Working & Travelling Abroad Fair This Wednesday

The NUI Galway Working and Travelling Abroad Fair 2017 will help you to plan the best summer ever! The Fair will take place 12pm-3pm on Wednesday 25th January 2017 in Áras na Mac Léinn.
Exhibitors include: J1 Visa companies, travel companies, volunteering/adventure companies, internships/training companies and there will be delicious food stalls to fill your belly as you plan your summer!

Sign Language Courses Start Tuesday

Our basic introductory course in Sign Language runs over 10 weeks with a 1 hour class each week and costs just €40. You can sign up in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm or call 091 524810 to register with credit card.

Course A: 12pm-1pm Tues 24th Jan – Tues 28th March
Course B: 1pm-2pm Tues 24th Jan – Tues 28th March

Course C: 6pm-7pm Weds 25th Jan – Weds 29th March COURSE FULL

Reminder Financial Aid Fund Application workshops TODAY

Workshops take place TODAY Thursday 19th January at 5pm, 5.30pm & 6pm in MRA201, the Ryan Lecture Theatre in the Martin Ryan Annex Building.

These workshops will help you see if you are eligible to apply for the Financial Aid Fund and give you guidelines to fill out your online application. Application deadline is 12noon Monday 30th January.

Cloakroom open TOMORROW

The SU FREE Cloakroom will be open on Fridays 9am-5pm during term time. The service is still free but will only be one day per week. Items must be removed at 5pm and we can’t take laptops. The SU Cloakroom is located in the library basement beside the Students’ Union XL Shop.

Volunteers Needed for SU Charity Collection Day Sat 4th Feb

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our SU Annual Charity Collection day on Saturday 4th February. We will be shaking buckets and convincing the good people of Galway to give us their spare change for The RNLI and Threshold. Please email if you can help out at any of the following times 11am-1pm, 1pm-3pm, 3pm -5pm.

Exam Results

Postgrad Officer By Election Vote Next Thursday

We will be holding a by-election 11am-3pm next Thursday 26th of January in Smokey’s Café to fill the vacant position of SU Postgraduate Officer. Please note only registered Postgrad students may vote in this election and you must have your NUI Galway ID card to vote.


NUIG Mountaineering Club Need Your Votes!

NUIG Mountaineering Club have been nominated for an award from the Outsider Magazine for the best “Outdoor/Adventure Event” for their Maamturks Challenge. The final decision is down to public vote, and they need your help to win this! First Aid Courses

We are now taking bookings for our First Aid Courses:

  1. Three Day Occupational First Aid Course 9am-5.30pm Friday 10th, Friday 17th and Friday 24th February €100 (usual cost €160)
  2. Cardiac First Responder Course 9am-2pm Friday 3rd March €40 (usual cost €75)

Spaces are limited to 10 students per course. You can sign up in the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm or phone 091 524810 to register with credit card.


Become a CÉIM peer learning Student Leader in 2017/18

Help 1st year students transition to university, gain a greater understanding of coursework, develop new skills and meet new people. Open to current 1st year Engineering students, 1st and 2nd year BA Law students, and 1st and 2nd year Geography students. Build your leadership, teamwork and communication skills; looks great on your CV; meet new people and work closely with lecturers; and receive a CÉIM leadership certificate and digital badge. New Life Skills Course: Disclosure Training with Galway Rape Crisis Centre

This half day course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence. The main aims of the training are to:

  • Increase awareness of the causes and effects of sexual violence
  • Examine attitudes, values and beliefs about sexual violence
  • Promote an understanding and give opportunity to practice scenarios involving a disclosure of sexual violence
  • Introduce the work of Galway Rape Crisis Centre, and give information on the broad range of services we they provide

The Course will take place 10am-1.30pm Monday 6th of February in The Space, upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn

USI Women in Leadership Seminar

Registration is now open for the #WomenLead17 two day seminar in Dublin 27th and 28th of January. The event is aimed at students who are aspiring to run for student leadership positions in their Students’ Unions as well as to become the heads of their college clubs or societies. Apply online here


SU Charity Croagh Patrick Climb – Registration Deadline Tuesday 24th January
The NUI Galway Students’ Union Charity Croagh Patrick Climb takes place on Saturday 18th of February 2017 in conjunction with NUIG Mountaineering Club. Participants are asked to raise a minimum of €40 to take part and all proceeds will go to the SU Charities: The RNLI &Threshold Ireland

Complete the National Student Accommodation Survey

USI have prepared a national student accommodation survey to gather more evidence on the current housing situation of students. 7 A Side Gaelic Competition – Ball Tickets to be Won!

The next NUI Galway Ultimate Team event will be 7 a side Gaelic competition 4pm-6pm Wednesday 25th of January in Dangan. Students and staff can register online at and you can follow us on Facebook

You can register a team or come as an individual. The winning team will get to choose full ball tickets of their choice. Prizes will also be given to runners up.


Women’s March on Galway 2pm this Saturday

The Women’s March Galway is a women-led movement bringing together people of all genders, ages, races, cultures, political affiliations and backgrounds in Eyre Square on January 21, 2017 at 2 pm. We march together in solidarity with the Women’s March in Washington and all other sister rallies around the world to affirm our shared humanity and pronounce our bold message of resistance and self-determination.

Huston Film School Guest Speaker Series 2.30pm Today

Galway’s Huston Film School continues it’s ‘Guest Series’ this semester with a particular focus on returning graduates from the various programmes. Guest speakers will share their experiences and information on their careers to date since leaving the school. The series of talks will take place every Thursday afternoon at 2.30pm in Huston Main. All talks are FREE and open to the public.

Famelab Galway 21st Feb – call for entries

The College of Science at NUI Galway will host the second annual Galway regional heat of the Famelab International “Talking Science” festival on Tuesday 21st of February in An Taibhdhearc Theatre. Contestants have three minutes to speak on any scientific topic of their choice. The competition is open to anyone who is working or studying in any STEM area.
