Rally in Support of Mduduzi Creative Ngwenya 1pm TODAY

We invite you to attend a rally in support of NUI Galway student Mduduze Creative Ngwenya at 1pm today Thurs 13th Feb at the Big Yellow Thing. Science student Mduduzi is from Zimbabwe and has been living in Direct Provision in Galway for the last 3 years. He is now facing deportation. Mduduzi is on the committee for the University of Sanctuary at NUIG. He is a talented, hard-working and socially conscious individual who has made a huge effort to integrate and engage with the community in Galway #SaveMdu

ALIVE is hosting an SDG Workshop free for all students to attend –Exploring Financial Justice – What are the SDGs? What do we mean by Financial Justice? Why is there poverty in some parts of the world and not others? 5pm-7pm Tues 18th Feb with Financial Justice Ireland in the Careers Seminar Room.

Rave for the Reef

Rave for the Reef is back at 8.30pm on Weds 19th of Feb in the Roisin Dubh. For every €50 euro we raise 1 coral can be planted and raised by the Reef Restoration Foundation. These scientists are currently working in the Great Barrier Reef trying to stop the coral bleaching epidemic, which is a major cause of climate change. The Prevalence, Perception and Adherence of Alternative Dietary Lifestyles in College Students

  • All Day look out for our volunteers giving out free Condoms and Lube across campus
  • 12pm-2pm “Loving Your Sexual Body” free talk with Anna Keogh in The View
  • 2pm-4pm Bra Collection at Smokey’s Café with BioMed Soc. Donate old bras to charity. In some developing countries wearing a bra is a symbol of wealth, status and power and will protect young women from sexual abuse. Most charity shops won’t accept donations of bras so this is a sustainable way to find a new home for old bras whilst helping women in need.

Disclosure Training – Limited Spaces Left

We have just a few spaces left for our Disclosure Training 10am-1.30pm next Tues 11th Feb with Galway Rape Crisis Centre. The course cost is €10 and you can sign up in the SU Office or phone 091 493 570. This course provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence, in settings where this is likely to occur.

Climate Strike: Fridays For Future TOMORROW

This Climate Strike is a pre-election protest lead by the Fridays for Future campaign. We will be meeting outside Sult at 12:30pm and then marching to Eyre Square where we will hold the strike from 1pm to 3:30pm. Update on Postgraduate Election to Údarás na hOllscoile

Following the voting process for a Postgraduate Student to Údarás na hOllscoile on 29th January, 2020 the voting result was inconclusive. Therefore, the voting process will be re-run. Voting will take place 10am-9pm on Tues 11th Feb on the Concourse for the following candidates:

Please note: You must present a valid Student ID in order to vote. All previous votes have expired. Only Postgraduate taught and research students are eligible to vote

This study is a 10 minute survey interested in looking at how our ability to control our emotions can impact on different aspects of our wellbeing such as stress and anxiety. It is also looking at the causes of our ability to regulate our emotions such as our attachment style.

Students’ Union Organise GE2020 Information Day

Students’ Union Organise GE2020 Information Day

NUI Galway Students’ Union will be hosting two major events on Tuesday 4th of February to help their 19,000 student members to decide who to vote for in the General Election on the 8th of February.

The first event is a live broadcast of the Moncrieff show on Newstalk FM from campus. The live student audience will be voicing their concerns about climate change and what they think politicians should be doing about it. This event is a collaboration with SpunOut.ie, NYCI and USI taking place 1.30pm-4pm in The View in Áras na Mac Léinn. Free tickets are available here.

The second event will see a hustings of the Galway election candidates where students can discuss their party’s policies on housing, healthcare, education, transport, work, direct provision and public services. This event is in collaboration with ONE Galway and GMIT Students’ Union and will take place from 7.30pm in the Kirwan Theatre. Free tickets are available here.

Students’ Union President Clare Austick said: “We have registered thousands of NUI Galway students to vote again this year and we want them to be as informed as possible when they go to vote on the 8th of February. Our student members are more engaged than ever and are adamant that the next Government address their concerns regarding accommodation, funding for education, climate change, healthcare and direct provision.”

LIFT Training Registration Open – Starts Tomorrow!  

LIFT stands for Leading Ireland’s Future Together and the aim of LIFT is to build a better Ireland by developing leaders of character across our country. We will again be holding 8 weeks of LIFT roundtables in the SU starting Fri 31st Jan. Each weeks session will start at 3pm and last 30-45 minutes. This Sat 1st of Feb at 1pm people are asked to gather at the Spanish Arch and walk to Eyre Square for a cultural event to celebrate the love, joy and wealth of talent that Theo Ndlovu, Mduduzi Creative, and the community of people seeking asylum as a whole have brought to Galway. Theo and Mduduzi have contributed so much to community development in Galway since they arrived 3 years ago. Yet they now both face the threat of deportation.

Transition to Employment is a series of events for students with a disability or who experience anxiety, stress, depression or other mental health challenges. It is run by the Career Development Centre and will take place in the Careers Seminar Room. All welcome.

FREE MMR Booster vaccination dose NOW available from Student Health Unit

Owing to the current national Mumps outbreak, which has been running since late 2018, causing over 3,500 cases of Mumps, and with over 250 cases already diagnosed so far this year, the HSE Dept of Public Health have announced the provision of a FREE MMR Booster vaccination dose. This MMR booster is recommended for any students aged up to 30 years old, who either cannot confirm or are unsure as to whether they previously received the standard recommended 2 doses of MMR vaccination. Should any student require and wish to avail of this FREE MMR Booster vaccination from the NUIG Student Health Unit service, then they should either call in to reception or phone 091-494 337 to book an appointment.

LIFT Ireland is a non-profit initiative that aims to increase the level of positive leadership capabilities in Ireland. Thinking about a postgraduate course?

The NUI Galway Postgraduate Open Day will take place 12pm-3pm Tuesday, 4th February in the Bailey Allen Hall. Short presentations will take place during the day, covering such topics as funding opportunities, applications, and research. There will be over 100 stands on display, so this is your opportunity to meet lecturers and postgraduate students, see what postgraduate programmes are on offer, and to meet staff from Postgraduate Admissions, Career Development Centre, Graduate Studies, Fees Office, and other student support services. Údaras na hOllscoile is the governing authority of NUI Galway. Nominations are now open for a postgraduate student to become a member of Údarás and nominations close at 12pm on Thurs 23rd of Jan. Nomination forms are available here.

EYE2020 registration now open

Thousands of young Europeans will gather in Strasbourg on 29-30 May 2020 at EYE 2020 (European Youth Event) to meet and inspire other young Europeans and exchange views with experts, activists, influencers and decision-makers right in the heart of European democracy. Notice of Referendum on Restructuring Students’ Union Officer Roles

Over the course of the last semester the Students’ Union continued the constitutional review work which was initiated the previous year. The main focus was placed on the structure of the Executive Committee and its functionality. On the 25th of November, Students’ Union Council had their say on the proposal for an amended Executive Committee structure. Class Reps voted in favour of the proposal to bring to students to vote on. 500 signatures have been collected in the meantime and a referendum will be held on Thursday 23rd January for you to vote and have your say.

Postgrad International Student Coffee Morning and Panel

International students often struggle to navigate the bureaucracy in a new country. Come and ask all your questions to a panel of international postgrads, who are here to help! Current postgrads are also welcome – there will be a coffee session afterwards to share experiences and meet other international students from other colleges. The event takes place 11am-1pm Thursday 16th of January in The Space upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn.

 

Women’s Self Defence & Mindfulness Class

Chen Tai Chi are offering a special student rate of just €10 per class for their Women’s Self Defence & Mindfulness through Tai Chi course this January. Classes start Tues 28th Jan at 7.45pm at Galway Rowing Club.

Galway DARE and HEAR Application Information Session

DARE is a third level alternative admissions scheme for school-leavers whose disabilities have had a negative impact on their second level education.

HEAR is a college and university scheme which offers places on reduced points and extra college support to school-leavers from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds who are resident in the Republic of Ireland.The Galway DARE and HEAR Application Information Sessions take place 10am-2pm this Sat 11th Jan in the Institute for Lifecourse and Society (ILAS), NUI Galway,
