SU Elections #NUIGSU17

  • Nominations open for the SU Council Chairperson at 10am on Monday 13th of February and close at 5pm on Monday 20th of February. The SU Council Chairperson will be elected at the last SU Council meeting of the year at 6pm on Monday 27th of February. Please note that only registered Class Reps can run for, nominate and vote in this election.
  • Nominations open for the 3 Full Time Paid SU Officer Positions of President, Vice President/Education Officer and Vice President/Welfare Officer at 10am on Thursday 16th of February and close at 5pm on Wednesday 22nd of February. The election takes place on Thursday 2nd of March.
  • Nominations open for the 11 Voluntary SU Officer Positions of Oifigeach na Gaeilge, Equality, Societies, Clubs, Postgrad, Mature Students and the 5 College Convenors at 10am on Thursday 23rd of February and close at 5pm on Wednesday 1st of March. The election takes place on Thursday 9th of March.

Reminder: Consumption of Alcohol in Public Places

The new Galway Bye-laws on consumption of alcohol in public places means that the Gardaí can issue a €100 on the spot fine if they catch you drinking in the streets.
This goes up to €200 if not paid within 21 days and if you don’t pay in 56 days you can end up in court facing a charge of €1,500. Don’t take the risk.

You can drop in to the AWC to get FREE help with all aspects of essay writing including the writing process (and writer’s block), essay structure, punctuation, using secondary sources and avoiding plagiarism.

New Agony Aunt Show starts Thursday 9th February 12 pm on Flirt FM 101.3 and www.flirtfm.ie

Need some advice?  Flirt FM 101.3 is here to help. Our agony aunt Josephine O Halloran is a counsellor, psychotherapist and relationship counsellor with over 20 years’ experience. She works with individuals and couples, covering issues such as anxiety, depression, bullying, abuse and relationship issues including. Each Thursday from midday she will be answering your questions and giving advice on different topics relevant to students ranging from exam stress to sexual health and wellbeing, as well as speaking to expert guests about various therapies available. If you have a problem you would like advice of email in confidence to info@flirtfm.ie  with the subject ‘Agony Aunt’ or text 083 433 1013.

 

Iarnród Éireann and NUIG ID Cards

Remember because there are no expiry dates on NUI Galway ID cards Iarnród Éireann Irish Rail will only accept NUIG ID as proof of being a student 4 years from issue date i.e. if your ID starts with 14 (issued 2014) they will stop accepting it in 2018.

This is not great if you are doing a long course, took a year out or are back studying after break etc. BUT we are talking to the University about getting expiration dates on the ID cards again!

In the meantime we sell the Student Leap Card for €10 in the SU. They will take that as proof of your “studenthood”

 

The NUI Galway Presidential Award for Volunteering, the ALIVE Certificate can be yours!

Over the years many people in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon have either been directly or indirectly affected by suicide which has a devastating effect on families and the community.
Connecting for Life is Ireland’s national strategy to reduce suicide 2015 – 2020. The HSE, in partnership with community, voluntary and statutory organisations, is developing a Suicide Prevention Action Plan for Counties Galway, Mayo and Roscommon. We want as many people as possible to have their say about what should be included in this plan.

The Brain Café: NUI Galway’s Third Annual Undergraduate Research Conference – JOIN US!

This inspiring event will take place on the 4th of April in NUIG. Students of all faculties and disciplines, in any year, are encouraged to participate and get involved either through presenting your own research, attending the conference or by volunteering. FREE Cloakroom open TOMORROW

The SU FREE Cloakroom will be open on Fridays 9am-5pm during term time. The service is still free but will only be one day per week. Items must be removed at 5pm and we can’t take laptops. The SU Cloakroom is located in the library basement beside the Students’ Union XL Shop.

Oral Contraceptive Pill & Mobile Phone Intervention Research:

Postgraduate Psychology student looking for female participants in a short online survey. The research is investigating the use of smartphone applications and how they may be effective in reminding one to take their oral contraceptive pill. The SUSI Grant Application System will open on 23 April, 2015
SUSI will open its online grant application system for the 2015/16 academic year on Thursday, 23 April, 2015, two weeks earlier than last year.

Information on grant eligibility and how to apply is available at the SUSI website www.susi.ie 
Before making an application, students are encouraged to refer to the http://www.susi.ie/Should-I-apply/General-criteria.aspx. and to use the http://www.susi.ie/Should-I-apply/Eligibility-Reckoner.aspx provided on the SUSI website.

Want to earn €10? 

We are running a driving study using our brand new simulator all this week and next in the Arts Millennium Building Extension. It takes just under 1 hour to complete, and will involve a number of simple drives using the simulator and a few short questionnaires in between. You will receive €10 payment for taking part!

To do so, you need a full, Irish driving license, to be aged between 18-24, have insurance and use a smartphone. To arrange a time slot, please contact Aoife at a.kervick1@nuigalway.ie. Testing times in the evening and on weekends can also be arranged. Thank you!

The Ireland Funds Business Plan Competition invites university/college students and recent graduates from across Ireland and Northern Ireland to submit their business ideas for a chance to win up to €10,000, as well as mentoring and other supports for their business ideas. Applicants with existing start-up’s are eligible to enter, as long as the applicants themselves meet the above criteria.

Photo Competition

Fascination of Plants Day is a global initiative with events held in over 50 countries to promote the importance of plants at many levels. There will be a number of events in Ireland (see http://fascinationofplants.blogspot.ie for more details of events in Ireland) including a photo competition (there were over 360 submissions in 2013!). Entries are invited from anyone in Ireland (the winners will receive tickets to Bloom).

The Geec Launch 12pm-2pm Tues 21st April at Engineering Building

On 21 April, 2015, we will launch the Galway energy-efficient car – the Geec – nationally before we ship it to Rotterdam for Shell Eco-marathon Europe in May. Dr James Browne, President of NUI Galway, will join us as we unveil the new and improved Geec 1.1. We will present the engineering and driving team, reveal results of energy-efficiency testing, and share our enthusiasm for this project with anybody who would like to learn about it.

Finally, we will be taking the opportunity to say a big thank you to all of the technical and academic staff who helped with this, and all of our partners and supporters. We are delighted to let you know that Eoin McKeon, Connacht Rugby number 8, and recent NUIG Mechanical Engineering Graduate, will be unveiling the Geec at our launch. J.A.M forum is an online platform whereby international students and students interested in learning languages can interact and liaise with one another. It acts as an opportunity for students to arrange language lessons, as well as being a social outlet.

Semester 2 exams are scheduled for Monday, 27th April to Wednesday, 13th May 2015 (inclusive). Students are expected to be available for exams for the entire duration of the exam session.

2. Also check the Amendments webpage regularly as examination dates/times may change up to the day of your exam.

3. If your timetable is incorrect or you do not have a timetable, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions online before visiting the Student Information Desk in Áras Uí­ Chathail (Ground Floor).

If you have accessed your Timetable & you experience the following (1) cannot see your modules (2) some modules showing and other modules missing, please contact sid@nuigalway.ie with your missing modules I.e. course instance code, module code and student ID and we can schedule you for late entry seating or alternatively call in to SID Aras Ui Chathail between 9am-12:30pm & 2pm- 4 pm to be scheduled.
