Working & Travelling Abroad Fair this Wednesday

The NUI Galway Working and Travelling Abroad Fair will help you to plan the best summer ever! The Fair will take place 12pm-3pm on Wednesday 23rd January  in Áras na Mac Léinn. Exhibitors include: J1 Visa companies, travel companies, volunteering/adventure companies, internships/training companies and there will be delicious food stalls to fill your belly as you plan your summer! €5 tickets for our charity David O’Doherty gig on Monday 28th of January are on sale from the SU Office and the SU Engineering Desk now. All proceeds go to the SU Charities Galway Rape Crisis Centre and COPE Galway. €5 tickets are also on sale for Neil Delamere on Monday 18th of February.

Volunteers Needed

We are looking for volunteers to help out with our annual charity collection day in Galway City on Saturday 2nd of February 2019.

Volunteers are needed for the following time slots: 11am-1pm, 1pm-3pm or 3pm-5pm. You will be holding a collection bucket and asking the public to donate what they can to the SU Nominated Charities: Galway Rape Crisis Centre and COPE Galway. Email joanna.brophy@nuigalway.ie to volunteer

SHAG Week Events

As part of our SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance) Week events this year we have two very special free events taking place.

  • On Saturday 9th of February we will host the powerful “Not Consent” Exhibition.
  • On Tuesday 12th of February at 6pm we will host the NUIG Premier of the movie “The Meeting”. Tickets are free but limited – apply online now.

The SU Free Cloakroom is open 9am-6pm Thursdays and Fridays during term. It’s located near the SU XL Shop.

 

Learn To Swim

The Swimming Club are running a 10 week Learn To Swim Course for just €60. The course is suitable for beginners and novices and will be starting Wednesday 23rd of January with two time slots 7.30pm and 8.15pm. Registration will take place 10am-3pm Wednesday 23rd of January at Clubs Day in the Kingfisher. Limited places. Contact swimming@clubs.nuigalway.ie for more information.

ComputerDISC Reopens this Monday 21st of January providing a free Computer Programming Drop-In Support Centre for all NUI Galway students who are taking any programming/software development courses.

 

USI Elections 2019

Nominations for the annual Union of Students in Ireland (USI) elections will open on Monday 21st January, 2019 and must be submitted prior to 5pm on Tuesday 26th February, 2019. This election will take place at USI Congress 2019 and will determine the Union of Students in Ireland Officer Board for the academic year 2019/2020. USI is the national representative body for the 374,000 students in third level education on the island of Ireland.

Galway Gardaí Divisional Youth Awards

Do you know a young person/group aged 13-12 whose dedication and undocumented good will has made a difference in their community, school or elsewhere? You can now nominate them for an individual or group award. Nominations close on Friday 25th of January and nomination forms are available from your local Garda station or here.

 

The Link Between Difficult Childhood Events and Adult Sleep Quality

All adults aged over 18 years of age are invited to take part in this study which hopes to develop our understanding of the factors that play a part in how people manage childhood stress and poor sleep in adulthood. The research has ethical approval from the NUIG Research Ethics Committee. Participation in the study involves completing a 25 minute online questionnaire.

This workshop will take participants through a lively, engaged process looking at how racism functions, where it came from and what we can do to build a more equal society, locally and globally. Previous participants have described the workshop as “thought provoking” “a total eye-opener” and “inspiring”. Postgraduate Election – Nominations Open

Nominations are open for the Election of a Postgraduate Student as a member of Údarás na hOllscoile for the period February 1, 2019 – January 31, 2020. Nominations must be received in writing (or by email to Runai@nuigalway.ie) by the Returning Officer (Gearóid Ó Conluain, Room A131, Quadrangle) by 12pm on Wednesday 23rd January 2019. Údarás na hOllscoile, the University’s governing authority, is responsible for managing and controlling all of the affairs of the University.

The Examinations Office releases official examination results only and is not involved in the release of any provisional results. Provisional results may be released locally by Schools/Colleges via Blackboard Grade Centre. Students are advised to check Blackboard for information about provisional result release dates in the first instance or contact your College/School Office

Mikkeller Running Club

Mikkeller Running Club is a new FREE Galway social running club that meets at 12.30pm on the 2nd Sunday of every month for a relaxed jog/run from the Salthouse along the Prom in Salthill. You can choose to do 5, 8 or 10kms at an easy pace whilst chatting to new friends. The run ends at the Salthouse where you get a free beer to reward your efforts! All welcome this Sunday 13th of January.

IT Sligo will be hosting #HackAccessSligo Friday 15th and Saturday 16th Feburary. The aim of the event is to find innovative solutions to accessibility challenges by creating a more diverse, open and engaging environment for everyone who lives in the North West.The event will run from 5 pm Friday evening to Saturday evening where participants will be presented with challenges that exclude people with disabilities from society, which they will attempt to ‘hack’. There will be mentors on hand to support the teams and each team will present their idea to a panel on the final day. Winners will be awarded a cash prize. National Be Safe Be Seen Day TOMORROW

‘National Be Safe Be Seen Day’, is being held on the shortest and darkest day of the year, tomorrow Friday 21st December, 2018. FREE high visibility vests are available now from the SU Office and the SU Engineering Desk while stocks last. ‘Be Safe, Be Seen Day’ reminds all road users of the importance of wearing high visibility material when out walking, cycling or motorcycling throughout the year, but especially on the shortest day of the year and during the winter months.

Don’t get a nasty fine over the Christmas – check the expiry date on your Student Leap Card now. If it’s expiring apply online now for your new one and call in to the SU Office with your code so we can print your new one. The SU Office is closing for the Christmas break Fri 21st Dec to Mon 7th Jan. You can now also top up your Leap Card in the SU office – put credit on your card or add a monthly or weekly student bus ticket and we don’t charge commission!

NUI Galway Students’ Union Presents Neil Delamere & Gearóid Farrelly

Our €5 comedy gigs continue at 8pm on Monday 18th of February 2019 with Neil Delamere and Gearóid Farrelly in the O’Flaherty Theatre.

€5 tickets go on sale from the SU Office at 10am on Monday 7th of January 2019 and the SU Engineering Desk at 10am on Monday 14th of January 2019.

Neil Delamere is one of the top acts working in the comedy scene today, having presented Neil Delamere’s Just For Laughs and Republic of Telly as well as featuring on Michael McIntyre’s Comedy Roadshow, Stand Up For The Week and Comedy Central at the Comedy Store. He is known to Irish audiences for his appearances on RTE’s The Panel and BBC’s The Blame Game. He wrote and presented the series of documentaries Holding Out for A Hero for RTE, which garnered an Irish Film and Television Award. He recently starred in the hit BBC Northern Ireland series Soft Border Patrol.

Gearóid Farrelly
Gearóid Farelly is a polished live performer. He is a regular at Irish festivals including Vodafone Comedy Festival, Kilkenny Cat Laughs, Electric Picnic, Halloween Howls, Galway Comedy Festival and is a regular touring support to some of the comedy’s top names including the late Joan Rivers in Dublin and the UK. His comedy career got off to a flying start in 2008, when in the space of a few short weeks he was a finalist in the prestigious So You Think You’re Funny? competition at the Edinburgh Festival and winner of Bulmers Nuthin Butt Funny Newcomer competition at the Bulmers Festival in Dublin. His stand-up appearances for television include Stand & Deliver, The Panel, Tonight With Craig Doyle and Dave’s One Night Stand. Gearóid is probably best known for playing PJ Gallagher’s conjoined-twin in Meet Your Neighbours. On radio he has a weekly slot with Neil Delamere on Today FM.

NUI Galway Students’ Union Presents: David O’Doherty

We are delighted to welcome back David O’Doherty to NUI Galway at 8pm on Monday 28th of January 2019 in the O’Flaherty Theatre, NUI Galway. Tickets are just €5 and all proceeds to go the SU Charities Galway RCC and COPE Galway

Tickets go on sale from the SU Office at 10am on Monday 7th of January 2019 and the SU Engineering Desk at 10am on Monday 14th of January 2019.

David O’Doherty is an award-winning comedian, author and musician. First nominated for best newcomer in 2000 for his show The Story of the Boy Who Saved Comedy, David went on to win the main Edinburgh Comedy Award in 2008 for Let’s Comedy. He has returned to the festival every year since then, receiving widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics. He has also toured the UK and Ireland a number of times. David’s television credits include The Modest Adventures of David O’Doherty (RTÉ), Live at the Apollo (BBC 2), 8 Out Of 10 Cats Does Countdown (Channel 4). He has also previously been a guest on and hosted Never Mind The Buzzcocks and made appearances on shows such as QI, Dave’s One Night Stand, Would I Lie To You? and Have I Got News For You.

David is also a successful author. He published his first book, a children’s title called Ronan Long Gets It Wrong, in 2000. His next two books were the “wonderfully daft” (The Big Issue) 100 Facts About Pandas and 100 Facts About Sharks, written in conjunction with Mike Ahern and Claudia O’Doherty. He wrote another children’s title called Danger Is Everywhere in 2014 and this was followed up by sequel Danger Is Still Everywhere, which was nominated for the Scholastic Laugh Out Loud Book Award 2016. A third instalment, Danger Really Is Everywhere: SCHOOL OF DANGER, was released in October 2016.

Don’t get a nasty fine over the Christmas – check the expiry date on your Student Leap Card now. If it’s expiring apply online now for your new one and call in to the SU Office with your code so we can print your new one. The SU Office is closing for the Christmas break Fri 21st Dec to Mon 7th Jan. You can now also top up your Leap Card in the SU office – put credit on your card or add a monthly or weekly student bus ticket and we don’t charge commission!

The Union of Students in Ireland invites Postgraduate Research Students to participate in the National Postgraduate Living and Working Conditions Survey.

This survey aims to explore the experiences of postgraduate students in Ireland, in particular in relation to income and living standards. This survey is intended to form the basis for a campaign to be rolled out by USI and SIPTU.

We want to hear from you! This survey takes approximately 5 minutes to complete and will give your National Union the data we need to advocate for improved working and living standards! The Survey is available here

Exam Results

The Examinations Office releases official examination results only and is not involved in the release of any provisional results. Provisional results may be released locally by Schools/Colleges via Blackboard Grade Centre. Students are advised to check Blackboard for information about provisional result release dates in the first instance or contact your College/School Office

Top-up your Student Leap Card at the Students’ Union

You can now top-up your Student Leap Card at the NUI Galway Students’ Union office!

Please note all the below fares are the Student rates for the Student Leap Card only.

To obtain your Student Leap Card:

  1. Go to studentleapcard.ie and complete the online application.
  2. Bring the order confirmation code to the SU office along with your Student ID or a letter from your School/College and we can print the card off for you. Please note the code expires after 7 days.
  3. The Student Leap Card costs €10 and doesn’t have any credit on it.

There are two options for topping up your Leap Card with credit in the SU Office and we don’t charge any commission! 

Option 1: Pay-as-you-go

If you are looking to use the pay-as-you-go option you can top up your Student Leap Card with Travel Credit to the value of your choice. The fare when using the pay-as-you-go on Bus Éireann would be €1.68 a trip for bus trips in 01-11 stages and €1.98 for the 12+ stages.

Option 2: Load a ticket onto your Card

For Bus Éireann you have three options of tickets which can be loaded to your Leap Card:

  • 24 Hour – €4
  • 7 day – €16.80
  • Monthly – €59.50 (The monthly ticket is done by calendar month e.g. 1st January to 31st January)

For City Direct there is only the option of the Monthly Ticket:

  • Monthly – €50

The Students’ Union Office is located upstairs in the Áras na Mac Léinn building (beside Sult) and we are open 10am-5pm Monday-Friday during term time.
