1,250 New NUI Galway Students Added to Electoral Register
A Voter Registration Drive by NUI Galway Students’ Union has resulted in over 1,250 students being added to the register of electors. The campaign sought to target first year students during orientation events to get them signed up to vote.
The campaign was spearheaded by the Students’ Union Vice-President/Welfare Officer, Megan Reilly and the Vice-President/Education Officer Andrew Forde. They were assisted by volunteers including Alex Coughlan and Patricia O’Mahony in particular, who both worked tirelessly across campus to register students.
NUI Galway Students’ Union President Lorcán Ó Maoileannaigh said: “We are delighted to have registered so many students to vote thus far and we plan on registering many more throughout the year. With a referendum on the horizon and a possible general election soon, it is crucial that the student voice is heard. We want to encourage students to be active participants at all levels of society, and we know how important the student vote is, as was seen in the Marriage Equality referendum.”
