Following his sold out semester 1 gig we are delighted to announce that hilarious hypnotist Michael McCoy is back at 8pm on Monday 12th February in the O’Flaherty Theatre.

Voting takes place today Thursday 21st of January from 11am-11pm by email vote to elect the NUIG Alumni member of Údarás na hOllscoile NUI Galway.

This event is open to everyone who wishes to #MakeASmartVote in the upcoming General Elections. The hustings will be hosted by the USI at 7pm Tuesday 26th January in the D’Arcy Thompson Theatre, NUI Galway.
Each political party has been invited to send a representative to represent their party’s views on the defining issues facing students.Students and youth organisations will be able to submit questions in advance or via social media on #MakeASmartVote and candidates will be announced as they are confirmed!

Exam Results
Semester 1 Exam Results will remain “provisional” until exam boards meet at the end of semester 2. The Examinations Office does not release provisional results. 
Provisional results for Semester 1 exams may be available to students via Blackboard. Please note that not all students will receive provisional results for Semester 1 exams. If provisional results are not available to you via Blackboard by the first week in February, please consult with your lecturer for advice. Undergraduate Results: Official results for Semester 1 and Semester 2 will be released between Tuesday, 14th and Friday 24th June by the Exams Office

Postgraduate Results: Official 1st Sitting results will be released on Friday 1st July.

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb takes place on Saturday 27th of February in conjunction with NUI Galway Mountaineering Club. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €40 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society. SU Charity Aquathon – Sign up and get training now! 

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 23rd of February. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan. 

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €25 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and The Irish Cancer Society. You can sign up by emailing studentsunion@nuigalway.ie Entry includes free t-shirt and food for all participants.

NUI Galway Shave or Dye will take place on Tuesday 16th of February and we need volunteers to donate their heads to be shaved or dyed on the day. We also need volunteers to help out with the promotion and running of the event. All funds raised on the day will go to the Irish Cancer Society.

There is a global awareness of the mental and physical health benefits in early morning dancing. Events are being held all over the world where people get up early and dance before work and its becoming an extremely popular and common event in big cities. Dancing is a way to exercise, connect to your deepest self, to feel free, to let go of pent up energy and one of the best ways to start a day. We are organising this morning session for those of you who would like to “dance your way into the day” full of health and vitality. It is obviously a sober event and there will be yoga, massage, healthy snacks and drinks and all kinds of wonderful things there. The event starts at 6:30am – 10am. Costs are €3 for students and €10 for others. Includes DJ Will Softly, herbal teas/healthy snacks from The Secret Garden Café and free Yoga with Paul Hardiman at 7am and 8:30am – one energetic class and one deep slow stretchy class

Nominations close 12pm TOMORROW for election of a Postgrad Student to Údarás na hOllscoile NUI Galway

Nomination are to be received in writing ( Gearóid Ó Conluain in Room A131, Quadrangle) by 12.00 noon on Friday, January 22, 2016. Each nomination must be on a Nomination Paper signed by two postgraduate students and also signed by the candidate. The names of the candidates will be notified to voters as soon as possible thereafter.

Election Procedure: The election will be conducted by ballot, if necessary, of the postgraduate students on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 in the Concourse from 10.00 to 21.00.

Volunteers Needed for SU Charity Collection Day

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 6th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & The Irish Cancer Society. The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place on Wednesday, 3rd February in Áras na Mac Léinn 12pm-4pm. Pat Kenny Show 8th Amendment Debate this Friday

NUI Galway’s Literary and Debating Society will debate the 8th Amendment live on Newstalk radio’s Pat Kenny Show this Friday, 22nd January from 10.30am to 12.30pm from the Radisson Hotel, Galway. The Pat Kenny Show would like to invite NUI Galway students to come along and be part of a live audience during and after the debate.

Student participants needed for mindfulness study

You are invited to take part in a research study which involves evaluating the effects of a 6-week mindfulness meditation intervention on cognitive ability. Participants will spend 6-weeks learning about the concept and practice of mindfulness using Headspace, an app which runs on all major smartphones, tablets and web browsers and will be in with a chance to win a €100 voucher

Voter Registration & Repealing the 8th Amendment

Students following a full time course of at least one year’s duration leading to an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification can apply to the fund.

The Official NUIG Movember Opening Party takes place at 7pm on Wednesday 28th of October in the College Bar. Please note that the new smoking shelter is now in place between the Arts Millennium Building and the Bialann. Smoking isn’t permitted at University building entrances.

NUI Galway Smart Consent Launch and Documentary Film Night, “The Hunting Ground”. 

Come along to the Aula Maxima Quadrangle Tuesday the 3rd of November at 6pm for the Launch of the Smart Consent Campaign and screening of the award winning documentary, “The Hunting Ground”.  The film highlights how students were activated to get justice for their cause, took their case and won! NUI Galway is proud to be addressing sexual assault research findings that indicate that 25 % have experienced sexual assault through the launch of Smart Consent. Through the Film NUI Galway seeks to demonstrate that justice will be found here and work towards a safe campus.  NUI Galway truly care about students safety, health and wellbeing. It will be accompanied with a Panel of NUI Galway people and Community Organisations (HSE, Garda, etc.) to share with students and staff that there is a Policy and every effort will be made to be there for students. Bank Holiday Monday Arrangements

The SU Office, the Library, the SU Cloakroom, the College Bar, Café na Gaeilge, The Hub and the SU Engineering Desk will all be closed on Monday 26th October for the Bank Holiday

The SU Shop will be open on Saturday 10am-5pm. It will be closed on Sunday & Monday and re-open on Tuesday as normal.

Smokey’s & The Wall Café will be open 9am-5.30pm on Saturday, Sunday & Monday.

Student Travelcards Update

Our Student Travelcard  Machine is finally working again so we can take your photo and print off your travelcard straight away in the SU Office for €15 Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. We are also able to issue ISIC Cards for €15 which work worldwide as student identification.

SU Charity Aquathon – Win tickets to the Sea Sessions!

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 25th of February 2014. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan. 

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €25 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. We now have an extra incentive to get you involved as the Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival have kindly given us a pair of tickets for the participant who raises the most money for charity! You can sign up in the Students’ Union office and the Sports Centre now and collect your Sponsorship Card. You can also fundraise online via our iDonate page here. Entry includes free t-shirt and food for all participants. We also have a 5 week training plan to get you ready on our website here.

Seminar  ‘What drives attitudes about organ donation?

Friday 31st January at 8:00 pm sharp in Martin Ryan Annex Theatre 201. Suas Global Issues’ Course – Early Bird Rate now enrolling

The Global Issues’ Course is a seven week evening course which gives students an introduction to development issues in a critical, challenging, engaging and interactive way. This course is designed from a global justice perspective and provides a range of viewpoints on each of the key issues explored. Topics covered include an introduction to development, education, global health, trade and livelihoods, environmental sustainability and debt justice. The course will address each issue by looking at both the symptoms and the causes, as well as possible alternatives. The final session of the course will look at ‘what next’? and supports participants in finding a role for themselves to get involved and take action for positive change. On successful completion of the course all participants will receive a certificate.

The course will run for 7 weeks starting Tuesday 11 February from 6.30-8.30pm.

The AWC Annual Writing Competition is now live
All undergraduate students are eligible to compete. Essays must be on one of the three topics, can be no longer than 500 words, and must include citations from one or two published sources. The deadline is 21 February 2014. The winner will receive an Apple I-Pad 2; the essay will be published in Sin .Topics, guidelines, and FAQ can be found here.

1st year Engineers – CÉIM Sessions

The Students’ Union, as part of its mandate to be a pro-choice Union, have teamed up with Choice Soc to have an informative workshop on everything you need to know about pro-choice and why we have a pro-choice Union. At 8pm on Monday 10th of February comedy hypnotist Michael McCoy will be back in NUI Galway doing his SeX Rated show as part of SHAG Week. ECDL Opportunity

The Computer and IT Office of the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies is an accredited ECDL test centre. The ECDL establishes a measurable standard for everyone who uses a computer in either a professional or personal capacity. It is a certificate that verifies competence in computer use, and is an internationally recognised certificate.

ECDL online, interactive courseware can be used by all NUIG students via your Blackboard login. Please click here. for instructions on accessing the ECDL Core, and ECDL Advanced, self-study course.

We offer students the opportunity to gain the ECDL qualification at a nominal cost. Students use on-line training facilities to study modules in their own time. Exams are carried out (also on-line) in our Training Centre in AM102.

You are free to use the training material simply as a learning resource. There is a charge ONLY if you wish to register as an ECDL candidate, complete the exams, and gain the ECDL (Core or Advanced) certificate. Contact ecdl@nuigalway.ie for further information.

GiGSoc Rainbow Ball

Enter McKinsey Venture Academy before February 14th
McKinsey Venture Academy is a social enterprise competition for university students based in the UK and Ireland. It is sponsored by McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm. The competition involves teams of students putting together a pitch for a social enterprise for €6,000 of seed funding and support from McKinsey mentors. The aim of the competition is to help students to tap into their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, enabling them to transform their seedling ideas into social enterprises that make a difference. 
The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate university students based in the UK or Ireland, regardless of the subject they study. We are looking for groups of 2-8 creative and enthusiastic individuals with a great idea and a desire to create change. You can enter with a social enterprise at any stage of development: from a brand new idea to a business that is already running that you are trying to grow. In last year’s competition, the vast majority of entries (and our winner) were very early stage ideas. Enter with a short summary of the enterprise before February 14th. Pass On Your Skills! 
Click and Connect are seeking volunteers for their programme. The programme provides basic introduction to computer classes to those with little knowledge or confidence in using technology. The course covers topics such as using the internet, email and digital photography. Classes are 2 hours per week for 4 weeks here at NUI Galway from 27th January. 
If you can volunteer your time to help someone else make sense of technology please contact pat.byrne@nuigalway.ie ASAP. Complete two sets of 4 classes to earn your Alive Volunteering Cert.
