SU Elections Update – How To Vote on Thursday

We will be holding our Elections next Thursday 27th of September 10am-6pm to elect the new SU Vice President/Education Officer and the first SU Ethnic Minorities Officer. You will be able to vote in Smokey’s Café and Áras na Mac Léinn just remember to bring your NUIG ID with you to vote.

If you won’t be on campus to vote on Thursday please register before midnight on Wednesday 26th of September for a Remote Vote via the Students’ Union website. Once you are registered you can then log on to the SU Website 10am-6pm Thursday 27th of September to vote.

MMA For Self Defence €5

We have joined with Shaolin MMA to offer a two hour Mixed Martial Arts for Self Defence Course for just €5! Sign up in the SU now as spaces are limited. The course takes place 6pm-7pm next Tues 25th Sept and Tues 2nd Oct.

Financial Aid Fund Applications are OPEN

The Financial Aid Fund is a scheme aimed at disadvantaged students who require financial support to enable them to fully benefit from their studies. Applications close at 12noon on Monday 1st of October. Apply online HERE. Please email with any queries.


Apply Online for your Student Leap Card Now

Apply online now for your shiny new Student Leap Card and upload your photo. You can then call to the Students’ Union office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday with your code, your ID and €10 to collect your card. These are valid until the 31st of December 2019.


Class Representatives

Every class is entitled to a Class Representative to represent their class. If your class does not have a Class Rep your voice will not be heard. If you have any questions on the roles and responsibilities of a Class Rep contact the SU on . Further information regarding the role of Class Reps is also available in the SU Council section of our website here.


Bus To March For Choice

We are organising a bus to the National March for Choice in Dublin on Saturday 29th of September. Return bus tickets are €2 and are available from the SU Office. NUIG student ID required. Bus leaves The Quad NUIG at 9.30am and returns from St Stephen’s Green at 5pm sharp.  For more information contact

Sustainability Showcase

NUI Galway are hosting a sustainability showcase event in the O’Donoghue Theatre on Wednesday September 26th called Our Sustainability Journey.  The event will share sustainability related research taking place on the NUI Galway campus in a relevant and accessible way and demonstrate the relevance of sustainability in everyday living.  This is a free event but booking is essential so please book your ticket here


Porn as Sex Education Survey

Students aged 18+ are invited to take part in our anonymous online questionnaire about pornography. If you agree to participate you will be asked questions about what you have learned about sex from pornography, how you feel about your body and your sexual satisfaction. NUI Galway Students’ Union Road Safety Day

Road Safety Authority Interactive Shuttle + Roll-Over Simulator 11am-3pm TODAY Áras na Mac Léinn

  • Practice your driving and hazard perception skills on our simulators (car, motorbike, bicycle)
  • Take part in the roll-over simulation which demonstrates how it would feel if you were in a car which turned over in a collision.

#NUIGSU18 Elections Nominations Open TODAY!

Nominations for the 3 full-time paid officer positions of President, Vice-President/Education Officer and Vice-President/Welfare and Equality Officer will open at 10am TODAY Thursday 22nd of February 2018. Nominations close at 5pm on Wednesday 28th of February at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office. The Election will take place 10am-8pm on Thursday the 8th of March 2018.

The part-time officer positions of – Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality Officer, Societies’ Chairperson, Postgraduate Officer, Clubs’ Captain, 5 College Convenors and Mature Students’ Officer – will all be elected on Thursday 12th of April 2018. Nominations for these positions will open at 10am on Thursday the 21st of March 2018 and will close at 5pm on Wednesday 28th of March.

The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm in on Monday 5th of March 2018. Nominations for this position are now open and will close at 5pm on Monday 26th of February. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.

SU Council Chair Nominations are Open #NUIGSU18

Nomination forms are available from the SU Office and the SU Website. Nominations close at 5pm on Monday 26th of February at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office.

The Election will take place at the SU Council Meeting on Monday 5th of March at 6pm in AM250 Arts Millennium Building.

PLEASE NOTE: only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.


How many steps a day do you do? Could you handle 10,000?

The Marchathon 10,000 Step Challenge is happening from Monday 26th February to Friday 23rd March. Students and staff from colleges throughout the country will get out walking in this fun event to win prizes, get fitter and use their feet as a sustainable form of transport. Undergraduate Research Conference presents – PUBLIC SPEAKING: HINTS & TIPS FOR SUCCESS

Worried about public speaking? If the thought of talking in a small or large group gives you worries, come along to our workshop on communication and public speaking. Facilitator Joanne Duffy will be giving a fun, interactive talk about the hints and tips that have helped her to overcome confidence challenges and go on to be strong communicator! 6pm-7pm Tues 5th March in the Meeting Room upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn.


NUIG Relay For Life 2018

NUIG’s Cancer Society is holding their 4th annual Relay for Life 6pm-6am on Thursday 15th March. There will be various events on the night such as the survivors lap, competitions to win amazing prizes, themed laps, movie screenings, candle of hope ceremony, plenty of food, a variety of different performances and all while raising vital funds for the Irish Cancer Society. Focus Group Participants Required – FREE Pizza + €10 SU Card Credit!

The University are looking for students to take part in Focus Groups looking at your thoughts and opinions on NUI Galway “the brand”.

The Focus Groups will take place on Tuesday 27th of February at the following times

Galway Sports Partnership FREE Activity Leader Award Course this Friday & Saturday

Normally this course is €45 per person but NUI Galway students can attend for FREE. The course is targeted a people who are looking at delivering activities (sporting/games) to groups and it would suit anyone aiming to help out at summer camps, youth groups etc. The course takes place this Friday 6:30pm – 9:30pm and Saturday 9am – 4pm in the Connacht hotel. Call to Action! We want to hear your attitudes and beliefs towards people with obesity – survey takes less than 10 minutes

We are currently conducting an online survey of the levels of obesity stigma within the student population at NUI Galway. The results will be used to test the effectiveness of various interventions to address obesity stigma.

If you are a PhD student and you speak French, take part to this very special competition in Dublin on 14th March in Trinity College Dublin. You will have 3 minutes to present your research to a non-specialist audience. Registration is open until Tuesday the 27th February. This contest is open to all disciplines and all nationalities, with great prizes to win!

2018 Chinese Lantern Festival

To celebrate the Chinese New Year of Dog, NUI Galway China Society will hold a Lantern Festival Party in the Hub from 1pm on Sunday 4th of March. We will show some Chinese traditional culture, such as Chinese writing, painting and we will teach you how to cook the delicious Chinese dumplings. All students welcome!
