Welcome to the first weekly email from your Students’ Union for the new academic year.

What is the Students’ Union?

“The mission of the Union shall be to represent its members and promote, defend and vindicate the rights of its members at all levels of society.” – Constitution of the Students’ Union

The SU is a representative organisation that is independent from the University and consists of all registered students at NUI Galway.  As the SU is an independent body, the SU officers do not have to answer to the University authorities – we only answer to you, our members who have elected us.

TODAY Thursday 1st September

10am-5pm SU Office: Get your SU Card, Student Leap Card, Locker, Second hand Books, play our Giant Games and maybe win a prize!

1pm-6pm Clubs Picnic in the Park in the Kingfisher Sports Hall with BBQ, DJ, Tag Rugby and Ultimate Frisbee.

1pm-6pm Wellness Fair in Áras na Mac Léinn with free food and more.

5pm-7pm Glow in the Dark Dodge Ball in the Kingfisher Sports Hall

6pm & 8pm Movies with the Societies in Áras na Mac Léinn

8pm Karaoke/Lypsync Battle in Sult (College Bar) with comedian Steve Bennett (over 18’s ID required)

Friday 2nd September

2pm Irish Set Dancing in the Hub with ALIVE

8pm SU Comedy Hypnotist Michael McCoy in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets €5 on sale in the SU and SU Engineering Desk NOW!

Tuesday 13th September

11am-3pm Volunteering Fair in Áras na Mac Léinn

8pm SU FREE Outdoor Cinema outside the Engineering Building. Join us to watch the Lion King on the big screen. FREE popcorn for the first 100 people. No booze. Bring something to sit on!

Wednesday 14th September

11am-4pm SU Freshers’ Fair in Áras na Mac Léinn. FREE Stuff, SU Diaires, Flirt FM Wall Planners, Inflatables, Food Stalls and more FREE Stuff!

Thursday 15th September

4pm-5pm ALIVE Welcome Hour in the View with FREE Food! Find out about volunteering at NUI Galway.

Books – Buy & Sell

Remember we sell second-hand books to save you a bit of cash and we can also sell them on your behalf to make you some cash! Have a look at our second-hand bookshop for more information on buying or selling here.


NUIG Free STI Clinic

There will be a free STI Clinic operating from the Student Health Unit in Áras na Mac Léinn every Tuesday & Wednesday evening 5pm-7pm from Tuesday 19th September to Wednesday 30th November. The clinic is by appointment only on a first come, first served basis.


Connacht vs Glasgow Warriors Tickets €15

We will be selling reduced rate NUI Galway student tickets for all the Connacht Rugby home matches again this season. First up is Connacht vs Glasgow Warriors NUIG Student Tickets €15 (Bohermore Terrace) on sale now from the SU Office. Kick-off is 17:15 Saturday 3rd September. NUI Galway student ID Required.

Spaces are filling up fast for our Life Skills Courses for this year. You can sign up in the SU Office or phone 091 524810 to register with credit card for:

Matt Cooper – The Last Word on Campus on Tuesday

The Last Word will be broadcasting live from Campus on Tuesday 6th September and you can be in the audience. Just apply for your FREE ticket via Eventbrite.
They’ll be debating issues that are controversial both on and off campus, meeting some international rugby stars, finding out whether Galway really is one of the friendliest cities in the world, and, yes – there will be free stuff!

Comedy Hypnotist 8pm Monday 12th September €5

NUI Galway Students’ Union presents SeX Rated Comedy Hypnotist Michael McCoy at 8pm on Monday 12th September in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets are €5 and are on sale now from the SU Office (Mon-Fri 10am-5pm) and the SU Engineering Desk (Mon-Fri 11am-3pm).Warning: This show is not for the easily offended – get your tickets quick as this is always a sell-out event!


Competition Time – Win Two Tickets for Connacht vs Ospreys

If you would like to win two tickets for Connacht Rugby vs Ospreys on Saturday 10th September at 7.35pm just email and tell us the name of the Students’ Union President for 2016/17. Competition closes 1pm Wednesday 7th September.


Winner – recent Facebook survey

Congratulations to Drew Bell, first year Science, who won the iPad Mini 2 for completing the recent survey about Facebook.  The survey was run by Dr Elaine Wallace, Marketing Discipline, NUI Galway.


Student Leap Cards now just €10

The shiny new Student Leap Cards are available now from the Students’ Union office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday. All you need to do is bring yourself, your new college ID, €10 and a smile for the photo we will take of you. These are valid until the 31st of December 2017.

SU Cloakroom Update

Unfortunately the University has withdrawn funding for the Cloakroom service so we won’t be reopening the Cloakroom this year. We are working to see if there is any way to resolve this situation.

Class Representatives

Every class is entitled to a Class Representative to represent their class. If your class does not have a Class Rep your voice will not be heard. If you have any questions on the roles and responsibilities of a Class Rep contact the SU Vice-President/Education Officer Cathal at Further information regarding the role of Class Reps is also available in the SU Council section of our website here.


Financial Aid Fund opens 12th September

The Financial Aid Fund is intended to tackle disadvantage by providing financial support to students who require financial support to enable them to fully benefit from their third level studies. 

Semester 1 Financial Aid Fund Online Applications open on Monday 12th of September and close at 12 noon on Friday 30th September. More information.


NUI Galway Charity 8k

Registration is now open for the NUI Galway 8k run/jog/walk/crawl in aid of Jigsaw at 10am on Saturday 24th of September. You can register for the early bird rate of €20 which all goes to charity online here now.


Lockers On Sale Now

You need to register online first at and you can either pay online and collect your key at your leisure OR you locker will be reserved for a 3 day period during which you can call up to the SU to collect your key and pay for same. PLEASE NOTE: after the 3 days your reservation expires if you don’t call in to pay.

Please note that keys for lockers in Áras Moyola and the Engineering Building can only be collected at the SU Engineering Desk in the Engineering Building foyer Monday – Friday 11am-3pm.

The Disability Federation of Ireland in collaboration with Enable Ireland are doing some research on Assistive Technology provision for people with disabilities in Ireland.
