Who is your teaching hero?
Is there one lecturer, tutor, technician or other member of teaching staff here in NUI Galway that went over and above the remit of their job to help you succeed in college? Whether you’re just starting, returning to college after a break or going on placement was there a member of staff here that made things that wee bit easier? Have they enthusiasm for, and commitment to their class that made you love their subject and want to excel in your exam? Well this is your opportunity to honour that very teacher.
The Teaching Heroes scheme is run by the Students’ Union, in partnership with USI and the National Forum for Teaching and Learning in Higher Education. Nominations will come from students for individual staff members. Two teaching heroes from NUI Galway will be recognised, who have had a positive transformative impact on students’ learning.
Teaching and research are both central to the role of staff, and excellence in teaching and in creative and scholarly work go hand in hand. Inspirational teaching has always been a key feature of the learning experience at NUI Galway. If you have someone in mind click on the link below and nominate your favourite teaching Hero. Nominate here.

Complete the National Student Survey

A national Student Survey is being carried out in all Irish universities, IoTs and Colleges of Education in February and March. The aim of the survey is to help enhance the quality of education Irish students receive by asking them in detail about their experiences. It is the only national student survey in Ireland, and it is important for the University to make sure our students’ views are well represented.

What you need to know

  • The survey is available at www.studentsurvey.ie
  • The survey will run in NUI Galway between Monday, 24 February and Sunday 16 March
  • It is open to first year, final year and Postgraduate taught students only
  • The survey comprises 100 questions and takes 15 minutes to complete
  • For every completed survey, €1 will be donated to the NUI Galway Financial Aid Fund for students.

Rail Girls Galway Needs Volunteers

Rails Girls is a worldwide movement aimed at giving a first approach to Web application development. It prioritizes female participants to address the IT gender gap by creating a sense of community between females who usually can hardly find similar peers helping and inspiring them, in the male-dominated IT area. This is achieved by local 2-days workshops in which attendees implement a simple application using Ruby on Rails. The workshop will take place on the 20-21st of June, 2014 in DERI, IDA Business Park, Lower Dangan, Galway City. We are currently recruiting volunteer coaches (of any gender) for Rails Girls Galway 2014. Please email railsgirlsgalway@gmail.com if interested more at https://railsgirls.com/galway.
