Uncategorized

NUI Galway Christmas Exams 2014

The Christmas Exams will take place from Monday 8th December to Monday 19th December. Exam Timetables will be released online at 4pm on Monday 17th November. Please check your timetable very carefully to make sure that all of your subjects are there and that there are no clashes.

We have partnered with City Direct Bus Company to provide buses to the two exam venues in Salthill at Leisureland and the Galway Bay Hotel. This service will run three times a day during the exams and costs €2 per journey – see timetable below.

In addition to the study space in the Library and the Reading Room there will be extra study spaces made available from the 29th of November onwards 8am-10pm in these locations.

The Exam De-Stress Programme will run from Monday 24th November to Friday 12th December with massage, acupuncture, reflexology and shiatsu available to students at a reduced rate by booking through destressbooking@nuigalway.ie

More Exam Tips and Information

Please be advised of a change in the process for deferring an examination or other form of assessment:

For the academic year 2014/15 a new policy on deferrals has been introduced, under the terms of which being granted a deferral in one examination automatically triggers a deferral of all subsequent examinations in that Examination session.

Staff of the College Office on behalf of the Dean may grant exemptions from this policy, allowing the student to defer one or more exams without the requirement to defer all subsequent examinations in a single session. The following is a list of grounds that may qualify a student for such an exemption, however, this list should not be considered comprehensive:

i)              Chronic illness (including mental health), which is known to the College Office, and which may require the student to spread the examinations over more than one Examination session in order to manage their workload.

ii)             A short-term but acute illness. This must be supported by a doctor’s certificate issued before or on the day of the examination for which the deferral is being sought.

iii)            A short-term but acute illness, involving a close family member or person for whom the student has caring responsibilities. This must be supported by a doctor’s certificate issued before or on the day of the examination for which the deferral is being sought.

iv)           Other short-term incidents/responsibilities, involving a close family member or person for whom the student has caring responsibilities. Such requests must be supported by relevant documentary evidence.

v)            A short-term incident that prevents a student from attending a specific examination but which does not impact upon subsequent examinations. Examples of this could be being involved in a motor vehicle accident on the way to the examination, being the victim of a relatively minor crime (e.g. mugging, burglary without significant violence) in the immediate build-up to the examination, etc. Such requests must be supported by confirmation from the Garda Síochána that the incident occurred.

vi)           An unavoidable family event, such as requirement to attend the funeral of family member. Supporting evidence will be required.

For full details please review deferral information available online.

Intervarsity BioBlitz! May 1st & 2nd 2014

On May 1st and 2nd Ireland’s first Intervarsity BioBlitz will take place. From 5pm on Thursday 1st May to 5pm on Friday 2nd May NUI Galway will race against UCC, TCD, DCU, UL, GMIT and Dundalk IT to record as many species as possible over the 24 hour period. The team that records the most species wins.

Biodiversity means the variety of all living things, so we need people to survey and identify birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, invertebrates, higher plants, bryophytes, lichens, fungi and diatoms. By recording as much wildlife as possible, the college can find out how biodiverse the campus is, and it is an important step in our efforts to gain a Green Flag. The Green campus needs your help! In addition to recording wildlife, we need people to help with organisation and public outreach.

If you are interested in supporting this unique event and finding out how bio diverse NUI Galway is please email karen.dooley@nuigalway.ie by Friday 11th April. Let us know what group/aspect of wildlife you would be able to help identify or what area you might be able to help with.
