Volunteers Urgently Needed for SU Charity Collection Day this Saturday

We are urgently looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day this Saturday 4th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for The RNLI and Threshold. Please email studentsunion@nuigalway.ie if you can help out at any of the following times 1pm-3pm or 3pm -5pm.

SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance) Week 2017

Monday 6th of February

10am-1.30pm Disclosure Training with Galway Rape Crisis Centre. This training is designed to increase awareness of the causes and effects of sexual violence and give participants an opportunity to practice scenarios involving a disclosure of sexual violence. Sign up in the SU Office – 4 Spaces Left – €10 Deposit Required.

5pm-7pm FREE STI Clinic by appointment only. Make your appointment in the Student Health Unit or phone 091 492604.

7pm-9pm FREE Movie: Dallas Buyers Club with popcorn and discussion afterwards in Dillon Theatre

8pm-10pm Draiocht Society Comedy Hypnotist in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets €5 from Socs Box.

Early Valentine’s Day Rolos and Roses – FREE while stocks last!

All Week: Guess correctly how many condoms are in the jar and you could win them all! Entry €1 which goes to the SU Charities The RNLI and Threshold.

David O’Doherty €5 On Sale Now

We are delighted to announce that our next €5 comedy gig will be David O’Doherty on Monday 13th of February at 8pm in the O’Flaherty Theatre. €5 tickets are on sale from the SU Office and the SU Engineering Desk now.

 

Upcoming SU Workshops & Courses

  1. Disclosure Training 10am-1.30pm Monday 6th of February. FREE course with Galway Rape Crisis Centre. 1 Space Available. Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence. 5 CPD points per training – these are through the Irish Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy.
  2. Smart Consent Workshop 12pm-2pm Thursday 9th of February. FREE Course. Limited Spaces. A workshop where students explore what consent means in a fun environment. You are never asked about your own sexual history or experiences. Facilitators use their research findings to present scenarios and involve you in activities, to raise your awareness of what consent means to you.
  3. Occupational First Aid 3 day course 9am-5pm Friday 10th, 17th and 24th of February. €100 (usual cost €160) FETAC Level 5 course.
  4. Cardiac First Responder Course 9am-1pm Friday 3rd March €40 (usual cost €75). ONE space left.

Can You Braid Hair?

We are looking for some more hair braiders to volunteer for our fundraiser next Tuesday 7th Feb 3pm-6pm. Volunteers must know how to add extensions/attachments to braids.

SU Elections #NUIGSU17

  • Nominations open for the SU Council Chairperson at 10am on Monday 13th of February and close at 5pm on Monday 20th of February. The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm on Monday 27th of February. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.
  • Nominations open for the 3 Full Time Paid SU Officer Positions of President, Vice President/Education Officer and Vice President/Welfare Officer at 10am on Thursday 16th of February and close at 5pm on Wednesday 22nd of February. The election takes place on Thursday 2nd of March.
  • Nominations open for the 11 Voluntary SU Officer Positions of Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality, Societies, Clubs, Postgrad, Mature Students and the 5 College Convenors at 10am on Thursday 23rd of March and close at 5pm on Wednesday 1st of March. The election takes place on Thursday 9th of March.

Stock School Book Launch

On Wednesday, February 8th final year B. Comm student Jason Walsh launches his first book, ‘Stock School, A Colour Coded Guide To Financial Trading & Investing.’ The launch takes place in the library lobby at 4pm. The book, goes into greater detail than is covered in the Stock School lectures, which Jason has been teaching in NUIG since September 2015 as part of the Entrepreneurship Society events. The book launch is followed at 6pm with a trading workshop in AC 201 hosted by Dublin trading firm Positive Equity. There will be catering at both events and all students are welcome to attend either or both events. More information.

 

FREE Cloakroom open TOMORROW

The SU FREE Cloakroom will be open on Fridays 9am-5pm during term time. The service is still free but will only be one day per week. Items must be removed at 5pm and we can’t take laptops. The SU Cloakroom is located in the library basement beside the Students’ Union XL Shop.

 

NUI Galway Postgrad Ball Thursday 9th of March Salthill Hotel

There will be a Champagne and sweets reception, followed by a 4 course meal on the night. Entertainment will be provided by Top of the Popz and DJ afterwards. It’s going to be a fantastic night! Early bird tickets will be on sale Thursday 2nd and Friday 3rd Feb in Áras na Mac Léinn between 2pm-4pm for €45 and also on the Socs web store. Don’t forget your student card!

 

Exam Results

Semester 1 Exam PROVISIONAL Results will be published on Blackboard throughout January. Please check with your School/Discipline for exact release dates. These results will remain provisional until approved by the exam board. Exam Results FAQ

 

SUMS FREE Maths Support

SUMS offers FREE mathematics support to students across all colleges and courses as well as to students engaged in Access/Foundation courses.

 

NUIG Free STI Clinic – BY APPOINTMENT ONLY

Please note that you must make an appointment in person in the Student Health Unit or by phoning 091 492604 before attending. The STI Clinic runs 5pm-7pm Tuesdays and Wednesdays during term.
