We will be holding a by-election to fill the recently vacated part-time officer post of SU Postgraduate Officer.
- Nominations Open: 10am Thursday 12th of January. Nomination forms will be available from the SU & SU website
- Nominations Close: 5pm Wednesday 18th of January. Completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office.
- Election Day: 11am-3pm Thursday 26th of January. Please note only registered Postgrad students may vote in this election but all students can run for this position.

Rover Soc’s Help the Homeless Christmas Collection Thurs 15th December
Rover Soc is organising a Christmas collection on Thursday 15th of December where they drive by the various student residences to collect any items that you think you will no longer use or which you cannot bring home with you. They might not mean anything to you, but can mean the world to any of the homeless people out on the streets of Galway. Please spare some of your time to gather those items and drop them off at the allocated times. More Information.
Student Leap Card Expiry
If you have one of the red Student Leap Cards this will expire on the 31st of December 2016. You can get a new card in the Students’ Union Office for just €10 now and this will be valid until the 31st of December 2017.
1st/2nd Year Textbooks Appeal for Refugees in Greece: Deadline to donate TOMORROW
Despite potential, refugees awaiting relocation in Greece face a great disadvantage in accessing university-level studies. Even independent learning is blocked with limited or no internet access in the camps. Please donate your used 1st or 2nd year textbooks and give these ambitious, deserving students the opportunity to continue learning. Donations can be dropped off at the Students’ Union office. They are in desperate need of maths, science and engineering texts.

Semester 1 Exam PROVISIONAL Results will be published on Blackboard throughout January. Please check with your School/Discipline for exact release dates. These results will remain provisional until approved by the exam board.

The I Welcome campaign asks you to add your voices to the growing calls for an end to the Irish system of Direct Provision which has been condemned by the UN for breaching human rights.
- Take a photo of yourself holding a sign that says I Welcome Refugees Here and state your location. Signs are available from the SU Office or you can handwrite your sign.
- Upload it to your Facebook/Twitter/Instagram with the hashtag #EndDirectProvision
- Tag 3 social media friends in your post to also participate in the campaign.
- Tag the campaign page in your post.

Applications now open for The Hardiman and Dr Tony Ryan PhD Scholarships which are fully funded for four years, with a stipend of €16,000 p.a. plus fees.
These scholarships are for students starting their PhD in September 2017. Application deadline 17th February 2017.
Cloakroom open TOMORROW
The SU FREE Cloakroom will be open on Fridays 9am-5pm during term time. The service is still free but will only be one day per week. Items must be removed at 5pm and we can’t take laptops. The SU Cloakroom is located in the library basement beside the Students’ Union XL Shop.
Registration is now open for our next 8 week yoga course which starts in January.

Would you like to use your voice to help those experiencing homelessness?
Galway Simon Community are looking for choirs and individuals to get involved in Sing for Simon which will take place on Sunday 18th December in the Eyre Square Shopping Centre.
The 8 hour carolathon will be packed with music and entertainment to help raise funds and awareness to tackle homelessness in Galway.

Free Screening of Science on Screen documentaries TODAY
There will be a free screening of two documentaries at 2.30pm today in ILAS Building near Corrib Village and all are welcome.
‘Feats of Modest Valour’, is a touching portrait of three individuals with Parkinson’s Disease and the scientists who are developing a new medical device, which could potentially halt or even cure the disease. ‘Mending Legends’, looks at the devastating effects of tendon injury on sports people and the team of scientists who are working to form the world’s first 3D cell assembled tendon prototype. Both documentaries are 26 minutes long.
Volunteers Needed for Hand in Hand
Volunteers are needed for an hour or two to help out with Hand in Hand the National Children’s Cancer Charity bucket collections at Eyre Square Shopping Centre on Sunday 11th, Wednesday 21st & Thursday 22nd December. The Lamp is an international literary journal dedicated to showcasing the creative writing of graduate and professional students. Call for submissions from NUIG students working in low pay sectors to the Low Pay Commission.
The Commission is an independent body the main function of which is to advise the Government on the appropriate rate of the National Minimum Wage. The Commission is currently reviewing the allowances for board and lodgings provided for under the National Minimum Wage Act 2000.
They are looking for submissions from individual students who work in low pay sectors and may be affected by the National Minimum Wage and the board and lodging rates provided for under the National Minimum Wage. Submissions do not have to follow any specific format.

#MondayMassage offers treatments at an affordable rate to NUI Galway staff and students. Choose from acupuncture, massage, physical therapy and shiatsu. Student rate 30 min €20, 1 hour €30/Staff rate 30 min €30, 1 hour €50. Every Monday in the Wellness room in The Hub. Five of the twenty General Access PC Suites will be closed from 2nd to 16th December as they are being used for exams. These are: 3 PC Suites in Engineering building, IT106 and the Finnegan PC Suite. ISS will have signage on doors to direct students to other available PC suites nearby.
