NUI Galway Students’ Union Outraged by University Foundation’s Wasteful Spending

News & Events

NUI Galway Students’ Union Outraged by University Foundation’s Wasteful Spending

NUI Galway Students’ Union is outraged and condemns the University Foundation’s wasteful and frivolous spending which came to light following an investigation by the Charities Regulator. The Foundation Office is charged with raising money for the University from philanthropic sources and also from the Alumni Fund. Graduates are encouraged to make regular donations with the assurance that donations are used for scholarships and to enable students who are facing crisis or financial hardship to remain at University. The mission ‘to transform the lives of students and support research that enhances the lives of people across the globe’ has not been strictly adhered to. The revelations that huge sums including €30,000 on taxi trips, with the majority being return journeys from Galway to Dublin, €48,000 on business class flights, on average €385 a night in a mix of four and five star hotels, €61,000 on Galway races tickets and €10,000 on international Ireland rugby matches, has evoked feelings of anger and disgust.

Clare Austick, Students’ Union President said: “We expect better from an institution like NUI Galway that should be setting an example of good corporate governance and efficient management of resources. Instead, we see money that could have been used to support vulnerable students being spent on business class flights to five star hotels. This week students sitting exams have to pay for transport to off campus exam centres which should be provided by the university. For commuting students, and students not familiar with the city, this is an added source of stress, and they don’t have the luxury of personalised transport to ‘ensure they are not tired and can give their best’. The University needs to take action to reassure its many donors that their money is being used for the purposes it was donated. We are asking for a commitment from the university that this will not happen again by allowing a student representative to oversee the accounts of the board.”

Survey on Two-Factor Authentication

I am conducting an anonymous survey on the usability of Two-Factor Authentication. Two-Factor Authentication/Multi-Factor Authentication is a second method, in addition to a user entering a password, that is used to gain access into an account. It is used as an additional layer of security. From this survey I hope to gather and evaluate the results so I can gain further understanding into what Two-Factor Authentication methods are the most and least usable and why. There will be no personal data kept in this survey and it only takes 5 minutes. Complete the survey here.

Students’ Union Work Towards Sustainable Campus

News & Events

Students’ Union Work Towards Sustainable Campus

NUI Galway Students’ Union this week distributed over 3,000 free Keep Cups to students as part of their Wind Down Week events. Each student receiving a Keep Cup signed a sustainability pledge showing their commitment to adopting more environmentally friendly lifestyle choices. Keep Cups are the world’s first barista standard reusable coffee cup.

For over 10 years the Students’ Union has been offering a discount of 10 cents on hot drinks in the SU outlets (Sult, Smokey’s Café, The Wall Café and the SU Shop) at NUIG where customers bring their own reusable mug. The free Keep Cup initiative aims to encourage even more students to get into the habit of saving money, and the environment, every day.

Clare Austick, Students’ Union President said: “One of the major concerns among our students is climate change. NUIG students have been very involved in our sustainability working group this year and were eager to sign the sustainability pledge. We received funding for the Keep Cups from the NUI Galway Student Projects Fund and are delighted with the positive response to them. They can already be seen in use across NUIG and this is a great step towards creating a more environmentally responsible campus.”

  • 3pm-4.30pm Colouring! Take a break and drop in to the Art Room and Hub Central for some colouring in + sweets!

Here’s our top 10 tips for the exams:

  1. Check, double check and triple check your timetable NOW! Every year we have students who read their timetable wrong and end up missing an exam – don’t be that guy!
  2. Find your College ID and bring it with you to every exam. If you have lost it call to the Student Registry Helpdesk to get a new one for €20. You will be fined €30 if you don’t have your ID with you.
  3. Plan how you are getting to the exams NOW and set all your alarms. You need to be there 20 minutes prior to the start of the examination. City Direct are running a direct bus each day to the Salthill exam venues and it’s €2 per journey.
  4. Leave your phone at home – it’s a €20 fine for bringing your phone to the exam AND other penalties can include mark reduction and getting zero marks for the module.
  5. WASH! If you even have your shopping list written on your hand scrub it off. If you have any writing on your body, no matter how unrelated to the exam, you’ll fail the exam.
  6. Follow the directions of the Exam Invigilators at all times.
  7. If you need advice on deferring your exams please contact the SU Education Officer or your College Office.
  8. You can’t bring in pencil cases, glasses cases or calculator covers to the exam.
  9. You can’t leave the Exam Venue for the first hour or the last 30 mins of the exam
  10. Relax – you got this!

Tips for Looking After Yourself During Exams

  1. Don’t isolate yourself
Exam time can be very lonely as people go off studying on their own. Try to make a conscious effort to meet up with friends, or plan something nice at the end of a day of study with others. Socialising with others is crucial around this time. Cutting yourself off from the world is not a good idea.
  2. Don’t be a hero
Surviving on 2 hours sleep and 7 cans of red bull is not the way the human body was meant to function. Schedule in some sanity breaks and exercise during your day – a 30 minute walk can work wonders.
  3. Eat regularly
You don’t have to eat like a nutritionist, but eating three meals a day and getting in some healthy snacks will keep you on track. Food fuels your body, so if you’re constantly eating junk you won’t feel great.
  4. Sleep regularly
Many people completely change their sleep patterns during exam time. If you can, try to fit in 7-8 hours’ sleep and follow a routine. It will help you when exams start.
  5. Stay hydrated
    Water is your friend!
  6. Talk to friends and look out for each other
You might notice some friends or classmates struggling at this time. Maybe they need to be pointed in the direction of one of the support services listed below.
  7. Ask for help if you need it
    Student Health Unit
    NUIG Counselling Service
    Chaplains
    SU Education Officer
    SU Welfare & Equality Officer
