Study on Facebook and Narcissim

We at National University of Ireland Galway are conducting a study on narcissism and how it correlates with various Facebook activities of users. For this purpose we have developed a Facebook app that requests your data while asking you to complete a narcissism survey which will not take much of your time (only about 5-10 minutes). At the end a narcissism score will be generated based on which you can assess whether or not you are a narcissist.

Here is the link for the app: https://unhp.com.pk/experiments/my_app/ you have to click Okay for Facebook authorization (or login with your Facebook account if you are not logged in). This will then take you to survey and you can fill it according to given instructions.

Please note there is a €50 cash prize for one lucky draw winner of all the participants who will complete this study.

Increase in Thefts of Bikes from NUI Galway

The Gardai have been in touch with us regarding the increase in bike thefts from NUI Galway. They warned that students using inferior, cheap locks are leaving themselves open to theft. If you are leaving your bike overnight or over the weekend please use the Bike Compound near the Bank of Ireland. This compound is purpose built, accessible only with your ID card and near the University Security office. Please invest in a good lock for your bike and take a note of the serial number on your bike so that you can report this to the guards in the event that it is stolen.

NUI Galway Students’ Union support Console and BeLonG To in 2014/15

NUI Galway Students’ Union will be supporting its nominated charities Console and BeLongTo this year. Every year the Students’ Union selects charities that benefit from its fundraising initiatives. Thousands of euro are raised by NUI Galway students through different activities ranging from sports competitions, collections and even a sponsored skydive.

Students’ Union President Declan Higgins said: “We are delighted to be supporting two very worthy charities this year. Students in NUI Galway have a very proud tradition of fundraising for charity. We hope to improve on last year’s total of €11,000 raised during the year”

Console is a national organisation supporting people in suicidal crisis and those bereaved by suicide through professional counselling, support and helpline services.

Margaret Tierney, Project Development Manager of Console said:

“We are indebted to NUI Galway Students’ Union for choosing Console as one of their charity partners, thereby raising awareness of the work of the Console Suicide Prevention and Bereavement Charity. We are always there to help when you are going through a difficult time and our free helpline 1800 247 247 operates 24 hours a day 7 days a week.”

BeLonG To support lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender young people in Ireland.

David Carroll, Executive Director of BeLonG To said: “We’re delighted to be one of this year’s chosen charities by NUI Galway’s Students Union. The support of allies like the students of NUIG is vital to our work to eliminate homophobic & transphobic bullying and support those lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans young people and their families and to build a fairer more equal Ireland”

Students interested in volunteering to fundraise for these charities during the year should contact studentsunion@nuigalway.ie

NUI Galway Students’ Union Raises €11,000 for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & ISPCC

Uncategorized

NUI Galway Students’ Union Raises €11,000 for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & ISPCC

NUI Galway Students’ Union organised a wide array of charity events over the 2013/14 academic year. Over 500 students took part in naked calendars, charity skydives, aquathons, fight nights, a Christmas day in November and collection days to raise €11,000 for charity in the process!

All of the money raised from these events has been donated to the Students’ Union nominated charities for 2013/14 – Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children (ISPCC).

Applications are now open for charities wishing to apply to be considered as one of the Students’ Union nominated charities for the 2014/15 academic year. Further information is available here.

Declan Higgins, Students’ Union President said:

“Despite the constant cutbacks and daily challenges we all face, students have once again done their bit to help others. NUI Galway students have a very proud tradition of raising money for charities and they have excelled themselves this year.”

Helen Mortimer, Executive Director of Galway Rape Crisis Centre said:

“We are extremely grateful to the students of NUI Galway for their continued support of Galway Rape Crisis Centre’s vital work. Income levels for the Galway Rape Crisis Centre continue to fall due to grant cuts and a poor commitment by government to address the issues of sexual violence and child abuse. These funds will be a huge help.”

Emma Hayden, ISPCC Fundraising Officer said:

“We are delighted with this support from NUI Galway Students’ Union.  The money raised will go towards funding our 24 hour Childline telephone and online services. Last year in our Galway office alone, we received just over 35,000 calls from children that are vulnerable, alone or in need of the support of a trusted adult.”

Free Mind Mapping Workshop

To tackle the problem of exam disappointment and failure or even just to improve your study techniques, we are holding a Mind Mapping workshop by Dr Dermot Burns from the Department of English on the 26th of February in AC2016 from 6pm-8pm. Mind Mapping is a useful technique that helps you learn more effectively, improves the way that you record information, and supports and enhances creative problem solving.

By using Mind Maps, you can quickly identify and understand the structure of a subject. You can see the way that pieces of information fit together, as well as recording the raw facts contained in normal notes. More than this, Mind Maps help you remember information, as they hold it in a format that your mind finds easy to recall and quick to review.

After Rails Girls Galway 2013 run successfully (mainly sponsored by NUIG, it received more than 100 requests for participation) a second edition (dates to be defined) has been asked for, ever since.
