The Welfare Crew will giving out information about drugs on campus on Monday next. The Gardaí will also be dropping in to answer any questions you might have! Keep an eye out for the lime green t-shirts!

Look Before You Leap: SU Election Information Night 7pm Tues 28th Jan
Are you thinking of running for election to the SU for the 2014/15 academic year? Come along to our Look Before You Leap – SU Election Information Night and find out all the ins, outs, ups and downs about running for election.  Our current SU Officers will be there to guide and advise you in the Cairnes Theatre on the Concourse from 7pm on Tuesday 28th of January.
Full Time Officer Election Nominations open Thursday 20th of February/close 26th of February.

Trans and Gender 101

The Students’ Union are delighted to have Laura Harmonn (equality and citizenship officer of USI) and Ivan Fahy (androgynous model) to give a short talk on the basics of trans and gender. Come along and ask any questions you have a and learn a little. 6pm Tuesday 28th of January in the Kirwan Theatre.

Choice 101

The Students’ Union, as part of its mandate to be a pro-choice Union, have teamed up with Choice Soc to have an informative workshop on everything you need to know about pro-choice and why we have a pro-choice Union. Join us in the Kirwan Theatre at 7pm on Tuesday January 28th. There will be guest facilitators and refreshment to follow.

SU Charity Aquathon – Win tickets to the Sea Sessions!

The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Aquathon takes place on Tuesday 25th of February 2014. The event consists of a 750m swim (30 lengths) in the swimming pool in the Sports Centre followed by a 5km run in Dangan. 

Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €25 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. We now have an extra incentive to get you involved as the Sea Sessions Surf & Music Festival have kindly given us a pair of tickets for the participant who raises the most money for charity! You can sign up in the Students’ Union office and the Sports Centre now and collect your Sponsorship Card. You can also fundraise online via our iDonate page here. Entry includes free t-shirt and food for all participants. We also have a 5 week training plan to get you ready on our website here.

Comedy Hypnotist – Tickets on sale Monday

At 8pm on Monday 10th of February comedy hypnotist Michael McCoy will be back in NUI Galway doing his SeX Rated show as part of SHAG Week. Tickets are just €5 and go on sale from the SU office this Monday 27th of January – this gig will sell out again so make sure you don’t miss out! 2014 SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance Week) takes place from the 10th to the 14th of February. Volunteers needed for SU Charity Collection Day

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 8th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for Galway Rape Crisis Centre and ISPCC Childline. Please email if you can help out at any of the following times 11am-1pm, 1pm-3pm, 3pm -5pm on Saturday the 8th of February.

Life Skills Spaces Update

We are now enrolling students for the following Life Skills Courses:

  • Cardiac First Responder Course €40 (usual price €70) 9am-1pm Thursday 30th January (6 spaces left)
  • 3 Day Occupational First Aid Course €100 (usual price €200) 9am-5.30pm Friday 21st Feb, Friday 28th Feb & Fri 7th March (5 spaces left)

$1·         3 Day Door Security Procedure Course €100 (usual price €175) 9am-5.30pm Friday 21st – Sunday 23rd February (6 spaces left)

Clubs Activity Month

The Clubs Activity Month “Get Off The Couch – Get Active” runs from 21st Jan to 26th Feb. New members are invited to join any club , if they attend the same club session for 6 weeks they will be entered into a draw. There are surprise goodie bags and loads of freebies up for grabs. The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will be held in the Bailey Allen Hall, Áras na Mac Léinn (Student Centre), NUI Galway on Tuesday February 11, 2014. This is an excellent opportunity for you to talk to lecturers and current postgraduate students about the wide range of taught and research programmes available to you.

ECDL Opportunity

The Computer and IT Office of the College of Arts, Social Sciences, and Celtic Studies is an accredited ECDL test centre. The ECDL establishes a measurable standard for everyone who uses a computer in either a professional or personal capacity. It is a certificate that verifies competence in computer use, and is an internationally recognised certificate.

ECDL online, interactive courseware can be used by all NUIG students via your Blackboard login. Please click here. for instructions on accessing the ECDL Core, and ECDL Advanced, self-study course.

We offer students the opportunity to gain the ECDL qualification at a nominal cost. Students use on-line training facilities to study modules in their own time. Exams are carried out (also on-line) in our Training Centre in AM102.

You are free to use the training material simply as a learning resource. There is a charge ONLY if you wish to register as an ECDL candidate, complete the exams, and gain the ECDL (Core or Advanced) certificate. Contact for further information.

GiGSoc Rainbow Ball

GiGSoc (Gay in Galway Society) are hosting its first ever Rainbow Ball, aimed at LGBTQ and Ally students. Venue is Salthill Hotel on Saturday 8th February, from 6.30pm onwards. Tickets are €32 each, which covers dinner, dessert, tea/coffee,  cocktail reception on arrival and most stupendous entertainment! Postgrad Ball

The Postgrad Ball takes place on Thursday, 6th March in the Westwood Hotel. At 6:30 pm there will be a drinks and sweets reception followed by a four course meal. There will be music from “The Lewd Tunes” followed by DJ. Early Bird tickets are €45 and are available on 5th and 6th of February 12-4pm in Áras na Mac Léinn. Enter McKinsey Venture Academy before February 14th
McKinsey Venture Academy is a social enterprise competition for university students based in the UK and Ireland. It is sponsored by McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm. The competition involves teams of students putting together a pitch for a social enterprise for €6,000 of seed funding and support from McKinsey mentors. The aim of the competition is to help students to tap into their creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, enabling them to transform their seedling ideas into social enterprises that make a difference. 
The competition is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate university students based in the UK or Ireland, regardless of the subject they study. We are looking for groups of 2-8 creative and enthusiastic individuals with a great idea and a desire to create change. You can enter with a social enterprise at any stage of development: from a brand new idea to a business that is already running that you are trying to grow. In last year’s competition, the vast majority of entries (and our winner) were very early stage ideas. Enter with a short summary of the enterprise before February 14th. The AWC Annual Writing Competition is now live
All undergraduate students are eligible to compete. Essays must be on one of the three topics, can be no longer than 500 words, and must include citations from one or two published sources. The deadline is 21 February 2014. The winner will receive an Apple I-Pad 2; the essay will be published in Sin .Topics, guidelines, and FAQ can be found here.


Pass On Your Skills! 
Click and Connect are seeking volunteers for their programme. The programme provides basic introduction to computer classes to those with little knowledge or confidence in using technology. The course covers topics such as using the internet, email and digital photography. Classes are 2 hours per week for 4 weeks here at NUI Galway from 27th January. 
If you can volunteer your time to help someone else make sense of technology please contact ASAP. Complete two sets of 4 classes to earn your Alive Volunteering Cert.


The Academic Writing Centre reopens on 20 January.
The AWC will provide free one-on-one tutorials on academic writing at 11-1 and 6-9 every day except Friday nights and weekends.

Snap a Sight for Sightsavers

What is the sight that you’d miss the most? Sightsavers are asking students to snap this sight on their phones or take it from Facebook and enter it into their new photo competition to win some cool prizes including iPads and vouchers.
