The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb takes place on Saturday 17th of February 2018 in conjunction with NUI Galway Mountaineering Club. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €40 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Domestic Violence Response & AMACH!

Election Day polling: 11am-3pm Monday 15th February in the foyer of the Engineering Building. Only students of the College of Engineering & Informatics can vote in this election. You must bring College ID to vote.
Remote Vote: If you won’t be on campus to vote on Monday 15th February you can register for a REMOTE VOTE until midnight Sunday 14th of February. You can then vote online on the SU Website 11am-3pm Monday 15th February.

Take Part in NUIG Sleep Paralysis Survey
The Sleep Paralysis (SP) study is up and running and we’d be grateful if all students could respond! The study is exploring personality and cognitive factors that may influence SP episodes, though you don’t need to have had an SP experience to take part. We’re trying to run the biggest study in this field in Ireland, so if you have half an hour or so, please fill out the survey below. An Evening with Sonia O’ Sullivan
A fun and interactive evening not to be missed with one of Ireland’s greatest athletes. A talk with Sonia will be followed with open Q&A session and photo opportunities. Sonia’s talk will preceded by expert presentations on Smart Training/Injury Prevention/ Nutrition for younger athletes. This event is being organised by Cradock Performance in conjunction with Connacht Schools Athletics Association as part of the celebrations of 100 years of Irish Schools Athletics. Tickets are €10 for adults/€5 for students and U18s. Tickets can be purchased online here.
This is a not for profit evening with all proceeds going to Connacht Schools Athletics Association and the development of grass roots athletics in Connacht.

There will be voter registration forms available from the Students’ Union until 4pm TODAY Thursday 28th January. We will be sending all forms off today to be in on time for the deadline.
All graduates of an NUI college (UCC, UCD, NUIG, MU [NUI Maynooth], RCSI, NCAD) are entitled to a postal vote, but you must be registered. If you are already registered and need to update your contact details, these can be updated using the same form.
A copy of the form can be found here https://www.nui.ie/elections/docs/GradUpdateENG.pdf should you want to print it off yourself and send it to National University of Ireland, Records Office, 49 Merrion Square, Dublin 2.
While at present it will be the February 2015 register that is used, the responsible Minister can use their discretion to use the new 2016 register. NUI Galway Students’ Union, Union of Students in Ireland (USI) and other organisations will be lobbying for this to happen. English classes for international students
English for Academic Purposes (EAP) classes will take place each Wednesday from 6pm-8pm in AM105 in the Arts Millennium building and on Mondays 5pm-7pm in AM122 in the Arts Millennium Building.
The classes will run for 8 weeks and are open to all full degree international students who wish to improve their academic writing. There is no need for registration, students should simply attend on the day that suits.

NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb 2016
On Saturday 5th March the NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb will be taking place in association with NUI Galway Mountaineering Club.
The event will be raising money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & the Irish Cancer Society the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2015/16. Croagh Patrick is situated near the town of Westport, Co. Mayo and rises to a height of 762m above sea level.
To take part you need to fill out a registration form and return same to the Students’ Union Office. We will then give you a sponsorship card.
Participants need to raise a minimum of €40 to take part in the event and this will include return bus and a free t-shirt.
All funds raised must be returned to the Students’ Union office by 5pm on Wednesday 2nd of March.

Each nomination must be on a Nomination Paper signed by two postgraduate students and also signed by the candidate. NUIG Postgrad Open Day 12pm-4pm Weds 3rd Feb
The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place on Wednesday, 3rd February in Áras na Mac Léinn 12pm-4pm. Presentations taking place during the day will cover such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research. There will be over 80 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services.

Pat Kenny Show 8th Amendment Debate this Friday
NUI Galway’s Literary and Debating Society will debate the 8th Amendment live on Newstalk radio’s Pat Kenny Show this Friday, 22nd January from 10.30am to 12.30pm from the Radisson Hotel, Galway. The Pat Kenny Show would like to invite NUI Galway students to come along and be part of a live audience during and after the debate.

Student participants needed for mindfulness study
You are invited to take part in a research study which involves evaluating the effects of a 6-week mindfulness meditation intervention on cognitive ability. Participants will spend 6-weeks learning about the concept and practice of mindfulness using Headspace, an app which runs on all major smartphones, tablets and web browsers and will be in with a chance to win a €100 voucher

Advisory Session for applicants to the IRC Postgraduate Scholarship Schemes
5pm Wednesday, 13th January in Lecture Theatre (243), Áras Moyola (Nursing Building). Dr Lucy Byrnes (Dean of Graduate Studies), together with the Research Office, will host an advisory session on preparing a successful application. This is a good opportunity for applicants to seek guidance on their application and to have any questions answered. Supervisors are also encouraged to attend.

CampusCreate, a space and practice, aims to encourage creative thinking across the NUI Galway campus in a fun and playful way. It’s a place for you to flex your creative muscles, and undertake weekly inspiring challenges, and to share these across the campus community. During the 12 weeks of semester two, ‘Creative Challenges’ will be posted via Twitter, Facebook, and website. Each week has a different theme and ‘Daily Prompts’ will support the challenge. ASIST Course now enrolling
Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two day skills building workshop in suicide first-aid. Ireland ranks 5th in the EU for rates of suicide with almost 500 people dying by suicide every year. Suicide first aid helps meet some of the challenges in reducing suicidal behaviour. It could help save a life. ASIST trains participants to reduce the immediate risk of a suicide and increase the support for a person at risk. It helps them seek a shared understanding of reasons for suicide and reasons for living.
The 2 day course will take place 9am-5pm Thursday 11th and Friday 12th February in Áras na Mac Léinn and you must attend both days.
The course is free but there is a €10 deposit required to reserve your place. Spaces are limited – sign up now in the Students’ Union Office Monday-Friday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm.

NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb 2016
On Saturday 5th March the NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb will be taking place in association with NUI Galway Mountaineering Club.
The event will be raising money for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & the Irish Cancer Society the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2015/16. Croagh Patrick is situated near the town of Westport, Co. Mayo and rises to a height of 762m above sea level.
To take part you need to fill out a registration form and return same to the Students’ Union Office. We will then give you a sponsorship card.
Participants need to raise a minimum of €40 to take part in the event and this will include return bus and a free t-shirt.
All funds raised must be returned to the Students’ Union office by 5pm on Wednesday 2nd of March.

Walking boots (with ankle support!) PLEASE NOTE: Runners, hiking shoes, shoes and Doc Martens are not permitted as they provide no grip or ankle support.
