Our Charity Christmas Day fundraiser takes place TODAY from 12pm in the College Bar in association with BizSoc in aid of Console and BeLonGTo. There will be a full Christmas dinner served from 12pm, Christmas carols at 1pm and DJ Byrno from 3pm onwards to jingle all the way!
SU Enterprise Awards 2015 – Now Open! Deadline Fri 28th November
The SU Enterprise Awards are now accepting applications and there is a €23,000 prize fund up for grabs! If you have a great idea for a business or a social enterprise make sure you get your entry in early. Closing date for entries is 5pm Friday 28th November.
NUI Galway Christmas Exams 2014
The Christmas Exams will take place from Monday 8th December to Monday 19th December. Exam Timetables are now available online Please check your timetable very carefully to make sure that all of your subjects are there and that there are no clashes.
We have partnered with City Direct Bus Company to provide buses to the two exam venues in Salthill at Leisureland and the Galway Bay Hotel. This service will run three times a day during the exams and costs €2 per journey.

Exam De-Stress Programme 24th Nov – 12th Dec
Wouldn’t a massage feel great? Or maybe some relaxing reflexology or an amazing acupuncture treatment? The Exam De-stress Programme offers you subsidised de-stressing treatments in the Wellness Centre, back of the Hub, Áras na Mac Léinn. It all starts Monday 24th November and runs for 3 weeks. Hardiman Research Scholarships – Applications Close TOMORROW
We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2015 Hardiman Research Scholarships and Dr Tony Ryan Research Scholarships for PhD students. There is also a ‘Cancer Care West’ Hardiman Research scholarship available in the area of surgical oncology or radiation oncology. Applications Close 5pm Friday 21st November.

The Women’s Rugby team are holding a fundraising quiz night on Thursday 27th November. Kick-off is at 8pm in Crowes Bar, Prospect Hill, Bohermore. Many spot prizes to be won. Finger food on the night provided by Crowes Bar.
Galway Science and Technology Festival Sunday 23rd November
This Sunday the university is hosting the largest Science Festival in Europe. Following two weeks promoting science in schools throughout the county, the festival is culminating in a final day event in the university. We’re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help participate in the prestigious event. For further information there will be a volunteer welcome meeting on today from 4.00 – 5.00 & 5.00 – 6.00 in The Stage (Beside the Bailey Allen Hall) or you can email alive@nuigalway.ie
Recycling Drive Monday 24th November
There will be a Recycling Drive in Aid of MYaware 12pm-4pm on Monday 24th November at Smokey’s Café as part of a Skills for Work Life project. Please bring any unwanted: clothes, textiles, bags, soft toys, mobiles phones. All items donated are either reused or (if damaged or stained) recycled into products like carpet underlay or home insulation. Nothing goes to landfill.
Galway Rape Crisis Centre 30th Anniversary Walk Saturday 6th December 2014
Join Galway Rape Crisis to mark 30 Years of Healing and hope for survivors of sexual abuse and violence. Begins at 3pm from the Spanish Arch and ends at Blackrock. For information and registration visit www.galwayrcc.org

NUI Galway Students’ Union Christmas Day Thursday 20th November – Santa needs helpers!
We are holding a massive Christmas Day fundraiser in the College Bar with BizSoc on Thursday 20th of November to raise money for Console and BeLonG To. There will be a traditional Christmas dinner, carols, cheesy Christmas tunes with DJ Byrno and lots of prizes for the best/worst Christmas jumpers along with a whole lot of other Festive merriment! There will also be an after party super club that night in Electric and 44 Club.
Santa needs some helper volunteers to assist with the fundraising on the day so if you have an hour or two to spare between 11am and 6pm on Thursday 20th November email studentsunion@nuigalway.ie to sign up and you will definitely be on Santa’s nice list this year.

“Investigating the Tuam Mothers and Babies Home: A Question of Human Rights”
On Monday 10 November, the Irish Centre for Human Rights will convene a public seminar, “Investigating the Tuam Mothers and Babies Home: A Question of Human Rights”. Speakers will include Catherine Corless (keynote speaker), Kevin Higgins, Professor Michael O’Flaherty of the Irish Centre for Human Rights and Tanya Ward, Children’s Rights Alliance. The event will be chaired by Mark Kelly, Irish Council for Civil Liberties. The seminar will run from 5 to 7pm at NUI Galway MRI Annex- MRA201. All are welcome.

Geraldine Lavelle, a 27-year-old NUI Galway graduate, is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a cycling accident last October. Console is a national organisation supporting people in suicidal crisis and those bereaved by suicide through professional counselling, support and helpline services. Run for Ger
Geraldine Lavelle, a 27-year-old NUI Galway graduate, is recovering from serious injuries sustained in a cycling accident last October. On Sunday 16th of November at 11am there will be a fundraising walk/run at NUI Galway to help raise funds for her rehabilitation. You can sign up online to take part now for just €10 here.

Startup Weekend is coming to Galway!
From the 14th to the 16th of November, teams of entrepreneurs and innovators will gather together to develop their ideas from an initial 60 second pitch to a scalable company. 54 hours of activity will culminate in a round of presentations to the assembled judges, mentors, and other teams, leaving attendees with valuable feedback on their ideas, new skills, great contacts, and hopefully, a viable startup business. Special student ticket rate €19 for weekend.

We are pleased to announce the launch of the 2015 Hardiman Research Scholarships and Dr Tony Ryan Research Scholarships for PhD students. There is also a ‘Cancer Care West’ Hardiman Research scholarship available in the area of surgical oncology or radiation oncology. Applications Close 5pm Friday 21st November.

Lords of Strut Gig: POSTPONED
Unfortunately we have had to postpone our Lords of Strut gig on Monday 20th of October. We hope to reschedule the gig for semester two. Ticket holders can get a refund from the SU Office Monday-Friday 10am-5pm. Our next comedy gig will be Panti Bliss: High Heels in Low Places on Monday 17th November. The referendum on Civil Marriage will be upon us in the Spring and it will be very important that everyone votes. But you can’t vote if you’re not registered! You can quickly and easily check that you are registered to vote here.

Criú na Gaeilge: Now Recruiting
Are you interested in the promotion of Irish language and culture on campus? We are now recruiting Criú na Gaeilge who will be responsible for helping to organise and promote events throughout the year, particularly Seachtain na Gaeilge in March. You’ll also be able to get your ALIVE cert from volunteering with this. Take the National Student Drug Survey 2014
Students for Sensible Drug Policy Ireland have launched the largest student drug survey in Ireland in collaboration with Irish Needle Exchange Forum. We invite all undergraduate students to take 10 minutes to complete the survey and share it with their peers. The survey, which is completely anonymous, will provide insight into drug trends and drug education among students across Ireland.

Free Help with Essay Writing for Students of All Disciplines at the AWC
The AWC offers free one-on-one tutorials on academic writing to all NUIG students. International students, mature students, undergrads, postgrads, students of Arts, Science, Business, or Engineering are all equally welcome.
The AWC is in the Library on floor 2. Our hours are 11-1 and 6-9 every weekday (though not Friday nights). Please drop in.

8k Run in aid of Jigsaw Galway this Saturday 11th October – Still time to Sign Up!
Registration is still open for the NUI Galway 8k run at 10am on Saturday 11th October in aid of Jigsaw Galway. You don’t have to run – walkers are also welcome to take part! There are lunchtime running groups from the Sports Centre for anyone interested in doing a bit of training before the run.
