Volunteers Urgently Needed for SU Charity Collection Day Sat 4th Feb

We are urgently looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 4th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for The RNLI and Threshold. Sign Language Courses 1 Space Left

Our basic introductory course in Sign Language runs over 10 weeks with a 1 hour class each week and costs just €40. You can sign up in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm or call 091 524810 to register with credit card. We have just ONE SPACE left on the 6pm-7pm Thursday course which starts tonight and runs until Thursday 30th of March.

Become a CÉIM peer learning Student Leader in 2017/18

Help 1st year students transition to university, gain a greater understanding of coursework, develop new skills and meet new people. Open to current 1st year Engineering students, 1st and 2nd year BA Law students, and 1st and 2nd year Geography students. Build your leadership, teamwork and communication skills; looks great on your CV; meet new people and work closely with lecturers; and receive a CÉIM leadership certificate and digital badge. First Aid Courses

We are now taking bookings for our First Aid Courses:

  1. Three Day Occupational First Aid Course 9am-5.30pm Friday 10th, Friday 17th and Friday 24th February €100 (usual cost €160)
  2. Cardiac First Responder Course 9am-2pm Friday 3rd March €40 (usual cost €75)

Spaces are limited to 10 students per course. You can sign up in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm or phone 091 524810 to register with credit card.

FREE Cloakroom open TOMORROW

The SU FREE Cloakroom will be open on Fridays 9am-5pm during term time. The service is still free but will only be one day per week. Items must be removed at 5pm and we can’t take laptops. The SU Cloakroom is located in the library basement beside the Students’ Union XL Shop.

FREE Workshop on Migration, Refuge and the SDGs

ALIVE in collaboration with the National Youth Council of Ireland (NYCI) will deliver training on the theme of Migration, Refuge, and the Sustainable Development Goals, on Wednesday 1st February in room G011 in the Hardiman Building. This training  will help you to: Understand the plight of refugees; Understand the drivers of migration in a wider political context; Learn how to use the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a tool providing insight and guidance. Training will include a number of practical activities to challenge you to think about your own role in the world and to consider ways to take action.

Training is free but spaces are limited so email to reserve a space.

CompSoc Camara Collection

CompSoc are running their monthly Camara Drop-off Point in 18 Distillery Road starting next Wednesday 1st February 2017 from 10am to 2pm. They are also looking for volunteers to help out for an hour between 10am and 2pm. All computers, laptops, monitors, servers and keyboard donations are welcome from University units, students, staff and the community. They are then sent to Dublin to be wiped to military standards before being sent to schools in Africa. We are unable to accept printers, CRT monitors, switches, projectors. More Info.

Computer DISC New Opening Times

If you need help with programming head along to Computer DISC in the IT building. They are open 12pm-4pm Monday-Friday and this is a FREE service.

NUI Galway Postgrad Ball Thursday 9th of March Salthill Hotel

There will be a Champagne and sweets reception, followed by a 4 course meal on the night. Entertainment will be provided by Top of the Popz and DJ afterwards. It’s going to be a fantastic night! Free Primary Sources Roadshow in Library

On Wednesday 1st February, the Gale Primary Sources Roadshow will visit NUI, Galway.  The roadshow will take place in the Library foyer from 11-3pm and there will be experts on hand to show students and researchers the best way to find primary sources for essays, projects and dissertations as well as learn how to use powerful tools like term frequency.  It’s a free drop in event and more information on this event can be found on the library website.

NUIG Postgraduate Open Day Tuesday 7th of February

The event will run from 1pm to 5pm in Áras na Mac Léinn with talks and panel discussions taking place during the day also, covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, research and changing direction with your Postgrad study.

There will be over 80 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Research Office, and other student support services. SUMS FREE Maths Support

SUMS offers FREE mathematics support to students across all colleges and courses as well as to students engaged in Access/Foundation courses.

Survey: The Association between alcohol induced falls, related injuries and occupational dysfunction among Irish university students – a cross sectional study 

I am a final year Occupational Therapy student, as part of my final year research I am inviting NUIG students who have experienced a fall or fall-related injury whilst under the influence of alcohol to complete a questionnaire.  Anyone over the age 18 who has experienced a fall whilst under the influence of alcohol is invited to take part. Participation is wholly voluntary. The questionnaire should take no more than 5 minutes to complete.
