NUIG Marchathon Challenge – Win Prizes for Walking!

The Marchathon Step Challenge is back at NUI Galway Monday 4th March – Friday 29th March. Win some great prizes, including Garmin Activity Trackers, Me2U Shopping Vouchers, and Smarter Travel Goodie Packs! This March we’re challenging you to grab some team mates, lace up your walking shoes and march your way to some great prizes! Make sure to sign up by Sunday 24th of February to be in with a chance to win a €50 Shopping Voucher in the early registration draw! The first 50 people to register will also get a Step Counter – absolutely free!

How to take part

  1. Get into a team of 3 – 6 people
  2. Sign up online at
  1. Team captain: choose a team name and set your team up on the Active Travel Logger
  2. Team members: sign up online at Active Travel Logger, find a team and join it.
  1. Get a Step Counter — download an app (e.g. Free Smarter Travel Step Counter), buy a pedometer, use a Fit Bit, or other step tracking device
  2. From 4th March to 29th March get walking where possible, aiming to increase your steps throughout the challenge
  3. Have Fun and Get Competitive!


#NUIGSU19 Elections Nominations Open TODAY!

  1. Nominations for the 15 voluntary part-time officer positions will open at 10am TODAY Thursday the 21st of February and will close at 5pm on Thursday 28th of February at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office. The Election will take place 10am-8pm Thursday the 14th of March.
  2. Nominations for the voluntary SU Council Chairperson position will open at 10am on Monday 11th of March and will close at 5pm on Tuesday 19th of March. The Election will take place at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm on Monday 25th of March. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.

Have you registered for your Seanad Éireann Vote? The deadline to get your completed registration form in is this Tuesday the 26th of February so get it on your to-do list! Registration forms are also available in the SU Office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn. More information here.

J1 Information Sessions this Monday

USIT will be on campus this Monday 25th February with lots of J1 and Summer camp information to help you plan your summer. They’ll be at Smokey’s café 3pm-4pm and in the Large Acoustic Room from 5pm.


Student Survey Closes this Sunday – Win Prizes!

The National Student Survey is your chance to make a difference to the future of students at NUI Galway. The survey is open to: First Year Undergrad, Final Year Undergrad and Taught Postgrad students. There are lots of prizes to be won by filling out the survey too.

Irish Rail & NUIG Student ID Cards

Irish Rail and Bus Éireann will only recognise the NUI Galway Student ID for 4 years from date of issue. They take the first two digits from your student number as the date of issue. If your card is more than 4 years old or you are a returning student and are using your original student number you will need to purchase a Student Leap Card in order to get discounted travel with Irish Rail and Bus Éireann and avoid a fine.  You can purchase a Student Leap Card from the Students’ Union office for €10 just apply online here for your code first. You can find more information about Irish Rail’s Terms and Conditions here. You can also now top-up your Student Leap Card with credit in the SU Office. More information HERE. 


Postgrad Grants Information Today

As part of Find Your Masters month SUSI will be on campus today giving information about Postgraduate Grants.

  • 11am-1pm Postgrad Grants Info Stand in the Foyer of the James Hardiman Library – Visit the stand and have your Postgraduate grant queries answered.
  • 1.15pm-1.45pm Postgraduate Grants presentation by SUSI Grants Authority with time for Q&A at the end in the Fottrell Theatre, AM200, Arts Millennium Building

Speed Dating

There will be a speed dating event in aid of the Meningitis Research Foundation at 8pm on Wednesday 6th of March at Sult. Entry is €5 and includes free finger food. All preferences welcome! Tickets on sale 12pm-4pm Weds 27th February at Smokey’s Café and also on the night.


Childline Bake Sale this Tues

There will be a bake sale 11am-3pm this Tuesday 26th of February at Smokey’s Café in aid of Childline. Come along and either buy an already decorated bun or decorate their own cupcake to add to the fun. Have a #treatyourselfTuesday moment for just €2 in aid of Childline.

Free workshop – Bright Ideas – Investigate Your Business Idea

2pm-4pm Thursday 7th of March hosted by the Galway Local Enterprise Office in the Blackstone Launchpad Space on the Concourse. This special workshop will give young entrepreneurs all the knowledge and information they need to come up with a viable business idea. More info here.


Equestrian Club Table Quiz

NUIG Equestrian Club is hosting a fundraising table quiz at 7:30pm in SULT on Tuesday the 26th of February. Great prizes to be won including an overnight stay in a boutique hotel, Handsome Burger vouchers, Dough Bro vouchers and Electric wristbands as well as complementary finger food! Admission is €5 per person and you need a team of four so bring friends. More Info.


NUIG Astronomy Conference

The joint congress of University Astronomy Societies will take place 9am-5pm on Saturday 9th March in the Human Biology Building at NUIG. There are five speakers, Prof Andy Shearer and Dr Mark Lang from NUIG, Prof Niall Smith CIT, Prof Créidhe O’ Sullivan Maynooth University, and Prof Stuart Reid University of Srathclyde. There will be refreshments throughout the day and the event is totally free.


Be heard – On ending racial discrimination in Ireland

The Irish Human Rights and Equality Commission in association with the National Youth Council of Ireland are inviting young people – aged 16-24 – to tell us how the Irish government could create a more just and equal society that is free of racial discrimination. The event takes place 10am-4.30pm Saturday 30th of March in Dublin. Travel costs for participants will be covered.

Anyone who is living with or beyond cancer (+Family + Friends +Community) are invited to join this event 9.30am on Saturday 23rd of February at the Renville Park Oranmore Parkrun. All ages/abilities welcome including walkers. More Info
