NUIG’s Second Climate Congress: Climate Change & Ireland Tues 5th April 11.30am-5pm
We will have three interesting speakers, and some short Ignite presentations of postgraduate students from all over Ireland presenting their work.
Speakers on the event are: Professor Peadar Kirby, Professor Emeritus of International Politics and Public Policy, University of Limerick; Emer Cosgrove, Climate Leader with Al Gore’s Climate Reality Project; and James Nix, Director of Brussels-based non-profit Green Budget Europe.
The event is free to attend for everyone interested and lunch will be served, but registration in advance is requested at https://tinyurl.com/jhlhvpb. The event will run from 11:30-17:00 on Tuesday 5th April in The View upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn.

Under Pressure – Blood Pressure Screening 10am-2pm Weds 6th April
A free blood pressure screening day will be taking place on Wednesday April 6th from 10am-2pm on the first floor of the Hardiman Building. We are a group of second year Biomedical Science students and are organising this event in association with Croí, to raise awareness about high blood pressure, the work of Croí in the community and the importance of knowing your blood pressure.
Come along on the day to this FREE event to get your blood pressure measured. There will be raffle prizes on the day to thank you for your participation in our project.
The Fulbright Awards allow you to study, research or teach in the US. There will be an information session on the awards at 2pm on Wednesday 6th April in THB G010 James Hardiman Library.

PhD Write Up Bursaries
A limited number of write-up bursaries are being offered to address the problems being encountered by PhD students who are near to completing their theses yet who find themselves, for whatever reason, without funding. These write-up bursaries will be tenable for up to a three-month period and will be worth €1,000 per month.
Completed applications (application form and form B) must be received by the College office on or before 17:00 Friday, 29 April 2016.
NUI Galway Climate Congress 2016 Speakers Needed
This year we are hosting a competition for postgraduate and early stage researchers to showcase their research. Instead of a boring poster or long, drawn-out talk we want you to give an Ignite talk.
An Ignite talk consists of 20 slides, the slides automatically advance every 15 seconds meaning you have 5 minutes to present your research!
The theme for the Ignite talk is “New voices in Climate Change research”.
The prize for the best talk will be a certificate of your achievement plus €100! If you wish to enter please send a brief outline of your research plus the topic of your presentation to ccafs@socs.nuigalway.ie. The deadline for submission is 20/03/16 and applicants will be notified of their acceptance on 23/03/16.

Common Suspicious Thoughts Research Study
My name is Meagan Lynch and I am a final year student in the School of Psychology. As part of my final year research project I am examining how people respond to common suspicious thoughts. I’m inviting all students in NUI Galway to take part as I need responses from a wide range of people.

The Brain Café: NUI Galway’s Second Annual Undergraduate Research Conference
Everyone excited? Only one week left until the Conference. We are looking forward to meeting all students who have been working hard on their wonderful research ideas that will be shared next Wednesday, the 23rd of March. Those who are still undecided, we hope you have been encouraged by the extended date for the submission of the abstracts, which is now Friday, the 18th of March. Also, those of you who are thinking of attending without presenting, please come along to support your fellow students from across a range of disciplines and get immersed in a well of inspiration, brainstorming, and researching.

#NUIGSU16 Election Results so far
Congratulations to the newly elected NUI Galway Students’ Union Sabbatical officers who will take up office on the 1st of July. They are: President Jimmy McGovern, Vice-President/Education Officer Cathal Sherlock and Vice-President/Welfare Officer Daniel Khan. Aaron Reeves was also elected as your SU Council Chair for the year ahead. The students of NUI Galway also voted that the Students’ Union will now actively support the decriminalisation of drugs solely for personal use. The students of NUI Galway also voted that the Students’ Union will now condemn the direct provision system which is inhumane and denies asylum seekers their basic rights and call for its abolition and replacement with a system which respects the human rights of asylum seekers. In line with policy supported by the Migrant Rights Centre and other concerned NGOs.

The Crisis of Mental Health in Ireland: It’s time for radical change
At 7pm on Wednesday 23rd March, NUI Galway will be delighted to welcome Niall Breslin, better known as ‘Bressie’, and Dr Paul D’Alton, Clinical Psychologist to discuss current challenges and the future of mental health in Ireland. The event will be chaired by Dr Jonathan Egan, School of Psychology, NUIG and is free of charge.

The Brain Café: NUI Galway’s Second Annual Undergraduate Research Conference
Only two weeks left until the Conference! The date is fast approaching and we are getting very excited about all the fantastic research ideas that will be shared on the day. Come along and explore research skills from all disciplines as well as meeting like-minded people to get inspired. For those of you thinking of presenting we have extended our deadline for submitting abstracts to next Friday, 18th of March.
We believe that everyone can make a change; it depends on your motivation and the hard work that you put behind your unique ideas. The following will be closed on Saint Patrick’s Day Thursday 17th of March:

The Wall Café will be open with reduced hours 10:00-15:00. The Reading Room will be open as usual.
The SU Cloakroom and the SU Engineering Desk will both close on Wednesday 16th March and reopen on Monday 4th April after St. Patrick’s Day & Easter.

Repeat Exam Fee Increase Update
Following the SU Council meeting on Monday night the Students’ Union opposes the increase in the repeat exam fees as circulated by Mary Dooley last Thursday. The Students’ Union will lobby for a reverse of this fee and for a pay per module scheme with a cap of the original fee of €195. This is “in line” with other Irish universities.

Our last NUI Galway Students’ Union comedy gig is Kevin McGahern (Republic of Telly, Hardy Bucks) and Fred Cooke (The Fear) at 8pm on Monday 7th of March in the O’Flaherty Theatre. On the 35th anniversary of the Republican Hunger Strike of 1981, Laurence McKeown – Irish author, playwright, screenwriter, and former volunteer in the IRA, who took part to the 1981 Hunger Strike, will be interviewed by Doctor Niall Ó Dochartaigh. The discussion will be around the theme of memory, commemoration and the legacy of the past.

Community Attitude Survey
We are second year Biomedical Science students in NUIG. We would be very grateful if you could fill out our survey. We are hoping to analyse community attitudes towards mental health as part of a Community Knowledge Initiative (CKI) project in conjunction with the charity Positive Mental Health. This survey is short and completely anonymous so please answer the questions honestly. Any feedback is greatly appreciated.
Please Note: throughout this survey questions will reference “mental illness”, this refers to any type of Mental Health issue.

Male Students under 25 Required for Study
I am conducting research as part of my final year Psychology degree and wish to invite all male students under the age of 25 who currently hold a driver’s licence to take part in a study “Examining driving behaviour in a simulated environment” The study takes place in the Psychology building and shouldn’t last longer than 40 minutes.
Students who take part will receive a free €5 voucher for An Bhialann and will get to experience driving in the Psychology department’s state of the art driving simulator!

Workbench Galway, a free, drop in co-working space is located on the 1st floor of the Bank of Ireland in Mainguard Street, Galway. Workbench Galway offers state of the art workspace facilities including a free co-working space for up to 12 start-up businesses which is open 9am–5pm Monday–Wednesday, and 9am–8pm Thursday and Fridays. It has free WiFi, coffee and tea for anyone using the space.
Startups can also make use of the workbench for meetings and breakout sessions with two meeting rooms, a boardroom and an informal seating area with screens that can be used for presentations or utilised as a marketing tool to promote upcoming events. Other services offered to businesses from Workbench Galway include space to exhibit and present products from or to hold private client or staff meetings and the area is also available for businesses to hold breakfast or evening events from.
