Student Leap Card Machine Working!

Our Student Leap Card Machine is working again. If you need a new card don’t forget to apply online for your code first – this lasts 7 days – call in to us with the code, your ID and €10.

 

FREE STI Clinic

Remember that during term time you can book in to the Student Health Unit for a FREE STI test. Call 091 492 604 to make an appointment. You can also get free condoms in the SU Office and from the SU Engineering Desk.

 

SU Yoga Course Now Enrolling

We are now taking bookings for our next 8 week Ashtanga Yoga Course. The cost is €40 which can be paid in the SU Office or phone 091 493 570 to register with credit/debit card.

USA Summer Camp Information Session

Exam Timetables

Semester 1 (2018/2019) exams are scheduled for Monday, 10th December to Friday, 21st December 2018 (inclusive). Students are expected to be available for exams for the entire duration of the exam session. The Semester exam timetable will be published on Thursday, 15th November at 12:00. Please check your timetable carefully – if there are any subjects missing from your schedule contact the Student Information Desk IMMEDIATELY!

Join The NUIG Movember Team

Movember is a men’s health charity focused on the issues of prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health. Every year men across the globe grow moustaches in the month of November to raise money and awareness for these issues. To join the team or to donate follow this link.

Students from the M.Sc. in Health Economics need your help to look at the effects of alcohol consumption on students’ lives, mental health and college participation. Please complete the survey here.

 

Voter Registration Deadline Sunday 25th November

If on 15th February 2019 you are aged 18 or over please check that your name, address and other details are present and correct on the Draft Register of Electors. If there is a mistake tell your local Council before 25th November. Voter registration forms are available from the SU Office.

Migraine Info Stand 11am-2pm Thurs 8th Nov

The Migraine Association of Ireland (MAI) – Ireland’s only patient charity for migraine sufferers, supporting the estimated 500,000 sufferers in Ireland – will have an information stand at Smokey’s Café 11am-2pm Thursday 8th of November. Migraine is a recognized neurological condition and among the 500,000 sufferers in Ireland, there are an estimated 30,000 chronic sufferers who endure 15 or more migraine attacks per month.

Research shows that having a postgraduate course can increase your earning potential and that your career progression greatly increases after you obtain a postgrad qualification. Furthermore it can enhance your employability. Statistics from the Careers Service Graduate Destinations Report indicate that 64% of NUI Galway undergraduates are in employment nine months after graduation. This rises to 87% for postgraduates. Come along to find out about all the taught and research options on offer, including scholarships.

Applications Open for An Taisce Climate Ambassadors

If you’d like to learn more about climate change & communications, take action, share your experiences, and meet like-minded people while taking part in worthwhile events and having some fun, An Taisce want to hear from you! They have dedicated staff who will support you throughout your journey, provide training and organise various events throughout the year for you to attend and also share any of your events through their communication channels. Application deadline is Friday 9th November.

 

Christmas Decoration Competition

Galway City Council are running a competition asking you to make a Christmas decoration out of recycled material (egg shells, cardboard, newspapers, plastic bottles, milk cartons, old clothes etc.). Prizes include vouchers and the winning entry will hang on the Christmas tree in City Hall. The deadline for entries is Monday 3rd December. World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims

This year’s World Day of Remembrance Memorial Service will take place in the Clayton Hotel, Galway, at 2pm on Sunday the 18th of November. ’World Day of Remembrance for Road Traffic Victims’ gives us an opportunity to remember those who have died on our roads and the families, friends and communities who have been devastated by their loss and also we remember those who have survived with life altering injuries. For thousands of families around the country, their lives are forever changed as a result of a collision.

 

Milkyboy Kid at the Town Hall Theatre this Friday!

In this new one man show, award winning international choreographer and performer Luke Murphy enters the void and tries to fill the time. Through a mixture of storytelling, film and Murphy’s own virtuosic physicality “The Milkyboy Kid” examines relationships between who you are, who you want to be and who you pretend to be. Luke Murphy is also facilitating a workshop using adaptations of Stanislavski systems to confront physical and emotional states, to examine the relationship between movement, purpose and meaning for both the performer and audience.

NUI Galway Students’ Union presents comedians Alison Spittle and Kevin McGahern at 8pm this Monday 24th of September in the O’Flaherty Theatre. Tickets are €5 and are on sale now from the SU Office (Mon-Fri 10am-5pm).

 

SU Elections Update – How To Vote on Thursday

We will be holding our Elections next Thursday 27th of September 10am-6pm to elect the new SU Vice President/Education Officer and the first SU Ethnic Minorities Officer. You will be able to vote in Smokey’s Café and Áras na Mac Léinn just remember to bring your NUIG ID with you to vote.

If you won’t be on campus to vote on Thursday please register before midnight on Wednesday 26th of September for a Remote Vote via the Students’ Union website. Once you are registered you can then log on to the SU Website 10am-6pm Thursday 27th of September to vote.

Financial Aid Fund Applications are OPEN

The Financial Aid Fund is a scheme aimed at disadvantaged students who require financial support to enable them to fully benefit from their studies. Applications close at 12noon on Monday 1st of October. Apply online HERE. Please email financialaid@nuigalway.ie with any queries.

Apply online now for your shiny new Student Leap Card and upload your photo. You can then call to the Students’ Union office upstairs in Áras na Mac Léinn between 10am and 5pm Monday to Friday with your code, your ID and €10 to collect your card. These are valid until the 31st of December 2019.

Every class is entitled to a Class Representative to represent their class. If your class does not have a Class Rep your voice will not be heard. If you have any questions on the roles and responsibilities of a Class Rep contact the SU on studentsunion@nuigalway.ie . Bus To March For Choice

We are organising a bus to the National March for Choice in Dublin on Saturday 29th of September. Return bus tickets are €2 and are available from the SU Office. NUIG student ID required. Sustainability Showcase

NUI Galway are hosting a sustainability showcase event in the O’Donoghue Theatre on Wednesday September 26th called Our Sustainability Journey.  The event will share sustainability related research taking place on the NUI Galway campus in a relevant and accessible way and demonstrate the relevance of sustainability in everyday living.  This is a free event but booking is essential so please book your ticket here

 

Porn as Sex Education Survey

Students aged 18+ are invited to take part in our anonymous online questionnaire about pornography. If you agree to participate you will be asked questions about what you have learned about sex from pornography, how you feel about your body and your sexual satisfaction. Notice of By-Election: Vice President / Education Officer

Nominations will open to fill the vacant paid position of SU Vice President/Education Officer at 10am TODAY – nomination forms will be available from the SU Office and Website. Nominations will close at 5pm on Wednesday 19th of September 2018 at which point completed nomination forms must be returned to the box in the SU Office. The election will take place on Thursday 27th of September 2018. For more information contact studentsunion@nuigalway.ie

Nominations also open at 10am today for the voluntary position of SU Ethnic Minorities Officer.

The FREE SU Cloakroom is back open today in the Library basement near the SU XL Shop. This free service is open 9am-6pm every Thursday and Friday during term so make sure you use it!

The NUI Galway Employability Award is a recognition of learning and skills developed through work experience and extra-curricular activities.  It is designed to support you by engaging in employability enhancement activities beyond your degree. Sustainability Showcase

NUI Galway are hosting a sustainability showcase event in the O’Donoghue Theatre on Wednesday September 26th called Our Sustainability Journey.  The event will share sustainability related research taking place on the NUI Galway campus in a relevant and accessible way and demonstrate the relevance of sustainability in everyday living.  This is a free event but booking is essential so please book your ticket here

The free STI Clinic in the Student Health Unit in Áras na Mac Léinn is by appointment only phone 091 492 604 to book. Remember you can pick up FREE condoms from the SU Office or the SU Engineering Desk all year long.

Application forms will be available from the SU Office and SU Website and must be returned before 5pm on Wednesday 19th of September to the box in the SU Office. The election will take place on Thursday 27th of September.

2pm-4pm: Accessibility Audit of the campus with ESN. We’ll be doing a walk around campus to identify things that should be changed; both physically and in terms of facilities, that could improve the campus for Students with Disabilities.
