Be Aware: Student Houses Targeted by Burglars.

There has recently been a number of reported burglaries to students’ houses near NUI Galway. If you come home to find that your house has been robbed, do not enter the property. Call to a neighbour’s house and ring 999/112. Explain what has happened and wait for the Gardaí to arrive. We urge you to protect your property as much as possible.

When you are not at home:

  • Lock the front and back doors
  • Close all windows
  • Leave some lights on in the house, upstairs and downstairs
  • If possible, lock all bedroom doors
  • Do not leave cash in the property
  • Do not leave bikes unlocked outside the property
  • And very importantly, if you have a house alarm – USE IT.

Also, it is advised by the Gardaí to take note of all serial numbers on laptops and other valuable devices. Save your important files and college work on an additional device, and take photos of the valuable items you own (including bikes).Following the above will make your home less of a target.

You can speak to your Students’ Union Welfare Officer, Jimmy McGovern for more information su.welfare@nuigalway.ie

College Campus Radio FlirtFM Turns 20 – Join the party 25th-26th September

Uncategorized

College Campus Radio FlirtFM turns 20 with a series of special events running 25th-26th September 2015.

Monday 28th September 2015 is officially Flirt FM’s birthday, so we want to throw her a big party the preceding weekend. Celebrations will include a Silent Disco, a three course dinner and a live radio show.

Kicking off the party on the 25th of September with a meeting up in the NUI Galway College Bar at 7pm. Celebrations will continue in the Roisín Dubh with a silent disco like no other. The event is being held at and will see former station managers, Fiona McNulty and Keith Wallace, in a DJ battle with current staff, Paula Healy and Alan Meaney. Each team will be bringing you hits from different decades throughout FlirtFM’s lifespan. Expect some forgotten gems and classics, get your headphones and start dancing.

On Saturday the 26th of September proceedings will get underway with registration in Áras na Mac Léinn in NUI Galway at 12 midday. A free lunch will be served from 12:30 onwards.

From 1pm onwards there will be a live radio show on Flirt FM 101.3 where presenter Paddy Duffy will chat to current and ex volunteers and staff about their time at the station. Each person will share their memories, pick a song that represents their time on air and there will be a couple of live bands in studio. Clips of old shows through the years will also be included.

At the same time, attendees during Saturday afternoon will be able to avail of workshops where former Flirt FM presenters will be talking about what the station meant to them in their career paths when moving onto other media outlets.

It’s not all about adults though! If you are bringing the little ones along, they can enjoy face painting, games and some craft activities at the Hub from 1:30 onwards.

A documentary on the history of the station will be aired at 5 in the evening on Saturday including contributions from past staff and volunteers.  Wine and nibbles will be served.

And that’s not all folks! From 7.30 a three course dinner at The Salthill Hotel will give attendees a chance to chat to that person you did a breakfast show with back in 2004, have some lovely food and later dance the night away. This is a ticketed event and tickets can be purchased from Eventbrite.

Flirt FM 101.3 is Galway City’s award winning Student, Community & Alternative Station, based in NUI Galway since September 1995. With two paid staff, the station is home to up to 150 volunteers annually. We’re on FM 24hrs weekdays during term-time, and from afternoon to late night during college holidays.

Study on Facebook and Narcissim

We at National University of Ireland Galway are conducting a study on narcissism and how it correlates with various Facebook activities of users. For this purpose we have developed a Facebook app that requests your data while asking you to complete a narcissism survey which will not take much of your time (only about 5-10 minutes). At the end a narcissism score will be generated based on which you can assess whether or not you are a narcissist.

Here is the link for the app: https://unhp.com.pk/experiments/my_app/ you have to click Okay for Facebook authorization (or login with your Facebook account if you are not logged in). This will then take you to survey and you can fill it according to given instructions.

Please note there is a €50 cash prize for one lucky draw winner of all the participants who will complete this study.
