Course Content:

This one day refresher course will cover:

$1·         First Aid in the Workplace

$1·         Cardiac First Response

$1·         Patient Assessment

$1·         Respiratory Emergencies

$1·         Wounds & Bleeding

$1·         Altered Levels of Consciousness

$1·         Musculoskeletal Injuries

$1·         Burns, Scalds, Chemicals, Electric Shock

Assessment & Certification: There is no examination at the end of the day, the tutor will be observing the practical’s throughout the day and assisting anyone with any difficulties. The Certificate for Refreshers last for two years, the certificate come from the Emergency Services Training Institure and is added to the FETAC award to confirm continuing certification. You don’t receive another FETAC certificate. 

Cost: €80 (Usual cost €100)

Barista Course

Barista Course 

Description: This course is divided into a practical and a theoretical section. Students must attend both.

Part A: Espresso Coffee Preparation Basics, (Practical).

Course objectives: To cover the basic techniques of Espresso Coffee Preparation using a traditional espresso machine and coffee grinder. Covering Safe operation of the equipment, espresso extraction, milk preparation using steam, espresso coffee recipes, grinder settings, espresso machine maintenance.

Course Outline: The demonstration will take approximately 75 minutes

Assessment: The attendees will be given an outline of the course and sign off that they have undertaken it, by an Instructor from The Coffee Company.

Part B: Coffee Origins and Espresso Coffee Preparation Basics, (Theoretical).

Course objectives: To cover a brief History of Coffee Culture and Coffee Bean Origins and the basic techniques of Espresso Coffee Preparation using a traditional espresso machine and coffee grinder. 

Course Outline: The talk will take approximately 75 minutes.

Assessment: The attendees will be given an outline of the course and sign off that they have undertaken it, by an Instructor from The Coffee Company.

Students per course: Max 12 students per group. Min 8 students for course to go ahead.

Course Venue: The Students’ Union Office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn

Course Cost: €10 which will be donated to the Students’ Union Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society

Manual Handling Training

  • Manual Handling Training Course – COURSE FULL 25/08/15

Course Aim:

To provide you with the information and training necessary to be competent in Manual Handling, in order to avoid injury to yourself and to others. The Course Provider is The Emergency Services Training Institute.

Course Objectives:

On completion of this course, participants will be able to:

Define Manual Handling.

State relevant Irish and EU Legislation.

Describe the basic Anatomy of the Spine.

Utilise correctly the 8 Principles of Safe Lifting.

Course Programme:

Manual Handling Legislation – as it applies to the employer 
and employee.

Dangers and harm caused by careless / unskilled methods of manual handling.

Principles of levers and laws of motion.

Anatomy of the spine and muscular system.

How to handle loads safely.

Practice in safe handling of loads.

Assessment & Certification:

To receive certification for Manual Handling all participants must successfully complete a theory quiz and a practical lifting assessment. The certification is valid for 2 years from the date of training.

Course Attendance: Maximum of 10 participants per instructor.

Cost: €30 (Usual cost €50)

Course objectives: To cover the basic fundamentals of drinks and drink service methods, including the social responsibility on all parties to serve drink in a responsible manner.

Course Date: 10am-5pm Friday 5th February 2016 COURSE FULL 19/01/16

Course Content:                

1: Responsible selling of alcohol

2: Introduction to Wines

3: Spirits appreciation and theory

4: Stouts, beers and Ciders (theory and service)

Assessment/Certification: There is no assessment. A certificate of participation will be given.

Child Protection Training

Child Protection Training 

Course Description: The content is awareness level and covers topics relevant to staff and volunteers working directly with children and young people. 

It covers policy, legislation, attitudes and values, definitions and signs of abuse, safe recruitment, code of behaviour and scenarios.

Course Audience: Staff and volunteers working directly with children and young people.

Assessment/Certification: Certification is based on attendance pf the programme and it is certified by the National Youth Council of Ireland.
