NUIG SU Galway West-South Mayo General Election Hustings 6pm TONIGHT

We are hosting a General Election Hustings from 6pm tonight Thursday 4th of February in AM250 the O’Heocha Theatre in the Arts Millennium Building. This is your chance to meet and question the Galway West-South Mayo Candidates about why they are running for election and why they think you should vote for them. There are 10 candidates confirmed to attend tonight and we will be live tweeting the hustings @NUIGSU #MakeASmartVote More Information.

Volunteers Urgently Needed for SU Charity Collection Day This Saturday

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 6th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Galway Rape Crisis Centre & The Irish Cancer Society. By-Election of Convenor of College of Engineering & Informatics – Nominations Close 5pm TOMORROW

We are holding a by-election to fill the recently vacated post of Convenor of the College of Engineering and Informatics. The term of office for this position will be from 15th February to 30th of June 2016.

Nominations are now open and nomination forms are available from our website here and the SU Office.

Nominations close at 5pm TOMORROW Friday 5th of February. Completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office by this deadline. Late nominations will not be accepted. 

Election Day polling: 11am-3pm Monday 15th February in the foyer of the Engineering Building. Only students of the College of Engineering & Informatics can vote in this election. You must bring College ID to vote.

Focus Group Participants Required – FREE LUNCH!

Galway is applying to be the 2019 European Youth Capital and we need your help! We want the chance to show Europe how amazing Galway is for young people and in the process make Galway even more amazing for young people. We will be holding one hour focus groups, with free lunch thrown in,  to get your thoughts and opinions on all things Galway. SU Council Chair Election #NUIGSU16

Nominations will open at 10am on Monday 15th February 2016 for the position of SU Council Chair for 2016/17.

Nominations will close at 5pm on Monday 22nd February 2016 at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office.

The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year on Monday 29th of February 2016. 

Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election. More Information.

Will You Shave or Dye this February?

NUI Galway Shave or Dye will take place on Tuesday 16th of February and we need volunteers to donate their heads to be shaved or dyed on the day. We also need volunteers to help out with the promotion and running of the event. All funds raised on the day will go to the Irish Cancer Society.

SU Charity Croagh Patrick Climb – just 35 Spaces Available!

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb takes place on Saturday 5th of March in conjunction with NUI Galway Mountaineering Club. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €40 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society. SU Charity Aquathon – Sign up and get training now! 

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 23rd of February. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan. 

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €25 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and The Irish Cancer Society. You can sign up by emailing studentsunion@nuigalway.ie Entry includes free t-shirt and food for all participants.

The UnGoogle-able Quiz is being held on the Tuesday the 9th of February in the back of the College Bar at 19:30. Teams of four €5 a head, please arrive early to secure a table for your team.

Facilitated by Aisling Reidy Student Counsellor it starts Wednesday 17th February 2pm-3.30pm in AMBE (Psychology Wing) GO66 Training Room 2. This course is free but please book early as it’s limited to 20 people.

Advisory Session for applicants to the IRC Postgraduate Scholarship Schemes

5pm Wednesday, 13th January in Lecture Theatre (243), Áras Moyola (Nursing Building). Dr Lucy Byrnes (Dean of Graduate Studies), together with the Research Office, will host an advisory session on preparing a successful application. This is a good opportunity for applicants to seek guidance on their application and to have any questions answered.  Supervisors are also encouraged to attend.

CampusCreate, a space and practice, aims to encourage creative thinking across the NUI Galway campus in a fun and playful way. It’s a place for you to flex your creative muscles, and undertake weekly inspiring challenges, and to share these across the campus community. During the 12 weeks of semester two, ‘Creative Challenges’ will be posted via TwitterFacebook, and websiteEach week has a different theme and ‘Daily Prompts’ will support the challenge. ASIST Course now enrolling

Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST) is a two day skills building workshop in suicide first-aid. Ireland ranks 5th in the EU for rates of suicide with almost 500 people dying by suicide every year. Suicide first aid helps meet some of the challenges in reducing suicidal behaviour. It could help save a life. ASIST trains participants to reduce the immediate risk of a suicide and increase the support for a person at risk. It helps them seek a shared understanding of reasons for suicide and reasons for living.

The 2 day course will take place 9am-5pm Thursday 11th and Friday 12th February in Áras na Mac Léinn and you must attend both days.

The course is free but there is a €10 deposit required to reserve your place. Spaces are limited – sign up now in the Students’ Union Office Monday-Friday 10am-1pm & 2pm-5pm.

Student Travelcards & ISIC Cards Expiring 31st December 2015

Please check the expiration date on your Student Travelcard/ISIC Card – if it expires on 31st December 2015 make sure you call in to us before the Christmas break to renew it if you want cheap travel over the holidays! The Students’ Union office will close on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen at 10am on Thursday 7th January.

We take your photo and print the card off straight away for just €15.

NUI Galway Christmas Holiday Arrangements 2015

The Students’ Union office will close on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen at 10am on Thursday 7th January.

The Library will be closed Thursday 24th December to Sunday 3rd January (inclusive)

The Student Health Unit will close on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen on Wednesday 6th January.

The SU Cloakroom will close at 6.30pm on Friday 18th December and will reopen at 9am on Monday 11th January

The SU Engineering Desk will close at 3pm on Friday 11th December and will reopen at 11am on Monday 11th January

The College Bar will close at 3pm on Monday 21st December and will reopen on Monday 11th January.

The Hub is closed and will reopen on Monday 11th January.

Caife Na Gaeilge will close at 3pm on Friday 18th December and will reopen on Monday 11th January.

Smokey’s Café will close at 5.30pm on Tuesday 22nd December and will reopen on Monday 4th January (reduced hours for first week back 8.30am-5.30pm)

The Wall Café will be open 10am-4pm Monday 21st-Wednesday 23rd December. Closed Thursday 24th to Sunday 27th December. Open 10am-4pm Monday 28th Dec, 10am-12.30pm Tuesday 29th Dec, 10am-4pm Wednesday 30th December. Closed Thursday 31st December & Friday 1st January. Open 9am-6pm Saturday 2nd to Monday 4th January.

SUMS will close on Friday 11th December and will re-open on Monday 11th January.

Computer DISC will close on Friday 4th December and re-open on Monday 18th January.

The Academic Writing Centre is closed and will reopen in late January.

The Socs Box will be closing on Friday 18th December.  

Flirt FM 101.3 FM will be finishing on Friday 11th December and will be back on the air Monday 11th January. 

Sin Newspaper will be back with a new issue on Tuesday 12th January.
