Saint Patrick’s Day Bank Holiday

The following will be closed on Saint Patrick’s Day Friday 17th of March:

The SU Office, the Library, the Academic Writing Centre, the SU Cloakroom, the SU Engineering Desk, the SU Shop, the Student Health Unit, Sult, Caife na Gaeilge, and Smokey’s Café.

The Wall Café will be open with reduced hours 11:00-15:00. The Reading Room will be open as usual.

Benefit Concert for Five Female Lecturers High Court Case against NUI Galway – Wednesday 29th March, Black Box, Galway

The benefit concert will feature The Stunning along with My Fellow Sponges. The MC for the event will be comedian Tommy Tiernan, so expect the unexpected! You can buy special student rate tickets for €15 from the Students’ Union Office in Áras na Mac Léinn. The concert will be held Wednesday, March 29th, at The Black Box in Galway. The event will raise funds to support court cases filed by the 5 women lecturers at NUI Galway who are fighting for their right to be promoted.

Kickathon Tuesday 21st March

On Tuesday 21st March NUIG Muay Thai Club will be holding a Kickathon to support the kids of the temple of the Golden Horse, in northern Thailand. The monk Khru Bah, ex Muay Thai professional fighter, dedicates his life on helping the people in the surrounding villages and training orphans, caring that they all have enough to eat, a place to stay and a good education towards the Buddhist principles, horse keeping and Muay Thay.

You can support the event on Tuesday 21st March by attending the Bake Sale in Smokey’s Café 9am-4pm or by attending the club demonstration of 1,000 kicks 7.25pm-9.30pm in the Kingfisher. There’ll also be a DJ and other activities at the Kickathon.

Student Connect Mentor Positions now Recruiting

If you found student connect helpful when coming to NUIG last September why not give back by volunteering to be a mentor this year.  You can apply at: http://vovici.com/wsb.dll/s/2e2cg59ee6.  To be a mentor you need to attend a short training course.  You have the choice of attending on Wednesday 22nd March or Tuesday 28th March.

Student Connect is the only truly student led programme in the University.  It’s also the biggest club on campus so why not volunteer! Mentor Leaders and mentors arrange social events throughout the year for 1st years, inform 1st years of what’s happening on campus and make changes to the programme to meet the needs of first year students.

SU Elections #NUIGSU17

  • The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm this Monday 27th of February in IT250. Please note that only registered Class Reps can vote in this election.
  • Nominations are now closed for the 3 Full Time Paid SU Officer Positions of President, Vice President/Education Officer and Vice President/Welfare. The election takes place next Thursday 2nd of March with polling stations in An Bhialann (10am-7pm), Áras na Mac Léinn (11am-8pm), Engineering Building (12pm-4pm) and on the SU Website via Remote Vote 10am-8pm (pre-registration required before midnight Weds 1st March)
  • Nominations are now open for the 11 Voluntary SU Officer Positions of Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality, Societies, Clubs, Postgrad, Mature Students and the 5 College Convenors at and close at 5pm on Wednesday 1st of March. The election takes place on Thursday 9th of March.

#NUIGSU17 Remote Vote – Registration Open

If you are not on campus on Thursday 2nd March and wish to vote in the Students’ Union elections and referendum, you can use Remote Vote to cast your vote online.

It’s a simple two-step process:

  1. REGISTER Log on to the Students’ Union website before midnight on Wednesday 1st March and register for Remote Vote.
  2. VOTE Log on to the Students’ Union website between 10am and 8pm on Thursday 2nd March.

Remote Vote is easy to use and is completely confidential.

Referendum on NUI Galway Students’ Union’s position on reunification of the island of Ireland

On Thursday 2nd March you will be asked to vote in a referendum on whether or not the Students’ Union supports the reunification of the island of Ireland.

The wording which will appear on the ballot paper, requiring a Yes / No answer, will be:

Do you agree with the following proposition:

“That NUI Galway Students’ Union supports the reunification of the island of Ireland and calls on the State to hold a national referendum on the question of such reunification.”

This referendum has been requested by 500 members of the Students’ Union in accordance with the Students’ Union Constitution, Article 16.

Polling Stations will be open: 10am-7pm (An Bhialann), 11am-8pm (Áras na Mac Léinn), 12pm-4pm (Engineering Building), 10am-8pm (Online Remote Vote – registration required by midnight Weds 1st March)

CompSoc Camara Collection

CompSoc are running their monthly Camara Drop-off Point in 18 Distillery Road starting next Wednesday 1st March 2017 from 10am to 2pm. They are also looking for volunteers to help out for an hour between 10am and 2pm. All computers, laptops, monitors, servers and keyboard donations are welcome. They are then sent to Dublin to be wiped to military standards before being sent to schools in Africa. We are unable to accept printers, CRT monitors, switches or projectors.

Arts in Action presents In Illo Tempore’.

FREE event 1pm-2pm Thursday March 2nd in the Cube Theatre – Áras Na Mac Léinn. In Illo Tempore are a band of Fado  student singers from the Coimbra University in Portugal. Fado music originates from Lisbon and can be traced back to the 1820s. It has a long and rich heritage. Survey: The Association between alcohol induced falls, related injuries and occupational dysfunction among Irish university students – a cross sectional study 

I am a final year Occupational Therapy student, as part of my final year research I am inviting NUIG students who have experienced a fall or fall-related injury whilst under the influence of alcohol to complete a questionnaire.  Anyone over the age 18 who has experienced a fall whilst under the influence of alcohol is invited to take part. SHAG (Sexual Health Awareness and Guidance) Week 2017

10am-1.30pm Disclosure Training with Galway Rape Crisis Centre. This training is designed to increase awareness of the causes and effects of sexual violence and give participants an opportunity to practice scenarios involving a disclosure of sexual violence. Upcoming SU Workshops & Courses

  1. Disclosure Training 10am-1.30pm Monday 6th of February. FREE course with Galway Rape Crisis Centre. 1 Space Available. Provides participants with the skills and knowledge to deal appropriately with a disclosure of sexual violence. 5 CPD points per training – these are through the Irish Association of Counselling & Psychotherapy.
  2. Smart Consent Workshop 12pm-2pm Thursday 9th of February. FREE Course. Limited Spaces. A workshop where students explore what consent means in a fun environment. You are never asked about your own sexual history or experiences. Facilitators use their research findings to present scenarios and involve you in activities, to raise your awareness of what consent means to you.
  3. Occupational First Aid 3 day course 9am-5pm Friday 10th, 17th and 24th of February. €100 (usual cost €160) FETAC Level 5 course.
  4. Cardiac First Responder Course 9am-1pm Friday 3rd March €40 (usual cost €75). ONE space left.

  • Nominations open for the SU Council Chairperson at 10am on Monday 13th of February and close at 5pm on Monday 20th of February. The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm on Monday 27th of February. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.
  • Nominations open for the 3 Full Time Paid SU Officer Positions of President, Vice President/Education Officer and Vice President/Welfare Officer at 10am on Thursday 16th of February and close at 5pm on Wednesday 22nd of February. The election takes place on Thursday 2nd of March.
  • Nominations open for the 11 Voluntary SU Officer Positions of Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality, Societies, Clubs, Postgrad, Mature Students and the 5 College Convenors at 10am on Thursday 23rd of March and close at 5pm on Wednesday 1st of March. The election takes place on Thursday 9th of March.

Stock School Book Launch

On Wednesday, February 8th final year B. Comm student Jason Walsh launches his first book, ‘Stock School, A Colour Coded Guide To Financial Trading & Investing.’ The launch takes place in the library lobby at 4pm. The book, goes into greater detail than is covered in the Stock School lectures, which Jason has been teaching in NUIG since September 2015 as part of the Entrepreneurship Society events. The book launch is followed at 6pm with a trading workshop in AC 201 hosted by Dublin trading firm Positive Equity. There will be catering at both events and all students are welcome to attend either or both events. More information.
