NUI Galway Students’ Union Social Inclusion Week

Mon 9th Nov

8am- 1pm French Breakfast in The View. French society are catering to all of our needs this week, what better way to start your day than eating a beautiful free French breakfast!

8:15pm – 9:15pm Culture Night in The View. Be sure and come and see for yourself what cultures are out there. From traditions to food, everyone’s different and it’s time we learn more about each other.

Tues 10th Nov

2pm-3pm Trans* safe space collaboration with GigSoc in the SU Office.

6pm NUIG’s #safecampus discussion on how to make NUIG a safer campus specifically focusing on sexual health and support in The Hub Wellness Room.

7pm NUIG SU Pink Ladies night in the College Bar which includes a pop -up beauty salon with hair and makeup by Barry’s Hair Salon. Pink bubbles and a Chocolate Fountain, Rugby players getting waxed, a DJ, a raffle and your MC’s for the night Steven Sharpe and Tracy Bruen. All monies raised are going to Galway Rape Crisis Centre and the Irish Cancer Society

8pm – 9pm Writers’ Soc host a multi-language society collaboration to include the translating of colloquial sayings and proverbs to use as writing prompts in AC213. Food and refreshments provided

Weds 11th Nov

1pm – 3pm Ban the R Word Campaign in Smokey’s Café with Best Buddies Society. This campaign is trying to raise awareness on how certain words can hurt and isolate people with an intellectual disability.

3pm Ability West Talk about disabilities and the struggle students face every day.

8pm- 10pm “Inside I’m Dancing” film screening Dillon theatre

Thurs 12th Nov

3pm- 5pm in the Bailey Allen foyer Psych Soc is teaming up with Neuro Soc for social inclusion week. Ever wanted to see how your own brain functions look while chatting away? Pop over to our stand and grab a voucher for trying out our eeg monitors. Also, write on our equality board and the winner gets a prize! #littlethings

Examination Dates and timetable

Semester 1 (2015/2016) exams are scheduled for Monday, 7th to Friday, 18th December 2015 (inclusive). Students are expected to be available for exams for the entire duration of the exam session.

Please make sure you are correctly registered for your semester one modules otherwise they will not appear on your examinations timetable

Student Leap Card Vouchers Expire 30th November

Just a reminder that if you have a voucher from AIB for the Student Leap Card that you need to bring it in to us before the 30th of November to get your travelcard for €3. We are open 10am-5pm Monday-Friday and we will take your photo and print the card off straight away. If you don’t have one of the vouchers the Student Leap Card costs €15 and they expire 31st December 2016.

Movember TAG Rugby Blitz

NUIG Movember’s team – The TribesMoMen are delighted to bring you our inaugural Tag Rugby Tournament/ Taking place on Wednesday 11th November in front of the Quad (College Green / President’s Lawn). Teams of 7 (+ up to 5 subs & minimum 3 girls) will compete for the coveted NUIG Mo Tag Rugby Trophy! Entry fee just €10 and the winning team all get VIP wristbands for Electric. Limited spaces left!

India Soc &  ICSC Galway – Diwali celebration 2015

This year, the NUIG India Society along with ICSC Galway will be hosting Diwali – The Festival of Lights, on the 14th November 2015 in Bailey Allen Hall. Limited tickets for the Diwali festival are on sale – Early Bird price for €8 and after that €10 (students), and it promises to be an evening to remember.

Mindful Way Initiative Weds 11th Nov: A day of introductory classes on mindfulness with Tibetan Monk Gelong Thubten

08:00 – 08:45 Staff only – all levels welcome

10:45 – 11:30 – All welcome, all levels

12:00 – 12:45 Students only – all levels welcome

1:15 – 2:00 Students only – all levels welcome

5:00 – 5:45  Staff only – all levels welcome

These classes will take place in the Aula (Lower). Classes are free of charge and available on a drop-in basis, no pre-registration required. This free one-hour lecture is open to researchers, students, student counsellors and advisors, healthcare professionals, mindfulness practitioners, and anyone with an interest in mindfulness.

NUIG Postgrad Open Day Weds 11th Nov

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place on Wednesday, 11th November 2015 in the Bailey Allen Hall (Student Centre/Áras na Mac Leinn).

The event will run from 12pm-4pm, with short presentations taking place during the day also, covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research.

There will be over 80 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services. Panti Bliss Gig & Book Signing This Monday 17th November €5

Join National F*&%king Treasure, Performance Legend and Accidental Activist – Panti Bliss – in her hit comedy High Heels in Low Places, as she hitches up her skirt and hitchhikes to NUI Galway this November. Panti will be glamming up the O’Flaherty Theatre on Monday 17th November at 8pm. After the show she will be signing (and selling) copies of her autobiography “Woman in the Making”.

NUI Galway Students’ Union Christmas Day Thursday 20th November – Santa needs helpers!

We are holding a massive Christmas Day fundraiser in the College Bar with BizSoc on Thursday 20th of November to raise money for Console and BeLonG To. There will be a traditional Christmas dinner, carols, cheesy Christmas tunes with DJ Byrno and lots of prizes for the best/worst Christmas jumpers along with a whole lot of other Festive merriment! There will also be an after party super club that night in Electric and 44 Club.

Santa needs some helper volunteers to assist with the fundraising on the day so if you have an hour or two to spare between 11am and 6pm on Thursday 20th November email studentsunion@nuigalway.ie to sign up and you will definitely be on Santa’s nice list this year.

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day  is an excellent opportunity for you to talk to lecturers and current postgraduate students about the wide range of taught and research programmes available to you.

Run for Ger at 11am this Sunday 16th  November at NUI Galway

Stretch the legs this Sunday in the 5k ‘Run for Ger’ around campus. The run is one of the events in the fundraising campaign set up by the friends and family of NUI Galway graduate, Geraldine Lavelle

Ability West are currently in the running for the “Better Together” video competition 2014 and they need your help! Vote now HERE. Please note: Voting closes 21st November. Maker: A Documentary on the Maker Movement

As part of Galway Design Week there will be a free documentary screening (Irish Premier) of Maker: A Documentary on the Maker movement in the Huston Film School this Friday at 7pm. All welcome.

SU Enterprise Awards 2015 – Now Open! Deadline Fri 28th November

The SU Enterprise Awards are now accepting applications and there is a €23,000 prize fund up for grabs! If you have a great idea for a business or a social enterprise make sure you get your entry in early. Closing date for entries is 5pm Friday 28th November.
