Advisory Session for applicants to the IRC Postgraduate Scholarship Schemes

5pm Wednesday, 13th January in Lecture Theatre (243), Áras Moyola (Nursing Building). Dr Lucy Byrnes (Dean of Graduate Studies), together with the Research Office, will host an advisory session on preparing a successful application. This is a good opportunity for applicants to seek guidance on their application and to have any questions answered.  Supervisors are also encouraged to attend.


CampusCreate, a space and practice, aims to encourage creative thinking across the NUI Galway campus in a fun and playful way. It’s a place for you to flex your creative muscles, and undertake weekly inspiring challenges, and to share these across the campus community. During the 12 weeks of semester two, ‘Creative Challenges’ will be posted via TwitterFacebook, and websiteEach week has a different theme and ‘Daily Prompts’ will support the challenge. Interpret the ‘Creative Challenge’ in whatever way you like with creations of video, drawing, writing, audio, photography, mash-ups, remixes, etc. More details on our website where you can register for news & updates.

ASIST Course now enrolling

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two day skills building workshop in suicide first-aid. Ireland ranks 5th in the EU for rates of suicide with almost 500 people dying by suicide every year. Suicide first aid helps meet some of the challenges in reducing suicidal behaviour. It could help save a life. ASIST trains participants to reduce the immediate risk of a suicide and increase the support for a person at risk. It helps them seek a shared understanding of reasons for suicide and reasons for living.

The 2 day course will take place 9am-5pm Thursday 11th and Friday 12th February in Áras na Mac Léinn and you must attend both days.

The course is free but there is a €10 deposit required to reserve your place. Spaces are limited – sign up now in the Students’ Union Office Monday-Friday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm.

Registration is now open for our 10 Week Basic Sign Language courses in 2016. The course cost is €40 (usual price €75) and you can pay in the SU Office or phone 091 524810 to pay by credit card.

SU Life Skills Yoga Now Enrolling

The next SU 8 week Ashtanga yoga course is on Thursday 21st January – Thursday 10th March 2016.

Free Anxiety Management Workshops

Learn to manage stress and workload during the college term. This free 4 week group workshop aims to explore tools and techniques to help deal with stress and anxiety during your college year. What is the Students’ Union?

“The mission of the Union shall be to represent its members and promote, defend and vindicate the rights of its members at all levels of society.” – Constitution of the Students’ Union

The SU is a representative organisation that is independent from the University and consists of all registered students at NUI Galway.  As the SU is an independent body, the SU officers do not have to answer to the University authorities – we only answer to you, our members who have elected us.

The Life Skills Programme run by the Students’ Union offers a chance to further your development outside of the academic world. To book your space call up to the Students’ Union office beside the College Bar with the course fee where applicable.

Student Leap Cards & ISIC Cards

The shiny new Student Leap Cards and ISIC Cards are available now from the Students’ Union office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday. All you need to do is bring yourself, your new college ID, €15 and a smile for the photo we will take of you. These are valid until the 31st of December 2016.

SU Free Cloakroom reopens Monday 7th September

The SU Cloakroom is situated beside the SU Shop near the Bialann. The Cloakroom is FREE and is open Monday to Friday 9am – 6.30pm. Please note that we cannot accept laptops and items must be removed at the end of each day.

Class Representatives

Every class is entitled to a Class Representative to represent their class. If your class does not have a Class Rep your voice will not be heard. If you have any questions on the roles and responsibilities of a Class Rep contact the SU Vice-President/Education Officer Rebecca at Further information regarding the role of Class Reps is also available in the SU Council section of our website here.


Please note that lockers are now available. You need to register online first at and your locker will be reserved for a 3 day period during which you can call up to the SU to collect your key and pay for same.

Please note that keys for lockers in Áras Moyola and the Engineering Building can only be collected at the SU Engineering Desk in the Engineering Building foyer Monday – Friday 11am-3pm.

Is Your Bicycle Safe?

The Security Office, Students’ Union, An Garda Síochána and Transport Ireland are teaming up to promote bike security on campus. Pop along to the Bialann on Tuesday 8 September between 10-2pm for some top tips and goodies. Did you know the most secure place to lock your bike is the new Bicycle Park located beside the Arts/Science Building? Entrances are controlled by Student/Staff ID cards and there are CCTV cameras in place. With room for 300 bicycles, it’s where the smart cyclists park! Together we can cut out bike theft on campus.

Synapse Wednesday 23rd September

Synapse //a Tech Carnival, is a student organised, free one day interactive technology showcase by top companies in the Bailey Allen hall on Wednesday the 23rd of September. We have talks, discussion panels, give-a-ways, prizes and stalls from Microsoft, Google, Ericsson and many more, for full line up and free tickets go to and tweet #synapse15.

50km Charity Cycle for Diabetes Saturday 26th September

The Diabetes Centre at Galway University Hospital are holding a 50km cycle to raise funds for local charity Diabetes Care West on Saturday 26th of September. Money raised will go to support activities for young people (18-30 years) with diabetes. Registration is €30 and you can register here.

PIETA 100 Charity Cycle

The Pieta House 100 Charity Cycle is taking place on Sunday 27th September in 3 locations around Ireland – Limerick, Cork and Galway.

Each venue will host 2 Routes, a 50k  for all our leisure Cyclists and a 100k  for the more experienced. If you are interested in taking part and supporting the work of Pieta House pleaseregister today  at or call 061 484448.

Comedy Hypnotist – Tickets on sale NOW!

At 8pm on Monday 10th of February comedy hypnotist Michael McCoy will be back in NUI Galway doing his SeX Rated show as part of SHAG Week. Tickets are just €5 and are on sale now in the SU Office and at our desk in the Engineering Building (11am-3pm)  – this gig will sell out again so make sure you don’t miss out! 2014 SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week) takes place from the 10th to the 14th of February. Student Travelcards Update

Our Student Travelcard  Machine is finally working again so we can take your photo and print off your travelcard straight away in the SU Office for €15 Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. We are also able to issue ISIC Cards for €15 which work worldwide as student identification.

Volunteers needed for SU Charity Collection Day

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 8th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. SU Charity Aquathon – Win tickets to the Sea Sessions!

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 25th of February 2014. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan. 

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €25 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. We now have an extra incentive to get you involved as the Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival have kindly given us a pair of tickets for the participant who raises the most money for charity! You can sign up in the Students’ Union office and the Sports Centre now and collect your Sponsorship Card. You can also fundraise online via our iDonate page here. Entry includes free t-shirt and food for all participants. We also have a 5 week training plan to get you ready on our website here.

Seminar  ‘What drives attitudes about organ donation?

Friday 31st January at 8:00 pm sharp in Martin Ryan Annex Theatre 201. Speaker: Dr Eddie Rooney (Chief Executive, Public Health Agency, Northern Ireland; Chair of the NI committee on organ donation and transplantation. Followed by contributions by donor families and recipients and an introduction to the commemorative garden by Denis Goggin. Anyone interested in or affected by organ donation is invited to attend. Are you a young adult (18 – 25 years) living with type 1 diabetes?

If so, we invite you to an exciting and important evening where you will meet other people with type 1 diabetes. This is the first step in establishing a Youth Panel to design and share ideas to influence research in young adults with type 1 diabetes. Get involved and be a voice for young adults with diabetes. The event is being held on Wednesday 19th February 2014, from 6:30pm-8pm in JIGSAW, Fairgreen Road, Galway (opposite the new Coach Station). Suas Global Issues’ Course – Early Bird Rate now enrolling

The Global Issues’ Course is a seven week evening course which gives students an introduction to development issues in a critical, challenging, engaging and interactive way. This course is designed from a global justice perspective and provides a range of viewpoints on each of the key issues explored. Topics covered include an introduction to development, education, global health, trade and livelihoods, environmental sustainability and debt justice. The course will address each issue by looking at both the symptoms and the causes, as well as possible alternatives. The final session of the course will look at ‘what next’? and supports participants in finding a role for themselves to get involved and take action for positive change. On successful completion of the course all participants will receive a certificate.

The course will run for 7 weeks starting Tuesday 11 February from 6.30-8.30pm.

The cost for participants is €25 but an early bird price of €20 is available for participants who book and pay online at least one week before the course begins at The cost is subsidised by Irish Aid and EuropeAid. Any queries please email:

UCD’s Student Legal Convention, Ireland’s very first student legal forum, is taking place on Thursday 13th February. We’ve been invited to join many major players of the Irish legal, business and political system, and to take part in several workshops and seminars with them. Postgrad Open Day

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will be held in the Bailey Allen Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn (Student Centre), NUI Galway on Tuesday February 11, 2014. This is an excellent opportunity for you to talk to lecturers and current postgraduate students about the wide range of taught and research programmes available to you.

The AWC Annual Writing Competition is now live
All undergraduate students are eligible to compete. Essays must be on one of the three topics, can be no longer than 500 words, and must include citations from one or two published sources. The deadline is 21 February 2014. The winner will receive an Apple I-Pad 2; the essay will be published in Sin .Topics, guidelines, and FAQ can be found here.

The AWC provides free one-on-one tutorials on academic writing at 11-1 and 6-9 every day except Friday nights and weekends. More Information.


1st year Engineers – CÉIM Sessions

1st year Engineering students should take note of the times for their Semester 2 CÉIM sessions. These peer-assisted study sessions, led by 2nd years, will take place each week until the end of term. You were all assigned to a particular CÉIM Group early in September (Groups 1 to 10, below) and notified of this by email. If you are unsure of which CÉIM Group you are in, you can email, search for “CÉIM” in your student mail inbox or attend a CÉIM Group which is most convenient for you.
