NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb 2016

On Saturday 5th March the NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb will be taking place in association with NUI Galway Mountaineering Club.

The event will be raising money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & the Irish Cancer Society the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2015/16. Croagh Patrick is situated near the town of Westport, Co. Mayo and rises to a height of 762m above sea level.

To take part you need to fill out a registration form and return same to the Students’ Union Office. We will then give you a sponsorship card.

Participants need to raise a minimum of €40 to take part in the event and this will include return bus and a free t-shirt.

All funds raised must be returned to the Students’ Union office by 5pm on Wednesday 2nd of March.

WHAT YOU NEED TO BRING

Before you can board the bus you must have all of the following items:

Walking boots (with ankle support!) PLEASE NOTE: Runners, hiking shoes, shoes and Doc Martens are not permitted as they provide no grip or ankle support.

Trousers (not Jeans)

Rucksack/Bag Waterproofs (no Ponchos)

Hats and Gloves

Food and Drink (at least 1.5 litres of drinking water/fluids)

Spare Clothing and Shoes

Voting takes place today Thursday 21st of January from 11am-11pm by email vote to elect the NUIG Alumni member of Údarás na hOllscoile NUI Galway.

All NUI Galway Alumni who have registered with the Alumni Office should receive an email from the Alumni office this morning with a link to vote.

This event is open to everyone who wishes to #MakeASmartVote in the upcoming General Elections. The hustings will be hosted by the USI at 7pm Tuesday 26th January in the D’Arcy Thompson Theatre, NUI Galway.
Each political party has been invited to send a representative to represent their party’s views on the defining issues facing students.Students and youth organisations will be able to submit questions in advance or via social media on #MakeASmartVote and candidates will be announced as they are confirmed!

Exam Results
Semester 1 Exam Results will remain “provisional” until exam boards meet at the end of semester 2. The Examinations Office does not release provisional results. 
Provisional results for Semester 1 exams may be available to students via Blackboard. Please note that not all students will receive provisional results for Semester 1 exams. If provisional results are not available to you via Blackboard by the first week in February, please consult with your lecturer for advice. Undergraduate Results: Official results for Semester 1 and Semester 2 will be released between Tuesday, 14th and Friday 24th June by the Exams Office

Postgraduate Results: Official 1st Sitting results will be released on Friday 1st July.

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 23rd of February. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan.

NUI Galway we need your heads! (Again!)

NUI Galway Shave or Dye will take place on Tuesday 16th of February and we need volunteers to donate their heads to be shaved or dyed on the day. We also need volunteers to help out with the promotion and running of the event. All funds raised on the day will go to the Irish Cancer Society.

There is a global awareness of the mental and physical health benefits in early morning dancing. Events are being held all over the world where people get up early and dance before work and its becoming an extremely popular and common event in big cities. Dancing is a way to exercise, connect to your deepest self, to feel free, to let go of pent up energy and one of the best ways to start a day. We are organising this morning session for those of you who would like to “dance your way into the day” full of health and vitality. It is obviously a sober event and there will be yoga, massage, healthy snacks and drinks and all kinds of wonderful things there. The event starts at 6:30am – 10am. Costs are €3 for students and €10 for others. Includes DJ Will Softly, herbal teas/healthy snacks from The Secret Garden Café and free Yoga with Paul Hardiman at 7am and 8:30am – one energetic class and one deep slow stretchy class

Nominations close 12pm TOMORROW for election of a Postgrad Student to Údarás na hOllscoile NUI Galway

Nomination are to be received in writing ( Gearóid Ó Conluain in Room A131, Quadrangle) by 12.00 noon on Friday, January 22, 2016. Each nomination must be on a Nomination Paper signed by two postgraduate students and also signed by the candidate. The names of the candidates will be notified to voters as soon as possible thereafter.

Election Procedure: The election will be conducted by ballot, if necessary, of the postgraduate students on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 in the Concourse from 10.00 to 21.00.

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place on Wednesday, 3rd February in Áras na Mac Léinn 12pm-4pm. There will be over 80 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services.

Student participants needed for mindfulness study

You are invited to take part in a research study which involves evaluating the effects of a 6-week mindfulness meditation intervention on cognitive ability. Participants will spend 6-weeks learning about the concept and practice of mindfulness using Headspace, an app which runs on all major smartphones, tablets and web browsers and will be in with a chance to win a €100 voucher

Advisory Session for applicants to the IRC Postgraduate Scholarship Schemes

CampusCreate, a space and practice, aims to encourage creative thinking across the NUI Galway campus in a fun and playful way. It’s a place for you to flex your creative muscles, and undertake weekly inspiring challenges, and to share these across the campus community. During the 12 weeks of semester two, ‘Creative Challenges’ will be posted via TwitterFacebook, and websiteEach week has a different theme and ‘Daily Prompts’ will support the challenge. ASIST Course now enrolling

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two day skills building workshop in suicide first-aid. Ireland ranks 5th in the EU for rates of suicide with almost 500 people dying by suicide every year. Suicide first aid helps meet some of the challenges in reducing suicidal behaviour. It could help save a life. ASIST trains participants to reduce the immediate risk of a suicide and increase the support for a person at risk. It helps them seek a shared understanding of reasons for suicide and reasons for living.

The 2 day course will take place 9am-5pm Thursday 11th and Friday 12th February in Áras na Mac Léinn and you must attend both days.

The course is free but there is a €10 deposit required to reserve your place. Spaces are limited – sign up now in the Students’ Union Office Monday-Friday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm.

Student Travelcards & ISIC Cards Expiring 31st December 2015

Please check the expiration date on your Student Travelcard/ISIC Card – if it expires on 31st December 2015 make sure you call in to us before the Christmas break to renew it if you want cheap travel over the holidays! The Students’ Union office will close on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen at 10am on Thursday 7th January.

We take your photo and print the card off straight away for just €15.

NUI Galway Christmas Holiday Arrangements 2015

The Students’ Union office will close on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen at 10am on Thursday 7th January.

The Library will be closed Thursday 24th December to Sunday 3rd January (inclusive)

The Student Health Unit will close on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen on Wednesday 6th January.

The SU Cloakroom will close at 6.30pm on Friday 18th December and will reopen at 9am on Monday 11th January

The SU Engineering Desk will close at 3pm on Friday 11th December and will reopen at 11am on Monday 11th January

The College Bar will close at 3pm on Monday 21st December and will reopen on Monday 11th January.

The Hub is closed and will reopen on Monday 11th January.

Caife Na Gaeilge will close at 3pm on Friday 18th December and will reopen on Monday 11th January.

The SU Shop will close at 5pm on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen on Monday 4th January (reduced hours for first week back 8am-5pm)

Volunteers Needed for SU Charity Cake Sale

We are looking for baking and non-baking volunteers to help out with our Big Fat Charity Cake Sale on Wednesday 2nd December. Exam Buses

We have partnered with City Direct Bus Company to provide buses to the two exam venues in Salthill at Leisureland and the Galway Bay Hotel. This service will run twice a day during the exams and costs €2 per journey. Buses will leave University Road at 08:40 & 15:40 for Salthill. Buses will leave Leisureland in Salthill at 11:40 & 18:40 to return to University Road via Eyre Square.

Student Leap Card Vouchers Expire this Monday 30th November

Just a reminder that if you have a voucher from AIB for the Student Leap Card that you need to bring it in to us before Monday the 30th of November to get your travelcard for €3. We are open 10am-5pm Monday-Friday and we will take your photo and print the card off straight away. If you don’t have one of the vouchers the Student Leap Card costs €15 and they expire 31st December 2016.

Volunteers needed for Mini Med School

Are you a healthcare student? Or a science student? Would you like to help inspire the next generation of students at NUIG? If so, then you will be an ideal volunteer for the upcoming Mini Med School that will be held on campus in January/February 2016. We are looking for anyone interested in planning the event. Mini Med School 2016 is an EXPLORE project in collaboration with the NUIG Cancer Society. The aim is to hold 4 workshop evenings for secondary school students – where they can come face to face with current students and get a feel for what it would be like to study here! We are aiming to inspire and introduce them into the healthcare or research sector, in a fun and stimulating way. We are holding a massive Christmas Day fundraiser in the College Bar with BizSoc TODAY to raise money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society. There will be traditional Christmas carols, cheesy Christmas tunes with DJ Byrno, a full turkey dinner and a whole lot of other Festive merriment! Get your tinsel, mistletoe and jumper ready now! 
The official after party will be held in Electric Garden & Theatre and Four/Four TONIGHT to continue the Yuletide vibes. €5 wristbands for the after party are on sale in the SU Office now and all proceeds go to Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society.

Simon Cumbers Media Fund Student Scheme 2016

Applications are now being accepted for the Simon Cumbers Media Fund Student Scheme 2016. The Scheme invites students across Ireland to apply to research and report on a particular issue in developing countries. It awards students with funding to travel to these countries to produce media projects focusing on development issues. NUI Galway Students’ Union Christmas Day comes early again this year!

We are holding a massive Christmas Day fundraiser in the College Bar on Thursday 19th of November to raise money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society. There will be traditional Christmas carols, cheesy Christmas tunes with DJ Byrno and lots of prizes for the best/worst Christmas jumpers along with a whole lot of other Festive merriment! Get your tinsel, mistletoe and jumper ready now! 

Santa also needs some helper volunteers to assist with the fundraising on the day so if you have an hour or two to spare between 9am and 3pm on Thursday 19th November email studentsunion@nuigalway.ie to sign up and you will definitely be on Santa’s nice list this year.

6pm NUIG’s #safecampus discussion on how to make NUIG a safer campus specifically focusing on sexual health and support in The Hub Wellness Room.

1pm – 3pm Ban the R Word Campaign in Smokey’s Café with Best Buddies Society. This campaign is trying to raise awareness on how certain words can hurt and isolate people with an intellectual disability.

NUIG Postgrad Open Day Weds 11th Nov

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place on Wednesday, 11th November 2015 in the Bailey Allen Hall (Student Centre/Áras na Mac Leinn).

The event will run from 12pm-4pm, with short presentations taking place during the day also, covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research.

There will be over 80 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services. We are planning a load of fundraising events throughout the year but need your help! Our reception desk in the Engineering Building foyer is open Monday – Friday 11am-3pm.
