Easter Holiday Arrangements

The SU Office will close at 5pm on Wednesday 12th of April and will reopen at 10am on Wednesday 19th of April.

The SU Cloakroom will close at 5pm on Friday 7th of April and will reopen at 9am on Friday 28th of April.

The SU Engineering Desk will close at 2pm on Friday 7th of April and will reopen at 11am on Monday 24th of April.

The Library will be open Friday 14th April 10am-6pm, closed on Saturday 15th and Sunday 16th April and open Monday 17th April 10am-6pm.

The Reading Room will be open as usual.

The Student Health Unit will close at 4.30pm on Wednesday 12th of April and will reopen at 9.15am on Wednesday 19th of April.

The Academic Writing Centre is now closed until October.

SUMS will be closed Monday April 10th-Friday 21st April

Sult will be closed from Thursday 13th April and will reopen at 8.30am on Tuesday 18th April.

The SU Shop will be closed from Friday 14th April and will reopen on Tuesday 18th April.

Smokey’s Café will be closed from Friday 14th April and will reopen on Tuesday 18th April.

The Wall Café will be open 9am-3pm Friday 14th & Saturday 15th April. Closed Sunday 16th April. Open 11am-3pm Bank Holiday Monday 17th April.

Caife na Gaeilge will be closed from Friday 7th April and will reopen on Tuesday 18th April.

  • Lectures/Teaching:  Please note that teaching (for students other than Clinical Medical Students) ends on Saturday 19th March and resumes on Monday 4th of April until Saturday 16th of April.
  • Field Trips: Field Trips where relevant take place Monday 21st March-Wednesday 23rd March and Wednesday 30th March – Friday 1st April.
  •  James Hardiman Library: The Library will be closed Friday 25th March – Monday 28th March inclusive.
  • The Reading Room: The Reading Room will be open as usual over the Easter.

David O’Doherty gig IMPORTANT UPDATE

So unfortunately David has to go over to America and teach a Zumba class in the White House BUT the show must go on so we have the wonderful Al Porter, who just sold out 3 nights in Vicar Street, in as a very able, funny, David O’Doherty replacement. Anyone who already bought a ticket for the gig can use it for the Al Porter show which will be on same time/date/venue OR you can get a full refund from the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm (up until 1pm on Monday 13th April)

Tickets for Al Porter are just €5 and are on sale now from the SU. Al’s show will be on 8pm Monday 13th April in the O’Flaherty Theatre.

David will be back to us in September to play an apology show. 

We need 3 more SU Officers! Nominations close Weds 8th April.

We are still looking for a Mature Students Officer, a Convenor of Medicine, Nursing & Health Sciences and a Clubs’ Captain to join the Students’ Union team for 2015/16.
Nominations for these 3 positions are now open and close at 5pm on Wednesday 8th April. The election will take place on Thursday 16th April.

Attention PhD students nearing completion of theses – University Write-up Bursaries

A limited number of write-up bursaries are being offered to address the problems being encountered by PhD students who are near to completing their theses yet who find themselves, for whatever reason, without funding.  These write-up bursaries will be tenable for up to a three-month period and will be worth €1,000 per month.  Completed applications (application form and form B) must be received by the College office on or before 17:00 Friday, 1st May 2015.

The Awards night itself, is not just a night for finalists and winners, it is a night to celebrate the great Digital Story’s in Galway at the moment. There will be a special panel discussion with Catriona O’Kennedy, Head of Marketing and Communications at IDA Ireland, Pauric Lenihan, Head of Digital at Aviva and Joan Mulvihill, CEO of the Irish Internet Association. 
To complete the evening there will be an after party in Brasserie on the Corner – with finger food and a DJ!

Good News for September! 
1. The NUI Galway student ID card replacement fee will be reduced from €30 to €20 coming into effect in the next academic year 2014/15.
2. All repeat examination results will now be available on Friday the 5th of September 2014 before college commences on Monday the 8th of September. This means that all repeat students will be able to register for Blackboard etc., from the first day of term.
Well done to our SU Education Officer Catherine Breslin who has been working hard on these issues, on your behalf, with the Exams office this year.

NUI Galway Students’ Union 50th Anniversary Reunion: Saturday 7th June 2014

All past and present NUI Galway Students’ Union officers, staff, journalists, colleagues and friends are invited to join with us to celebrate as the Union turns 50.

Locker Clear Out Deadline Friday 16th May

We know you have become attached to them and they feel like a home away from home BUT all lockers need to be emptied by 5pm on Friday 16th of May. Items not removed will be disposed of. You can drop your key (just the key leave the lock on the locker please!) up to the Students’ Union office in Áras na Mac Léinn Monday – Friday 10am-5pm.  

Examination Advice for Students – Mobile Phones Not Permitted in the Exam Hall

Be aware of Examination Regulations and review them before your exams.

Mobile phones will be confiscated for the duration of the exam and a fine of €20 will apply in each case. A breach of exam regulations will apply. The possible penalties are as follows:

(a) Letter of reprimand
(b) 5% reduction of marks for the relevant module
(c) 10% reduction of marks for the relevant module
(d) Zero mark for the relevant module
(e) Zero mark for the relevant module with a cap on the mark for the repeat (if a repeat sitting is allowed by the Marks and Standards for the programme) of a pass mark for the relevant programme.

Autumn Exams

Autumn exams are scheduled for Tuesday, 5th August to Friday, 15th August 2014 (inclusive). 

Darkness Into Light Saturday 10th May

Registrations are now open for the Galway and Tuam Darkness Into Light walks which take place at 4.15am on Saturday, May 10. All funds raised go to suicide prevention charity Pieta House, which opened its first West of Ireland facility in Tuam last December. There is a special student registration rate of €15 Register here.

Exam De-stress Programme

You can book a de-stressing treatment, including massage, acupuncture, osteopathy, reflexology, hypnotherapy, shiatsu, and craniosacral therapy – 30 minute treatment is €10. Are you registered to vote in the European & Local elections on 23rd May 2014? If you are entitled to vote but don’t appear on the register the closing date for inclusion on the Supplemental Register of Electors is the 6th of May. The Postal and Special Supplement closing date is the 26th April. Application forms are available here.
