NUI Galway Students’ Union Raise €15,400 for Galway Lifeboats & Threshold

NUI Galway Students’ Union donated €15,400 to Galway Lifeboat Station/the RNLI and Threshold after their year of charity events. Students took part in Croagh Patrick climbs, hair braiding, cake sales, a Christmas day in November, comedy gigs, pet farm visits and collection days to raise €15,400 for charity in the process!

Students’ Union President Jimmy McGovern said: “Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, students have once again done their bit to help others. NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities and they have excelled themselves this year.”

Galway Lifeboat Station/The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea.

Mike Swan, Lifeboat Operations Manager (LOM) at Galway Lifeboat Station said: “We’re so thankful to the NUI Galway Students’ Union for choosing us as one of their two charities this year. There are so many organisations doing good work in the volunteering and charity sector and we are honoured to be singled out by the Students’ Union. Some of our volunteer crew are students and graduates of Galway colleges so we are all delighted to benefit from the SU’s excellent fundraising initiatives this academic year.”

Threshold works to prevent homelessness and campaigns for housing as a right.

Diarmaid O’Sullivan of Threshold said: “Threshold is delighted to have been selected as one of the charities to benefit from NUI Galway Students’ Union fundraising activities for the 2016/7 academic year.  The funds raised will help Threshold keep families in their homes and prevent homelessness.”

Christmas in November and a Llama as NUI Galway Students’ Union launch year of Fundraising!

News & Events

NUI Galway Students’ Union will be supporting Threshold and the RNLI this year. Every year the Students’ Union selects two charities that benefit from its fundraising initiatives. This year’s fundraising events will include a Christmas Day fundraiser in November and a pet farm visit with star of the show Kuzco the Llama in December!

Students’ Union President Jimmy McGovern said: “We are delighted to be supporting two very worthy charities this year. Students in NUI Galway have a very proud tradition of fundraising for charity. We hope to improve on last year’s total of €22,500 raised during the year”

The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea.

Some of our volunteer crew are students and graduates of Galway colleges so we are all delighted to benefit from the SU’s excellent fundraising initiatives this academic year and we’re looking forward to working with them.”

NUI Galway Students’ Union launched their annual report celebrating a great year of student activism. The report outlines all the activities the SU has been involved in throughout the academic year including their charity events. Students took part in Croagh Patrick climbs, head shaves, leg waxes, cake sales, table quizzes, a Christmas day in November, comedy gigs, pet farm visits and collection days to raise €22,500 for charity in the process!

Copies of the annual report can be obtained from the SU Office and online here.

All of the money raised from these events has been donated to the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2015/16 – Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society.

Phelim Kelly, Students’ Union President said:

“Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, students have once again done their bit to help others. NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities and they have excelled themselves this year.”

Cathy Connolly of Galway Rape Crisis Centre said: “Galway Rape Crisis Centre is delighted and honoured to have been chosen as one of the NUI Galway Students’ Union nominated charities for 2015/2016. NUI Galway Students’ Unions commitment in working towards the betterment of every member of society will provide the necessary and vital help the GRCC needs.”

John McCormack, CEO of the Irish Cancer Society said: “We are delighted to be chosen as a charity partner for NUI Galway Students’ Union. As an independent charity, we rely on the public to support the work which we do in providing free services to cancer patients in Galway and across the country. One in three people in Ireland will now get cancer with incidence on the increase so demand for our services continues to grow.”

NUIG SU Charity Comedy Gig – Kevin McGahern & Fred Cooke

News & Events

636-SU-Charity-Comedy-PosterNUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Comedy Gig – Kevin McGahern & Fred Cooke 8pm Monday 7th of March

The current Heads of State in RTEs Republic of Telly and The Fear: Kevin McGahern and Fred Cooke, have decided to address the nation this March, live from NUI Galway!

Our last NUI Galway Comedy gig of the year is Kevin McGahern & Fred Cooke at 8pm on Monday 7th of March in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets are just €5 and all proceeds go to Galway Rape Crisis Centre & The Irish Cancer Society. Tickets on sale from the SU Office and the SU Engineering Building Desk.

Having carved out a niche for themselves in Irish Comedy circuit, they have agreed to enlighten a nation by answering the big questions facing modern Irish society….why should you never give Jay-z the satisfaction of a sideways glance? Just how sound are Irish guards? Is Fred’s sex life just like his driving situation: he has L plates and has to be accompanied by a fully licensed driver?

Kevin Mc Gahern is best known for his work on RTÉ’s flagship sketch show and for playing Sim Card in massive Irish hit comedy Hardy Bucks, McGahern has also been cutting his teeth on the Irish stand-up circuit, earning the respect of even the most grizzled of professionals.

Fred Cooke is known for his musical work on the Republic of Telly, The Fear, and now his New Reality Bites Show “Operation Transportation (Highway to Kells)”.

Don’t miss their one night collaboration When 2 become 1 in NUI Galway!

“Sharply written, brilliantly performed” – totally Dublin

“Gas bastard” – The Rubberbandits

“I love Fred Cooke. He has the real spirit of the Clown in him” – Tommy Tiernan

“Fred Cooke better make sure I’m headlining” – Kevin Mc Gahern.
