looking for students to take part in Focus Groups looking at your thoughts and opinions on NUI Galway “the brand”.

Galway Sports Partnership FREE Activity Leader Award Course this Friday & Saturday

Normally this course is €45 per person but NUI Galway students can attend for FREE. The course is targeted a people who are looking at delivering activities (sporting/games) to groups and it would suit anyone aiming to help out at summer camps, youth groups etc. The course takes place this Friday 6:30pm – 9:30pm and Saturday 9am – 4pm in the Connacht hotel. We are currently conducting an online survey of the levels of obesity stigma within the student population at NUI Galway. The results will be used to test the effectiveness of various interventions to address obesity stigma.

Applications open for “My Thesis in 3 minutes… in French!” Contest 

If you are a PhD student and you speak French, take part to this very special competition in Dublin on 14th March in Trinity College Dublin. You will have 3 minutes to present your research to a non-specialist audience. Registration is open until Tuesday the 27th February. This contest is open to all disciplines and all nationalities, with great prizes to win!

2018 Chinese Lantern Festival

To celebrate the Chinese New Year of Dog, NUI Galway China Society will hold a Lantern Festival Party in the Hub from 1pm on Sunday 4th of March. We will show some Chinese traditional culture, such as Chinese writing, painting and we will teach you how to cook the delicious Chinese dumplings. All students welcome!
