SHAG Week Comedy Hypnotist This Monday €5

Following his sold out semester 1 gig we are delighted to announce that hilarious hypnotist Michael McCoy is back at 8pm on Monday 12th February in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets are just €5 from the SU/SU Engineering Desk and all proceeds from the gig will be going to Draíocht NUI Galway. This is part of our SHAG Week events so this show is not for the easily offended – you have been warned!

Become a 2018/19 CÉIM Peer Learning Leader – Applications Close Monday

Help 1st year students transition to university, gain a greater understanding of coursework, and meet new people in a relaxed environment. Open to current 1st year Engineering students, 1st and 2nd year BA Law students, and 1st year and 2nd year Geography students. Benefits: develop your leadership, teamwork and communication skills; boost your CV; meet new people; and receive a CÉIM leadership certificate and digital badge. Full training provided.   • 10am-1.30pm Disclosure Training with Galway Rape Crisis Centre. This training is designed to increase awareness of the causes and effects of sexual violence and give participants an opportunity to practice scenarios involving a disclosure of sexual violence. Sign up in the SU Office – Limited to 20 Students – €10 Donation to Galway Rape Crisis Centre.

#NUIGSU18 Elections

The full-time officers – the President, the Vice-President/Education Officer and the Vice-President/Welfare Officer – will all be elected on Thursday the 8th of March 2018. Nominations for these positions will open on Thursday the 22nd of February 2018.

The part-time officer positions of – Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality Officer, Societies’ Chairperson, Postgraduate Officer, Clubs’ Captain, 5 College Convenors and Mature Students’ Officer – will all be elected on Thursday 12th of April 2018. Nominations for these positions will open on Thursday the 21st of March 2018.

The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm in on Monday 5th of March 2018. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.

A Reminder from An Garda Síochána that they have a zero tolerance approach with regards to excessive drinking, drug abuse and public disorder in Galway.

Excessive drink/drug abuse and public disorder will lead to one or more of the following:

  • Fixed Charge Notice
  • Arrest
  • Charge Sheet or Summons to Court
  • Fines of up to €1,500
  • Criminal Conviction
  • Imprisonment

The Implications of a Criminal Conviction:

  • You won’t get a J1 Visa
  • You may not get future employment
  • Expelled University for Breach of Student Code of Conduct
  • Impact on Garda vetting for future employment

Galway Bye-laws on consumption of alcohol in public places:

  • Gardaí can issue a €100 on the spot fine if they catch you drinking in the streets.
  • This goes up to €200 if not paid within 21 days.
  • If you don’t pay in 56 days you can end up in court facing a charge of €1,500.
  • Don’t take the risk.

The Marchathon 10,000 Step Challenge is happening from Monday 26th February to Friday 23rd March. The Academic Writing Centre is now open
You can drop into the AWC to get help with all aspects of essay writing including the writing process (and writer’s block), essay structure, punctuation, using secondary sources and avoiding plagiarism. Opening hours: 11am-1pm and 6pm-9pm daily (except weekends and Friday nights).

Meet & Walk Group

There’s a new meet and walk group every Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday leaving from outside the Sports Centre at 1.05pm – all welcome to join the 45 minute walk!

Do you have an idea for a product or service? 
NUIG’s EntreSoc Start-Up School is where all students are welcome to pitch ideas, form teams, and build amazing start-ups all over the course of 5 weeks. The competition will start in G018 in the Alice Perry Engineering Building at 6.30pm on Thursday 8th of February. There’s a top prize of €3,000.

Are you registered to vote in Seanad Éireann elections? The deadline to be added to the NUI Seanad voter register is Monday 26th February.

Go to to download the registration form. It must be printed, signed and posted to the Records Office, National University of Ireland, 49 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 or sent as a scanned copy to before Monday 26th February 2018. Overseas graduates are eligible to vote in Seanad elections too.

NUI Galway 8K FREE Meet & Train Sessions 

The NUIG Galway 8k in aid of Jigsaw Galway will be held on Saturday 10th March on the NUI Galway Campus starting at 10am at the Kingfisher Club and finishing at the Quadrangle. There are free meet-and-train sessions on at 1pm each Monday, Tuesday & Wednesday and also Wednesdays at 6pm departing from the Sports Centre on the NUI Galway campus.


Smart Searching for your Assignments Free Classes Begin 13th Feb 2018

The Academic Skills Hub in the library are running drop-in classes for students on Smart Searching for your Assignments. These sessions will cover:

  • Navigating the library website
  • Using library guides to identify sources for assignments
  • An introduction to databases
  • Using Google Scholar to find information

Running Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays 11am-11:30am and Thursday 2pm-2:30pm, these short sessions will be held in the library training room on the ground floor of the library. No need to sign-up. For more info contact:

SU Charity Croagh Patrick Climb – Just 3 Spaces Left!
The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb takes place on Saturday 17th of February in conjunction with NUIG Mountaineering Club. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €40 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: Domestic Violence Response & AMACH!
