EXPLORE Innovation Showcase NUI Galway 12th May 2016

News & Events

22 projects seed funded by the NUI Galway/NUI Galway Students’ Union EXPLORE innovation initiativewill be showcased on Thursday, 12 May 2016 from 12:45-14:00 in the Aula Maxima, NUI Galway.

EXPLORE is a dynamic innovation model that supports NUI Galway students and staff and external organisations to collaborate as equal partners to bring about positive change on campus and in the wider community. It was initiated by NUI Galway Students’ Union and NUI Galway in early 2012 and has seed funded over 100 new projects involving more than 600 students and staff. These projects have gone on to raise over €290,000 funding to date.

EXPLORE is based on the ‘Students as Partners’ and ‘Students as Co-creators’ concepts, both of which feature as key elements in the new Higher Education Authority report entitled ‘Enhancing Student Engagement in Decision-making’, published on 14 April 2016.

The EXPLORE programme won the Community Awareness Award at the National Student Achievement Awards 2016 in Dublin Castle on 28 April. These awards recognise the contribution of individuals and groups from third level education institutions across the island of Ireland.

The showcase event on 12 May will see this year’s 22 EXPLORE projects exhibiting their innovative projects. The keynote address will be given by Dr Easkey Britton, surfer, social activist and scientist, who will talk about using one’s passion for social good and the Waves of Freedom organisation she co-founded (https://easkeybritton.com and https://wavesoffreedom.org/).

As part of the build up to the event, a mini Pi-Bot Arduino robot built via the new MakerSpace at the NUI Galway Hardiman Library will set out shortly from the Hardiman Library and aim to arrive at the Aula Maxima in time for the EXPLORE showcase on 12 May. The Pi-Bot is a prototype that has been created as part of an EXPLORE project with the aim of exposing Physics secondary school students to electronics, photonics and robotics in an interactive and fun way.See the Pi-Bot’s progress via @EXPLOREnuigsu and @nuigmakerspace.

Students’ Union President Phelim Kelly says:“EXPLORE is a proven model for enabling innovation. It has brought hundreds of NUI Galway students and staff together to work on over 100 projects to benefit the entire community. This year’s EXPLORE student and staff partners have co-created some inspiring new projects. We’re looking forward to seeing these projects showcase their work on 12 May.”
