FREEZE THE FOUR – Rent Hike Protest 9.30am TODAY!

Join us at 9.30am TODAY at the Quad to protest against the recent 4% rent increase for NUI Galway Goldcrest student accommodation. From September a single room in the campus Goldcrest student accommodation will be €750 a month. This is a huge barrier to accessing education. Let’s show the University that students are not cash cows! If you can’t join us today then please sign our petition against the rent increases HERE


#NUIGSU20 Election Updates

  • Full Time Officer Nominations are now CLOSED. Candidates will be announced on our Facebook page after 5pm today.
  • Part Time Officer Nominations are OPEN. They CLOSE at 5pm Thurs 5th March
  • Hustings 3pm-5pm Mon 2nd March at Sult for Full Time Officer Election
  • Remote Vote Registration Closes midnight Weds 4th March for Full Time Officer Election
  • Full Time Officer Voting takes place 10am-8pm Thurs 5th March (10am-8pm in library basement, 11am-8pm in Áras na Mac Léinn, 12pm-6pm in Engineering Building, 10am-8pm on SU Website via Remote Vote) – Don’t forget your NUIG ID!
  • SU Council Chair Nominations OPEN 10am Thurs 5th March. They CLOSE Thurs 12th March.


Marchathon Starts Monday – Are You Registered?

  1. Get into a team of 3 – 6 people

  3. Get a Step Counter — download a free app, buy a pedometer, use a Fit Bit, or other step tracking device
  4. From 2nd March to 27th March get walking where possible, aiming to increase your steps throughout the challenge and win prizes for walking including SU Keep Cups!

We will be back in Smokey’s at 11am Mon 2nd March with free fruit and snoods and the first of our Wednesday walks is at 1pm Weds 4th March from outside Áras na Mac Léinn – all welcome!

Hustings – Meet Your Candidates

This is your chance to meet your #NUIGSU20 Candidates for

  • Vice-President/Education Officer

At the hustings 3pm-5pm at Sult on Mon 2nd March you can listen, question and decide who you want to vote for on Thurs 5th of March. The Students’ Union is your voice so make sure that you vote for the person who will best represent you and fight for your interests. Sin newspaper and Flirt FM will also be interviewing candidates to help you decide who deserves your vote.

Applications Open for EXPLORE programme – €900 Funding!

The Explore Programme is where NUI Galway students and staff find support for innovative ideas. Staff and students across campus are invited to apply for collaborative projects. There is up to €900 in funding, along with a support structure brought to you by the Innovation Office, to enable innovative ideas to get off the ground. Application deadline Fri 6th March.


Are you a young person with a disability or do you know someone who is?

Young people with disabilities (aged 15 – 20) are invited to take part in research about decision making and the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This research would like to learn about the decisions they make and if they feel they are supported or prevented from making key decisions in their lives. For more information contact Clíona at

The Academic Writing Centre is Open!

If you need help with essay writing just call in to them on the floor 2 of the Library. Their one-on-one tutorials are FREE with no appointment necessary. Opening Hours are Mon-Thurs 11am-1pm and 6pm-8pm (Plus Thurs 4pm-6pm).


Need to talk to someone?

Niteline Galway is a listening, support and info service run by and for students of NUI Galway. Volunteers go through rigorous screening and training programme based on the Samaritans model with support from the NUIG Counselling Service. The service runs 9pm-12am Weds & Thurs on 089 219 6918. You can talk about anything; no problem is too big or too small.


2020 PhD Write Up Bursary

The 2020 PhD Write-Up Bursary scheme is open for PhD students who are near to completing their theses yet who find themselves, for whatever reason, without funding. Applications are available here.

Seanad Éireann Elections

If you are registered to vote in the Seanad Éireann elections please note that ballot papers are being posted out from tomorrow Fri 28th Feb to the address that you registered under. Poll will close at 11am on Tuesday 31st March at which point your completed ballot paper must be returned BY POST to the National University of Ireland.


Student Achievement Awards

Nominations are open until 5pm Thurs 12th March for the USI Student Achievement Awards. Categories include: Student Representative of the Year, Mature Student of the Year, Charity Champion of the Year, Club/Society of the Year and Postgraduate Champion of the Year.


An Taisce/CUSP Climate Action Workshop

A Climate Action Workshop will take place 6pm-8pm Mon 9th March in Room AC213 (Corridor down by Bank of Ireland) Arts Science Building.  The workshop is open to all Local Climate Ambassadors and NUI Galway students. Light refreshments will be served.  Hope you can make it.


NUIG Teaching Excellence Awards

Nominations are now open for the 2019-20 NUIG Teaching Excellence Awards. Any member of staff actively involved in teaching may be nominated for their contribution. They must be nominated by two people, which may be two staff, two students, or one of each.
